A total of 13 million trees are now expected to be planted on Tłı̨chǫ lands in the N.W.T. in the coming years following a joint investment of $53 million from the federal and Tłı̨chǫ governments.
The Tłı̨chǫ government signed an agreement with Tree Canada and Let's Plant Trees in 2023 to plant one million trees over the course of three years around Behchokǫ̀, with half the money flowing from the federal government and the other half being raised through sponsorships.
Work has already been underway since last year to harvest seeds from local tree species and to grow them in nurseries in the South.
On Friday, the Tłı̨chǫ and federal governments announced a new deal to plant another 12 million on Tłı̨chǫ lands over the next seven years from locally-harvested seeds. This time, Canada's 2 Billion Trees program is putting nearly $45 million into the project while the Tłı̨chǫ government is pitching in more than $8 million.
The money will also be used to build greenhouses for a tree nursery, incorporate cultural values into the project, and to provide training for long-term restoration activities, reads a news release from Natural Resources Canada.
The goal of the project is to restore ecosystems, create jobs and bring back boreal caribou habitat. The release said it's also expected to have other long-term benefits like reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing resilience to climate exchange and providing protection from future wildfires.
"The Tłı̨chǫ government is pleased to take a leadership role to foster the healing of the land after devastating wildfires," said Tłı̨chǫ Grand Chief Jackson Lafferty in the release. "Together, we will work to counter climate change through the reforestation of vital wildlife habitat and support training and employment opportunities for those in our communities."
Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada's minister of energy and natural resources, said in a statement that the funding will play an important role bringing benefits to the Tłı̨chǫ territory, and help the federal government's goal of planting two billion trees over the next decade.
"Through this project, we are showing how collaborative work with First Nations can ensure that the right tree is planted at the right place at the right time for the benefit of all Canadians," he said.

Saskatchewan looks to expedite wage payments in hopes of recruiting more firefighters

As crews continue to battle wildfires in northern Saskatchewan amid a provincial state of emergency, the government is making efforts to speed up compensation for those who offer to pitch in. Article content Specifically, the province is looking to address this issue for Type 3 firefighters in hopes that it will increase registration from eligible candidates. Article content Article content The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) website states: 'Type 3 crews are made up of qualified firefighters hired on an emergency basis. These crews are used to support Type 1 and Type 2 crews working on sustained action wildfires and are normally used on a fire line that is under control or in the mop-up stage, or low in complexity and expected fire behaviour.' Article content Article content Type 1 firefighters 'typically perform initial and sustained attacks on wildland fires,' according to the SPSA. Type 2 firefighters are First Nations and northern community crews who 'provide firefighting and response services, as needed, and work on projects within their home communities in times of low fire danger.' Article content Article content The effort to reduce payment delays for Type 3 firefighters was requested by Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte of the Prince Albert Grand Council. Article content 'It's not like before. When you got out of the fire, you got a paycheque right there,' Hardlotte said in a May 29 interview, noting he'd spoken with Premier Scott Moe about the issue. Article content The government responded to a Leader-Post inquiry about the grand chief's comments, noting via email that '(SPSA) President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard is actively engaging in conversations with Grand Chief Hardlotte as well as others on how best to address this concern.' Article content Article content 'The SPSA is also working internally to expedite the payment process with the hope that it will increase eligible Type III Firefighters to register for active firefighter duty,' the email adds. Article content Article content In addition, the government sent a copy of a May 29 letter by Deputy Premier Jim Reiter to the federal ministers of finance, Crown-Indigenous relations, and Indigenous services. Article content 'Through discussions with the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC), we have been told there are a number of residents who reside on their member First Nations who are willing to assist with firefighting,' the letter states. Article content It also requests — on behalf of the PAGC — that the federal government ensure any of these people who are currently receiving federal income assistance not have their benefits reduced because of firefighting wages.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on the release of Judih Weinstein's remains by Hamas Français

OTTAWA, ON, June 5, 2025 /CNW/ - "On October 7, 2023, Hamas, a terrorist entity, launched the deadliest attack on the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Approximately one thousand two hundred innocent people were murdered. Young revelers with their whole lives ahead of them were slaughtered. Communities were burnt to the ground. Among the countless victims of this attack were seven Canadians, including Judih Weinstein. "Today, after over a year and a half, Ms. Weinstein's remains have finally been returned to Israel. Ms. Weinstein was a mother, grandmother, teacher, and mentor, who dedicated her life to guiding others with empathy, charity, and humanity. "As the family grieves the unimaginable loss of both Ms. Weinstein and her husband, Gadi Haggai, who was murdered in that same horrific attack, the return of their remains is a time to begin to heal and to rest. We mourn with her family. May her memory be a blessing. "Since October 7, Jewish communities have faced a reprehensible resurgence of antisemitism. It has to stop. We cannot look away from the power of antisemitism and its radicalization – we must confront it, denounce it, and act to keep Jewish Canadians safe. "The government is fighting the horrifying rise in hate, protecting our communities, and working with our allies to promote long-term peace and security in the Middle East – including calling for Hamas to lay down its arms, release all remaining hostages immediately, and have no role in the future of a Palestinian state."
