Pub owner appeals council order to repair building hit by fire
A trial date has been set to resolve a legal battle concerning the burned-out shell of a disused pub.The fire at the Haven Bridge pub in Great Yarmouth's Southtown in March 2022 left the building at risk of collapse. In June, Great Yarmouth Borough Council (GYBC) served a "notice requiring works" against the Nottingham-based owner, Andrew Slater but he has appealed that notice at Great Yarmouth Magistrates' Court, claiming his tenant is responsible for repairs.Magistrates were told of separate civil proceedings between contractor KB Scaffolding of Great Yarmouth and GYBC.
Mr Slater and GYBC are due before Great Yarmouth Magistrates on 18 September.
KB Scaffolding Services said it was asked to erect scaffolding around the building to secure it, but the council, the owner of the building and the tenant all deny giving the instruction.Mr Slater, his tenant Martin Bennington and the council all deny responsibility to settle the scaffolding cost, reportedly in excess of £400,000.The council has previously said it has no contract with KB Scaffolding.Mr Slater has said Mr Bennington was responsible for all repairs to the building under the terms of the lease.David Lowens, on behalf of GYBC, said: "It may help [the court] if I say that under Section 79 of the Building Act 1974, it is only possible to serve [notice to] the owner of the premises."That is the council's reading of that section. The situation regarding KB Scaffolding, will be a separate dispute, and will be irrelevant to the appeal."
Mr Slater told the BBC outside court the scaffolding was erected to allow a fire investigation to be conducted safely, but that if he had been notified he would have approved the immediate demolition of the building. In court he said: "The scaffolding is all interlinked, so until the scaffolding is sorted out, nothing can be done with the building."We've still got to sort the scaffolding out."Both parties accepted that works to demolish the building were being held up by the dispute. The BBC has attempted to contact KB Scaffolding Services without response.

Anglesey Boat Tour Operator Expands Fleet to Meet Rising Tourist Demand
A surge in tourism interest around Anglesey's coastline has prompted a Holyhead-based fishing trip company to expand its operations, doubling its fleet and diversifying services to cater to a wider audience. Owned and operated by local fisherman, Dave Jones, Anglesey Fishing and Boat Trips has seen a boom in business, supported by guidance from Business Wales. Founded in July 2023, Anglesey Fishing and Boat Trips originally specialised in bespoke fishing excursions around the Anglesey coast. The business started with a single vessel, The Upholder, but customer demand has quickly seen its offerings evolve to include a broader range of services, including sightseeing tours and private charters to the Isle of Man. Within a year of launching, the company has expanded its fleet to include a second vessel, The Lophelia, the only enclosed rigid inflatable boat (RIB) in Wales. Dave Jones, a lifelong fisherman, was encouraged by his wife, Amanda, who leveraged her skills as a procurement professional to promote the business online. Sensing opportunities for growth beyond traditional fishing tours, the couple sought advice from Business Wales. The organisation's tourism industry experts provided invaluable guidance, helping Dave diversify his services and gain confidence in expanding his business. Dave said: 'I love being a fisherman and I think more people should have the chance to explore the beauty of the coastline that's always supported me and my family. Customers agreed and we quickly felt there was room to grow and bring in new types of tours. Business Wales really helped us explore our options, and we were able to invest confidently in expanding the fleet and the types of trips we offer.' The newest addition to the fleet, The Lophelia, is a significant step forward for Anglesey Fishing and Boat Trips. The boat, which seats 12 and offers an enclosed, weather-protected space for passengers, allows the company to offer private charters to the Isle of Man. These trips have already generated substantial interest, with advance bookings for popular events such as the TT Races, Southern 100, and the Manx Grand Prix. Amanda Jones, who plays a pivotal role in the business's operations, said: 'Dave has been a fisherman his whole life, and the natural progression was to expand our services when we saw so much interest in day trips. Business Wales helped us navigate the right path and gave us the tools to grow.' Business Wales Adviser Svetlana Ross connected Dave with industry specialists, including Digital Adviser Euros Smith and Tom Burke, the Digital Innovation Manager at M-SParc, Wales' first Science Park, to help the company improve its online presence. The company's latest offerings, including sightseeing tours to destinations like South Stack, Skerries, and Llanddwyn Island, have attracted a diverse clientele. With The Upholder continuing to host a variety of fishing experiences, including introductory and wreck fishing, the company caters to both seasoned anglers and tourists. The expansion has been further fuelled by social media success. By participating in Business Wales courses, Anglesey Fishing and Boat Trips is now followed by thousands of people and customers eager to explore the beautiful waters surrounding Anglesey. Amanda said: 'We knew that people wanted to see pictures, videos, and reviews before booking. Business Wales connected us with Euros, who's helping us build an engaging online platform. Sharing content regularly had an immediate effect, as soon as people see what we have here, they want to explore it themselves.' Looking ahead, Dave is optimistic about the company's future. With plans to continue expanding and enhancing its digital presence, Anglesey Fishing and Boat Trips is poised to make waves in the Welsh tourism industry. Svetlana Ross of Business Wales said: 'Dave has a clear vision for the future, and I'm confident that, with the support he's receiving, the business will continue to thrive over the coming months.'

Real Madrid agree deal for River Plate teenager Mastantuono
BUENOS AIRES, June 5 (Reuters) - Real Madrid have agreed to sign River Plate's young forward Franco Mastantuono for an initial fee of about $45 million, a spokesman for the Argentine club told Reuters on Thursday. The 17-year-old Mastantuono made his debut for River in January 2024 and is widely regarded by the local media as the latest prodigy to emerge from Argentine football. A talented left-footed finisher, he established himself as a starter under coach Marcelo Gallardo and soon became a key part of the Buenos Aires-based team. "The sale is settled, in the final talks it remains to agree on some details," a club source told Reuters, who gave no further information about the transfer. Mastantuono had been linked to other big European clubs such as Manchester United and Paris St Germain after attracting attention with a stunning free kick in River Plate's Superclasico win over Boca Juniors in April. River intend to keep the attacking midfielder on loan at the club until December to complete their Copa Libertadores campaign, according to local press reports. Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni recently called up Mastantuono for the first time for matches against Chile and Colombia in the South American qualifiers. He could become the youngest player to make his senior debut for Argentina.

Founder retires as Moray engineering firm with 125 staff acquired
One of Moray's most prominent business figures has retired following the sale of his company in a major acquisition deal. Alan James, 71, has stepped down from AJ Engineering (AJE), the Forres-based firm he founded in 1999. The business, which employs 125 people across sites in Forres, Fort William and Carlisle, has been acquired by global environmental and engineering leader RSK Group. The deal includes AJE's sister company NEWCo, based in Fort William. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, brings AJE into a group of over 200 companies worldwide. Graham Alexander, who has worked with AJE for 11 years, will take over as group managing director. Neil Worsdall will remain general manager of NEWCo. Mr James said the deal secures the future of the companies and positions them well for further growth. He will remain for a short handover before fully retiring. He expressed confidence in the next phase of the business. 'By joining a larger organisation, AJE and NEWCo will benefit from increased new business opportunities, a broad range of knowledge sharing, and working in partnership and collaboration with the other RSK Group businesses on a wide range of varied and inclusive projects,' he said. 'This truly marks the start of exciting times for all at AJ's and NEWCo.' Mr James began his career in 1971 as an apprentice fabricator welder at William Reid Engineering in Forres. He progressed into project management and later earned an MSc from Aberdeen University. It was when he was made redundant at 45 following the closure of William Reid in 1999, that he took the leap to set up his own firm. He launched AJ Engineering with just one employee in a rented workshop at Greshop Industrial Estate in Forres. 'Starting out I remember working eight straight weeks – all hours, Saturdays and Sundays too,' he recalls. 'It's been a lot of hard work building up the company, but very satisfying.' Over the past 26 years, AJE has taken on major projects across the UK and beyond. Highlights include infrastructure support at SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland and ongoing work at Rothera Research Station in Antarctica. Mr James says he has always placed a strong emphasis on training and development: 'I started as an apprentice myself,' he said. 'Investing in young people has always been important to me. 'The intention is that for our staff here in Forres, Fort William and Carlisle, it's very much business as usual. 'I am well over retirement age, and making sure that the company that I have built, with lots of support along the way, continues to grow from strength to strength has been very important to me.' Outside his role at AJE, Mr James has been active in the Moray community. He is Depute Lieutenant of Moray and a director of Forres Events Limited. He helped organise the Piping at Forres festival and last year's Grant Park 100 celebration. RSK Group said acquiring AJE and NEWCo will strengthen its UK engineering base, particularly in water, energy and infrastructure.
