Dunne takes F2 championship lead with Imola win

BBC News18-05-2025

Ireland's Alex Dunne has taken the lead of the Formula 2 standings with his second win of the season at Imola. It was a commanding drive by the McLaren Development Driver, who started from sixth on the grid. The 19-year-old, aided by a fast pit stop by his Rodin Motorsport team, made some clinical overtakes to move into a race lead he would not relinquish with eight laps remaining. Dunne, who becomes the first multiple race winner of the season after his victory in Bahrain in April, leads GB's Luke Browning in the standings by six points. After starting in sixth place, Dunne jumped up to third after his pit stop on the seventh lap after a rapid service by the Rodin mechanics. He swiftly took advantage of pole sitter Dino Beganovic running wide and pulled off a strong move on Browning to move into the net race lead at the midpoint of the race by being the first car who had not yet pitted.A safety car for the stricken Rafael Villagomez bunched the field back up together, and Dunne made some impressive, decisive overtakes on the cars ahead to move into the lead.He took the chequered flag by 6.5 seconds ahead of Browning while Beganovic rounded out the podium. The next round of the Formula 2 season, which is the tier below Formula 1, takes place on the streets on Monaco next weekend.

Alexander Zverev left doubled over on French Open court as he reveals disgusting thing he did during Djokovic loss

BUZZING Novak Djokovic became the oldest man to make the French Open semi-finals since 1968 – as mosquito-munching Alexander Zverev choked once again. The 38-year-old Serbian is showing no signs of slowing down and he won his 22nd consecutive match in three years on Parisian clay. 4 4 A 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over the lanky German, 28, close to midnight on Wednesday secured him a last-four date with Jannik Sinner, the world No.1, on Friday. No.3 seed Zverev took the lead after 49 minutes, the first set that Djokovic had dropped this tournament. Yet after he revealed to the umpire that 'I've swallowed about 50 flies already', his fortunes swiftly changed and Djokovic swarmed all over him. There was one astonishing 41-shot rally that by rights Djokovic should not have won but somehow he did in game six of the fourth set. Zverev – who lost the 2024 singles final to Carlos Alcaraz despite being 2-1 up – has a habit of bottling the big occasions. And he lost for the ninth time in his 14 meetings with the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic – who claimed the second set with a drop shot – might have ditched Andy Murray pre-Paris as his coach but he has not forgotten how to win tennis matches, especially ones that last more than three hours, although he did seal it on his fifth match point. It was 57 years ago that a 40-year-old Richard Pancho Gonzales from America made it this far but he ended up losing to Rod Laver. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 4 Earlier in the day, Sinner bashed up Bublik Enemy No.1 6-1 7-5 6-0 in 11 minutes shy of two hours. Ever-reliable Jannik Sinner won a 19th consecutive Grand Slam match as he eliminated British No.1 Jack Draper's drop-shotting conqueror Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals. Novak Djokovic digs out French Open rival for 'spying' on him and seeing Champions League trophy Bublik, 27, produced 37 unforced errors and only nailed six drop-shot winners, which is half of what he achieved against the Brit. Sinner, the No.1 seed, won the 2024 US Open and then backed that up by lifting the Australian Open in January – it could be three majors in a row come Sunday night. He said: 'We have played a couple of times before so we knew what to expect. 'But in the other way with him, you never know what is happening. He has beaten some tough players to get there. 'I tried to stay focused on my side of the court. Play as solidly as possible. He can have some ups and downs. 'I tried to stay consistent the whole match and serve well in the important matches. 'It was a good performance from my side. It was a bit windy and breezy, so things can be complicated. 'I warmed up in the hotel because it was rainy, then the sun came out. A lot of different challenges.'

Irish rugby player to join the Love Island villa this summer

An Irish rugby player will be joining the Love Island villa this summer. Connor Philips from Limerick will be the latest Irish person looking for love. The 25-year-old plays as a winger for Munster and played for the Ireland 7s team as well. Advertisement The type of Islander I'd like to couple up with is… Someone who is really sure of themselves, ambitious, a bit of a go-getter and good craic. I like dark eyes and I don't mind a dominant woman. You're a 10 but… I don't like to answer to anyone else. I like to do my own thing. It's something I'm working on for a relationship. Hopefully I've improved! What's your biggest ick? Being too needy, or needing to do everything together. I like someone to be independent and do their own thing and then we come together and do our thing. It's morning in the Villa, where would we find you? Sunglasses on, iced coffee in my hand, I'm ready to go. Advertisement What's your claim to fame? I play professional rugby. I'm a winger. If your love life up until now was a movie, what would it be called? 'Still Trying' - it's got to be a rugby pun, hasn't it? If you were the CEO of anything, what would it be? Mischief. I'm the class clown type vibe. Being in big teams and groups all the time, I'm always mixing things up, stirring the pot. Would Maya hire or fire you based on your flirting skills alone? Definitely hire. I ask girls if they want to go halves on a baby. It doesn't work, but it gets them laughing. It's an ice-breaker, not a serious question of course! Advertisement If your love life was a business would it be booming or would you be bankrupt? I'd be keeping my head above water… I'm doing nicely as a single person, but I need a relationship, I need to settle down and invest in some stocks. What kind of airport person are you; arrive 3+ hours early/ last one to gate? Even if I am a bit early, I'll still be the last one on the plane. I travel a lot so I've picked up a few tactics, like getting on last and finding a nice empty seat near the front. Do you have any unusual skills/secret hobbies? Singing. My go to is Mario's 'Let Me Love You'. I've sang in front of a lot of people before. If it's your first rugby match you have to get on the bus and sing -they loved it! Love Island returns Monday 9th June at 9pm on Virgin Media Two and Virgin Media Play
