Bangladesh to face the UAE in 2-match T20 series in Sharjah
SHARJAH: The Bangladesh men's cricket team will visit the UAE this month for a two-match T20 International series against the Emirati national side. The games will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on May 17 and 19.
It will be the second T20 series between the two sides in three years, following a two-match encounter in Dubai in September 2022, from which Bangladesh emerged with a 2-0 victory.
Subhan Ahmad, chief operating officer of the Emirates Cricket Board, welcomed the upcoming series and the chance for the UAE to test themselves against an established full member of the ICC from Asia.
'We are excited to host the Bangladesh men's team for another bilateral T20I series with the UAE men's team,' he said. 'The Emirates Cricket Board is always keen on providing opportunities to the UAE's national side against quality opponents.
'In the last three years we have hosted ICC full members New Zealand, the West Indies and Afghanistan, while Bangladesh's T20 series tour is their second bilateral tour of the UAE in three years.
'The two-match Bangladesh series will provide an ideal preparation opportunity for the UAE ahead of this year's ACC Men's T20 Asia Cup and we thank the Bangladesh Cricket Board for their support for UAE Cricket. The Sharjah Cricket Stadium is an excellent venue for T20 cricket and we look forward to hosting two exciting games.'
Nizam Uddin Chowdhury, CEO of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, echoed these sentiments and said the series will be an important part of his side's broader preparations for upcoming competitions.
'We are pleased to see the Bangladesh national team's return to the UAE,' he said. 'The BCB values the opportunity to engage in competitive cricket and we appreciate the initiative of the Emirates Cricket Board in arranging this T20 series.
'These matches will serve as an important part of our team's preparations ahead of a packed international calendar, including the upcoming Asia Cup. We are confident that these two games will further strengthen the cricketing ties between the BCB and ECB and provide quality entertainment to the cricket fans.'

Asia Cup in limbo after India-Pakistan conflict
NEW DELHI, India: This year's Asia Cup hangs in the balance following the recent clashes between tournament hosts India and arch-rivals Pakistan. Already-soured relations between the nuclear-armed neighbors further worsened after four days of intense fighting before a ceasefire was announced last month. India are scheduled to host the Asia Cup, a flagship event of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), in September but uncertainty lingers over the T20 tournament. 'To be honest, we have had no discussions within the board about the Asia Cup,' a top official of the Indian cricket board (BCCI) told Reuters on Tuesday, refusing to confirm whether the tournament will go ahead as scheduled. 'We have been busy with the Indian Premier League and then we have India's tour of England. These are our immediate concerns,' he added. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was not forthcoming about its team's participation in the tournament in India either. 'We will cross that bridge when we come to it,' the PCB told Reuters in a statement. ACC president Mohsin Naqvi, who also heads the PCB, was not available to comment. The ACC on Monday announced the postponement of the women's Emerging Asia Cup, which was due to begin on Friday, citing weather conditions and the spread of the viral disease chikungunya in host nation Sri Lanka. India will host the women's 50-overs World this year but Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka under an arrangement made by the International Cricket Council. India refused to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy this year and played all their matches, including the March 9 final, in Dubai. Bilateral cricket has been suspended since 2013 between the Asian neighbors, who play each other only in multi-team events. India head coach Gautam Gambhir is against playing Pakistan even in neutral venues but will follow whatever the BCCI decided, he said last month.

Pakistan to play in Sri Lanka at India-hosted Women's World Cup
NEW DELHI, India: Pakistan will play their matches at this year's Women's Cricket World Cup in Sri Lanka under an International Cricket Council deal that allows them to avoid playing in host nation India. The refusal of India to travel to Pakistan for the men's Champions Trophy earlier this year resulted in the ICC introducing neutral venues to tournaments hosted by either of the neighboring countries. Nuclear-armed India and Pakistan were last month involved in a four-day military conflict, their worst since 1999, before a ceasefire was agreed. Sri Lanka's Colombo will join Indian host cities Bengaluru, Guwahati, Indore and Visakhapatnam in staging matches from September 30 until the final of the 50-over tournament on November 2, the ICC announced late on Monday. Colombo will be Pakistan's home for seven group games. The first semifinal will take place in either Guwahati or Colombo, if Pakistan progress that far, on October 29 with the second semifinal a day later in Bengaluru. The final will be in either Bengaluru or Colombo on Sunday, November 2. 'The venues for the knockouts are dependent on Pakistan qualifying,' the ICC said in a statement. 'Two alternative venues have been identified for one semifinal and the final.' Eight teams will contest the World Cup — Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Australia beat England by 71 runs in the final of the last Women's World Cup, hosted by New Zealand in 2022.
