Bus provider Kinetic apologises for incidents on Townsville school routes

A regional Queensland bus company has apologised to families for a third driver breach in as many months as concerns about student safety grow.
Kinetic is a state government-contracted bus service that operates in and around Townsville.
Last week a driver was stood down after students reported inappropriate behaviour.
"They exited and boarded another Kinetic service, making the second driver aware of the incident," a Townsville Catholic Education spokesperson said.
"The safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority and we commend the students on acting in a responsible way."
Kinetic said the driver exhibited "unprofessional behaviour".
The company has committed to undertaking a thorough investigation into the May 15 incident.
Kinetic relies received more than $16 million worth of state funding in the 2023-24 financial year to deliver its Townsville services, but parents are concerned for their children's safety.
Amanda Wright's daughter was on board a Kinetic bus in April when the driver attempted a risky turn in a 110-kilometre-per-hour zone.
Footage taken by the schoolgirl showed Flinders Highway traffic at a standstill as the driver attempted a U-turn.
"The driver made the turn on a crest, crossing double white lines, blocking the highway in both directions in our first fog of the season," Ms Wright said.
Ms Wright said the driver involved also missed a stop that day.
Kinetic confirmed that a stop was missed and said the company had a policy to never leave a child behind.
But Ms Wright said Kinetic regularly left children behind, including her own.
"All the parents out here know Kinetic's number by heart," Ms Wright said.
"So we can call and say, 'Hey you have left our children on the side of the Flinders Highway, can you please go get them before they get stolen?'"
Kinetic told the ABC that the actions seen on the video did not meet company standards.
It said it conducted a prompt investigation and reinforced training.
A mother whose children were abandoned by Kinetic at a flooded bridge said she feared the company was not improving.
The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, has two children who use the service.
She said in March a Kinetic driver told one of her children to disembark and remove a road-closed sign so the bus could cross the flooded bridge.
"As locals we know you don't go through that — it is fast-moving," the mother said.
She raised concerns with Kinetic and submitted a formal complaint, but a week later her children and other school passengers were told to get off the bus at the same flooded bridge.
"We are worried about retaliation if we report something on the bus," the woman said.
The driver involved in the incidents raised by the mother was stood down.
Kinetic said an investigation into the incident had been completed, but would not comment on whether the driver would return to work.
Kinetic general manager Martin Hall said the company took full responsibility for the incidents.
"None of the occurrences were to the standard we hold ourselves to," he said.
"The trust families place in us to transport their children safely is something we deeply value.
"We apologise unreservedly to the students and families affected."
Mr Hall said Kinetic drivers in Townsville worked through difficult circumstances over the last few months.
"Our drivers have worked tirelessly to deliver services across Townsville despite recent challenges that have impacted the entire community, including weather events and labour shortages," he said.
"Our bus drivers come to work each day committed to providing safe transportation for the communities they serve, often navigating difficult road conditions and making decisions in real time."
Translink, a division of the state transport department, refused to comment on recent Kinetic incidents.
"Delivery partner staff are employed by the operators," a Translink spokesperson said.
"We work with operators to ensure an investigation in relation to significant service delivery complaints has been undertaken.
"We do not comment on delivery partner decisions on their staff."

An urgent search is underway to find a missing 21-year-old man who was last seen leaving his home on foot six days ago. Finn Coyle left his home on Tanner Rd in Carmel, in the Perth hills, about 2.30pm on Friday and failed to return home. A search operation involving about 50 police and SES volunteers using a drone, dogs and horses have been scouring dense bushland near Mr Coyle's home to locate him. His brother Connor Coyle told media Finn had been struggling with mental health and they were worried about him because it was completely out of character. 'It's entirely unlike him,' he said. 'We're all very worried for his wellbeing and his welfare, he's known to spend a lot of time in the local bush in the hill's area. 'I think he's very resourceful and he's a great young man, but he's suffering a lot of mental health. 'We're losing a generation of young people to mental health.' Detective Sergeant Brad Robinson said a team had been searching a massive area of thick bushland near Mr Coyle's home since Tuesday. 'We believe he's probably not too far from home, he likes being in the bush, that's the type of person he is so we're concentrating our search efforts at this stage in and around here,' he said. 'He's pretty resourceful this young fella, he likes being in the bush, and he likes to keep to himself. 'We don't know whether he's fallen and injured himself, it could be any scenario so we just want all those people that live around here to have a really good look around their backyards and properties.' Mr Coyle is described as being 187cm tall, with a slim build, short brown hair and green eyes. Police urged anyone who lives in the area to check their CCTV and dashcam footage and to contact police immediately with any information about his whereabouts.

A man who climbed up the ropes of a cruise ship on Sydney Harbour in a self-proclaimed 'really stupid' stunt has been fined $4000. George Frederick Carr, 29, climbed up the ropes of the Carnival Adventure cruise ship at the overseas passenger terminal at The Rocks in Sydney on May 17. Video of Carr's bizarre climb was widely shared on social media last month, capturing him hanging upside down as he made his way up the ropes. However his adventure was short-lived, with police called to the scene about 3pm. Footage showed a police boat below as the man stood on the ropes before he was lowered down and escorted away by officers. Carr pleaded guilty in Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday morning to charges of enter cleared zone when not screened and cleared, and enter landside and waterside restricted zones when not authorised. Magistrate Elizabeth Bushby had to take a moment to look up the unusual offences before sentencing. 'I'm gonna have to look this up because this is not an event that commonly comes before court,' she said. Representing himself, Carr then told the court that he'd climbed the rope to do a 'stunt', believing the cruise ship was bound for Europe when it was due to depart on a nine-day round trip to the Great Barrier Reef. 'I just thought I'd climb the rope and get in through the latch,' Carr told the court. 'But I didn't get inside the boat and they lowered the rope and they caught me.' He told Ms Bushby that he had been 'really stupid'. However, Ms Bushby told him the offences were 'more than a stunt', with the clear zones of the harbour in place to protect the community and species in the area. She also pointed to the large number of resources that were taken up trying to 'prevent (Mr Carr) from following through with (his) plan'. Ms Bushby accepted that it was a 'spontaneous' offence, but it's nature was 'unexplained'. Emphasising the importance of deterring others from committing similar offences, Ms Bushby handed down two $1250 fines for each of the two charges related to entering a cleared zone and entering a landside restricted zone. A further $1500 fine was also handed down for the charge relating to entering the waterside restricted zone. Ms Bushby told the court that the third offence was 'objectively more serious' than the others. 'That matter is an objectively more serious example of the offences in your conduct when you were in that zone and the resources that were taken up,' she told the court.

Victorian childcare regulator 'monitoring' provider at centre of NSW allegations

Victoria's minister for children says the state's childcare regulator is "actively monitoring" provider Affinity Education after allegations against it, including a child being hit by a staff member, were aired in NSW parliament. Appearing at a Victorian parliamentary hearing on Tuesday night, Lizzie Blandthorn told a parliamentary enquiry that she and other state ministers wanted to talk to the new federal minister responsible for early childhood education, Jess Walsh, about whether the current national regulatory system needs overhauling. Ms Blandthorn told the hearing it would be "inappropriate" to comment on current investigations. "Victoria's regulatory authority and other regulatory authorities are actively monitoring … Affinity education services and investigating incidents in services and will take action where required," she said. Affinity is one of Australia's biggest for-profit childcare chains with 250 centres across the country and 52 in Victoria. It operates under the brands including Papilio, Milestones and Kids Academy. Last month, a 7.30 investigation gained access to regulatory documents tabled in NSW parliament that revealed allegations by the state's childcare regulator that Affinity educators obstructed an investigation into a staff member who repeatedly slapped a baby. Other allegations against Affinity contained in the documents included serving expired food, hygiene breaches, a staff member using a child to mop up vomit and incidents of children being dragged around by their arms. More than 1,700 regulatory breaches were recorded against Affinity between 2021 and 2024, an average of more than one a day. The allegations tabled in NSW state parliament relate only to that state. In a statement to the ABC, Affinity chief executive Tim Hickey apologised to parents and said the company had a "zero-tolerance approach to any form of child harm and will dismiss employees found to be in breach of this safeguard, as well as engage with external agencies up to and including police where required". "We will strengthen the trust families have in us by continuing to act with integrity and our ongoing investment in the quality of our centres and people, at the same time as continuing to work closely with regulators to improve standards," he said. During the Victorian parliamentary hearing on Tuesday night, Greens MP Aiv Puglielli asked Ms Blandthorn about another troubled for-profit childcare group, Genius, which has seven centres in Victoria. Genius is currently in administration and the fate of its centres up in the air after failing to pay its financier, Gold Coast-based Finexia. "Given widespread complaints that staff were not getting paid, there was legal [action] from creditors due to millions of dollars, why was Genius and its owner Mr Darren Misquitta allowed to keep trading?" Mr Puglielli asked. Ms Blandthorn said that the state had "a role in regulation at some level but obviously insolvency and employment matters are in the Commonwealth jurisdiction". "Failure to pay wages or [rent] are not in themselves though offences under the national law, which we as a regulator have responsibility for," she said. "I would say though that our government is keen to continue to work with the Commonwealth and the states and territories to look at the adequacy of national law and regulations when it comes to that. "And just last week I had a conversation with the new federal minister and I also pointed out to her that it was a matter that a number of us want to have a conversation with her about at our upcoming education minister's meeting as well." The acting secretary of the Education Department, Tony Bates, said that the department lacked "powers to do broad-ranging financial searches". "The person did meet the requirements at the time of getting the initial approval as a provider," he said. "It's a very complex situation where there are company structures operating across multiple states. "I can say the Victorian regulator is working closely with interstate regulators to try and get a unified picture."
