B'deshi woman deported, son moves Supreme Court

1 2 New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday sought the Centre's response to a petition by a man alleging that his mother, released after three years detention following a foreigners tribunal identifying her as a Bangladeshi, may have been forcibly pushed into Bangladesh despite her plea against the tribunal's order pending in SC since 2017. Appearing for Iunuch Ali, senior advocate Kapil Sibal told a partial working day bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and S C Sharma that she was picked up by the Dhubri police in Assam and allegedly pushed back into Bangladesh. "How can the Dhubri SP determine whether she is a Bangladeshi immigrant? Was she produced before a magistrate after being detained? The son does not know her whereabouts. The Centre must inform him about her whereabouts," Sibal said. SC issued notice to the Centre on this plea. Sibal also questioned the 'push back' of illegal Bangladeshi migrants and said this is unknown to the process of law. The only legal process available is 'deportation', he said. The petitioner said, "The law does not recognise 'push back', i.e arresting foreign nationals and taking them to the international border, and either casting them away or pushing them across international borders without any verification and acceptance by the authorities of the other country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like News For Jack Nicholson, 87, He Has Been Confirmed To Be... Reportingly Undo This is illegal, not permitted by any law." The petitioner's mother Monowara Bewa was declared a foreigner by the Dhubri Foreigners Tribunal on March 17, 2016. The Gauhati HC upheld the tribunal's order on Feb 28, 2017. Her appeal against the HC order is pending adjudication in SC for the last eight years. In the meantime, SC in another case in 2019 ordered that foreigners cannot be kept in detention indefinitely and must be either deported to their native country or released on bail. The Centre had said deportation is dependent on the host country accepting their citizen. Based on the 2019 judgment, Bewa was released in Dec 2019. She was detained again on May 24 as the drive against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants picked pace after the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor by Indian armed forces against terrorist bases in Pakistan. The petitioner said her detention was in violation of her rights guaranteed under Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution.

Karnataka Dy CM Shivakumar urges Centre's support as Maharashtra objects to Alamatti dam height increase

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 2 (ANI): After the Maharashtra government raised objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday appealed to Union Ministers and MPs from Karnataka to safeguard the state's interests. While addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha, DK Shivakumar said, 'As per the Krishna Tribunal's order, Karnataka can increase the height of the Alamatti dam to 524 meters. Maharashtra, who was quiet when the order was pronounced, suddenly wrote a letter to our CM objecting to it. I appeal to all the Union Ministers and MPs with folded hands to protect the state's interest in this.' Shivakumar said that Fadnavis wrote a letter to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on May 9 stating that the Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised. He added, 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to our CM Siddaramaiah on May 9, raising objections to increasing the height of the Alamatti dam. Stating that Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the dam's height is raised, the letter has asked for the re-evaluation of the plan. This letter is a shock to us. Maharashtra had never objected to this project till now. They had not raised any issues when the Tribunal passed its judgement in 2010. Maharashtra had even submitted an affidavit to the Tribunal seeking to increase the height, but it is opposing it all of a sudden.' He said that CM Siddaramaiah will reply to the Maharashtra CM's letter. 'This project is our right, as accorded by the Krishna Tribunal. Our CM will give a reply to the letter from the Maharashtra CM. Union Minister V Somanna is part of Union Jal Shakthi ministry. Alamatti project is needed for the state, we don't want friction with our neighbouring state. The cost escalation is very due to delay in this project. We would need Rs 1 lakh crore for land acquisition for this project,' he said. Shivakumar said that Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification to increase the height of Alamatti since 2013 'Flooding in Maharashtra is their internal matter, and they need to fix it. We will meet the PM and the Union Jal Shakthi Minister and put pressure regarding this. Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification for increasing the height of Alamatti since 2013. How long should we wait? We will share the letter from the Maharashtra CM and our reply to that with all our MPs,' Shivakumar said. (ANI)

UK's MP Priti Patel meets Indian delegation, shares commitment to combat terrorism

London [UK], June 2 (ANI): Conservative Party's Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel on Monday expressed her pleasure after meeting with an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, led by Bharatiya Janata Party MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, and stated that 'significant areas of discussion were covered.' In a diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor, the Modi government has formed seven multi-party delegations to inform nations about Pakistan's links to terrorism and India's strong message of zero tolerance for terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. In a post on X, Patel wrote, 'A pleasure to meet with a cross-party delegation of senior Indian MPs @HCI_London.' 'Significant areas of discussion covered our shared determination to combatting terrorism, to UK-India defence and security links, our economic ties and the living bridge between our two countries,' she aded. Earlier, the High Commission of India in London shared the picture of the meeting and wrote, The All-Party Parliamentary Delegation met with Shadow Foreign Secretary @pritipatel and her team to share India's firm resolve in combating cross-border terrorism. They also highlighted how #OperationSindoor exemplifies the new normal set by India in this ongoing effort.' The Indian delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, includes BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari, Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Congress MPs Ghulam Ali Khatana and Amar Singh, former Union Minister MJ Akbar, and former Ambassador Pankaj Saran. Earlier, the all-party delegation interacted with the Indian diaspora at India House in London. During the interaction, the Members of Parliament reaffirmed India's united stance and unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms. While interacting with the Indian diaspora in London, Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Pakistan is not a 'democratic country' and added that Pakistan's armed forces have made the country for themselves and are 'unelectable and unaccountable.' Highlighting the example of Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, whom he said was 'defeated in the field' but promoted to Field Marshal, Prasad drew parallels with former military rulers like Ayub Khan. Prasad said, 'What is the problem of Pakistan? The problem with Pakistan is that it is not a democratic country. 'Muhammad Ali Jinnah ne banaya Pakistan, wo ban gaya Generals ki dukaan, that is the situation of Pakistan. The second thing, very important, is people, leaders make the country. There, Pakistan armed forces have made a country for themselves, unelectable, not accountable, not popular sanction, but they seized power. Ayub Khan field marshal for 10 years. Mr Yahya Khan for seven and a half years, Mr Zia ul Haq for eleven years, General Musharraf for nine years.' Further, he also mentioned how 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden was caught in Pakistan. He said that the terrorists who hijacked the plane to rescue Masood Azhar had been killed and Masood Azhar's family members were also killed by the Indian Armed Forces under Operation Sindoor. Notably, seven all-party delegations are taking part in various outreach programmes in their countries they are assigned to. The delegation aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pak-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed. Indian Armed Forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the death of over 100 terrorists affiliated with terror outfits like the Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The seven group of delegations will visit Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Algeria, the UK, France, Germany, the EU, Italy, Denmark, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, Singapore, the UAE, Liberia, Congo, Sierra Leone, the US, Panama, Guyana, Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Greece, Slovenia, Latvia, Russia, Egypt, Qatar, Ethiopia, and South Africa.
