Beaufort villagers face uncertainty as long-standing land dispute escalates

The Star21-05-2025

KOTA KINABALU: A long-standing land dispute in Kg Jimpangah, Beaufort took a tense and emotional turn today after four houses were demolished while villagers wept outside their homes, fearing more will follow in the days to come.
The incident has drawn widespread attention and criticism after videos of the demolition went viral on social media, showing residents in tears and shouting for help as excavators tore through wooden homes.
Consumers Front of Sabah (CFOS) secretary-general Hashima Hasbullah said that tensions escalated between the landowner and the community in February after the landowner allegedly acted rudely towards the villagers.
Hashima said many of the villagers have lived on the land for generations, dating back to when their grandparents worked as rubber tappers for the British Borneo Para Rubber Coy Ltd.
'When the British left, they allowed the former workers to continue living there. These families have been here since before Merdeka,' she said.
Efforts to secure the land began as early as 1991, when villagers applied to have the 5.34ha site gazetted as a native settlement. The application was never approved, despite several follow-ups.
Over the years, the government built and maintained public infrastructure in the area, including roads, electricity, piped water, and a community hall — which was upgraded to a mini hall in 2021.
However, in 2023, the Land Use Committee (LUC) rejected the gazettement application. Around the same time, the landowner began taking steps to assert ownership of the land.
Most of the 300 villagers rely on odd jobs, work in the private sector, or are low-ranking civil servants. Many have never lived anywhere else.
Hashima said several villagers have been arrested or investigated over the years for defending the land. A lawyer previously representing them later withdrew, leaving them unrepresented in court.
A woman breaks down in tears while watching her house being demolished in Kg Jimpangah.
'So when the eviction notice was served on May 7, and again today, we came in to monitor and help ensure things remained peaceful, without provocation,' she said.
Hashima said she personally brought a group of villagers to meet Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on May 15 to appeal for government intervention.
'The Chief Minister has personally requested the Lands and Surveys Director to seek an amicable resolution, and we understand steps are now underway. Thus, we ask for some compassion and discretion from the landowner. Since the state has promised to act, give it a little time,' she said.
Hashima also said she was disappointed that no elected representatives were present on Wednesday (May 21) to help manage the situation.
Beaufort is located about 90km south of Kota Kinabalu.
One of the villagers, David Ondu, said he was bracing for his house to be next.
'We really didn't expect this to happen. We thought the government had stepped in after we met the Chief Minister. But now four houses are gone, and our turn might come tomorrow.
'What can we do? We're slowly starting to empty our homes,' he said.
The dispute intensified earlier this month when five villagers were arrested under criminal mischief laws for allegedly trespassing and damaging property at the Mini Hall Kg Jimpangah. Villagers said they had only changed the lock and entered to clean the hall, believing it was public property.
The Beaufort District Council later confirmed that the hall falls under the jurisdiction of the local Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), and the charges were dropped on July 6 after the village committee's legal team sent clarification to the police.
Separately, 15 villagers are being investigated under the Sedition Act after a video showing the landowner's vehicle nearly hitting a villager went viral online.
The land is classified as Country Lease (CL) and was reportedly sold to a company in 2005.
Villagers have called for a temporary halt to the eviction while the state government works on a resolution. However, no response has been received from the landowner.
Meanwhile, Warisan vice-president Terrence Siambun condemned the demolition, describing it as 'inhumane and cruel even if it is carried out legally'.
'The GRS government often says 'Rumah Kita, Kita Jaga', but what we are seeing is destruction and betrayal. That slogan now feels like an empty promise used only to win votes,' he said.
He also questioned the absence of leadership on the ground.
'This should not and cannot happen no matter what the legal justification is. The people of Kg Jimpangah deserve better,' he said.

Two women arrested after theft spree at Changi Airport transit area

The theft spree took place at the departure transit area of Changi Airport's Terminal 3. - ST SINGAPORE: Two women transiting through Changi Airport were arrested for a series of shop thefts allegedly committed at different stores. In a statement on Monday (June 9), the police said they were alerted to a suspected case of theft from a Furla outlet at the departure transit area of Terminal 3 on June 2 at about 2.25pm. A purse was allegedly stolen, and through the use of closed-circuit television camera footage, officers from the Airport Police Division identified and found the two women involved inside an hour. The women, aged 29 and 30, and both Indian nationals, were detained before they could leave the country. The stolen purse was found on the younger woman, and a black haversack and a bottle of perfume - both also allegedly stolen based on preliminary investigations - in the luggage of the older woman. The three items had a total value of S$635. The women are expected to be charged in court on June 10 for theft in dwelling. If convicted, they can be jailed up to seven years, fined, or both. 'The police will continue to work closely with stakeholders and the community to prevent and deter cases of shop theft,' the statement said, adding that the police take a serious view of shop thefts. The most recent case of reported shop theft in Changi Airport was in May, when a British man was arrested for his suspected involvement in stealing more than $2,900 worth of items. - The Straits Times/ANN

Briton's death: How did backpacker enter construction site, asks Lee

KUALA LUMPUR: The authorities must investigate how a 25-year-old British national managed to trespass onto a construction site before falling into an elevator shaft. Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye questioned whether proper safety measures were in place, describing the incident as preventable. "The responsibility falls on the shoulders of the contractors and those managing the work site," he said. "Was there any signage at the site or a barricade? Were there any security personnel present? If they were on duty, they would not have allowed him to go through." He added that the company carrying out construction must conduct an internal investigation to prevent recurrence. Lee, who is also the former chairman of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, stressed that construction sites were legally required to have security measures in place to prevent trespassing. A construction work contractor is required to identify the perimeter of a construction site with a suitable sign and fence the area off under regulation 20(2) of the Occupational Safety and Health (Construction Work) (Design and Management) Regulations 2024. Anyone who violates the regulation may be liable to a fine not exceeding RM500,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both. On Thursday, the police confirmed that missing British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle was found dead in an elevator shaft of a partially under-construction condominium in Bangsar here. A post-mortem showed that the cause of death was a chest injury due to a fall from height.

Three men to go on trial next year over fires linked to UK PM Starmer

LONDON: Three men all linked to Ukraine will go on trial next April accused of involvement in a series of arson attacks on houses and a vehicle in London connected to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, a London court heard on Friday. Over five days last month, police were called to fires at a house in north London owned by Starmer, another at a property nearby where he used to live, and to a blaze involving a car that also used to belong to the British leader. Ukrainian Roman Lavrynovych, 21, is charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life. Fellow Ukrainian Petro Pochynok, 34, and Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, 26, who was born in Ukraine, are accused of conspiracy to commit arson. Lavrynovych and Carpiuc appeared by video-link at London's Old Bailey court on Friday where Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb set the trial for April 27 next year. Pochynok was not present for the hearing. In earlier hearings, prosecutors said the motive for the arsons was unclear. The men will enter formal pleas at a hearing in October, but the lawyers for Carpiuc and Pochynok said their clients denied involvement. Counter-terrorism police have led the investigation but none of the men have been charged with offences under terrorism laws or the new National Security Act, which was brought in to target hostile state activity. Police said the first fire involved a Toyota RAV4 car that Starmer used to own and sold to a neighbour. Days later, there was a blaze at a property where Starmer previously resided and the following day there was an attack on a house in north London that he still owns. Starmer, who has lived at his official 10 Downing Street residence in central London since becoming prime minister last July, has called the incidents 'an attack on all of us, on our democracy and the values we stand for'. Earlier this week a fourth man, aged 48, who had been arrested at London Stansted Airport in connection with the arson, was released on police bail.
