The European Poker Tour is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and the Monte Carlo tournament is a standout event in the poker calendar.
During the recent PokerStars European Poker Tour event at Sporting Monte Carlo, commentator Joe Stapleton named it a quintessential experience for those looking to try their hand against top players. "I think that as far as the way that poker is regarded, there's different ways of looking at it," Stapleton told the Mirror. "Some people look at it as the World Series of Poker and a Vegas thing, some people look at it as a home game thing.
"Some people look at it as a smoky room kind of thing. But some people look at it like the James Bond, tuxedos, Ferraris type of thing, and you get a little bit of that here.
"And I think that's the sort of thing that is always going to be appealing - especially to people who haven't ever experienced it for themselves. I think Monte Carlo specifically is a great first experience for an EPT event."
Even seasoned players like Noah Boeken, who attended the inaugural tournament in 2005, remain captivated by the event's atmosphere at the age of 44.
Boeken, clearly still enamoured with the setting, shared his appreciation: "I love this room. I just sent my girlfriend a video of when the roof goes open at the start of the day and the end of the day when the curtains come up. It's beautiful. I love big spaces and this room is amazing."

Having clinched a title in Copenhagen during the tour's first season and pocketing €147,679 twenty years ago, Boeken is among the few from that time still participating.
Reflecting on the early days, he said, "You'll always remember season one. "Rob Hollink won the first one here, a Dutch guy, a friend of mine. I won season one Copenhagen and that was on TV.
"I remember they built a stage the same as they do now but there were 200 people watching. You can't imagine it now but back then it was like 'oh my god, the final's going on'."
Boeken expressed his amazement at the longevity of the tour and his own journey within it, adding: "It's just amazing that this tour is still going on for 20 years and I'm happy to still be there. I used to be the youngest and now... I'm not the oldest but I'm not the youngest any more.
As the tournament progresses, the stakes rise on day two, with players having invested €5,300 to compete, though some qualify for less through satellite events. The top 175 out of 1,195 will secure at least €8,500, while the champion stands to win a staggering million euros.
Boeken managed to navigate a tense hour of gameplay, as the player count dwindled from 178 to 175. He clinched 129th place, pocketing just under $10,000 - marking his largest live cash win in 2025 so far, but a modest sum compared to larger earnings from earlier in his career.

Stapleton is set to join the live broadcast team alongside seasoned host James Hartigan. Hartigan started covering EPT Monte Carlo for PokerStars back in 2008 and describes his commentary role as akin to that of a commentator on Test Match Special, with the aim of enhancing the natural excitement of the players and gameplay while keeping viewers engaged.
The poker tables often attract celebrated figures from various realms. Chris Eubank Jr has arrived for an exclusively organised cash game, and celebrities from sports and film circles have made appearances in previous years.
"I remember Kevin Hart being here in 2017," Hartigan recounts. "Obviously we've had a lot of sports stars here over the years, Boris Becker, Rafa Nadal... we've had charity events here which people have come in specifically for, Neymar of course has played here for a few years. That's a huge part of poker, the fact that you never know who you're going to be sat down with, it's the only game in the world where you can be playing with elite professionals and celebrities and some bloke who lives three streets from you."
A handful of poker professionals from the early days are still returning to the game. "I would say very few, but ironically what happened... you see people come and go, you see a few consistent faces, but post-pandemic you suddenly saw a lot of the faces you hadn't seen for maybe 10 or 15 years came back," Hartigan explained. "Because they had rediscovered poker online and then wanted to get back on the live circuit," he explains.
"But there's one name who I'd always say is a consistent thread is Patrik Antonius. He lives here and jokes about the fact that he can literally walk to the venue, but he's also one of those few players who has just consistently remained competitive and relevant for all of those years, playing the highest stakes, still playing the super high rollers here. He is probably the person I associate with Monaco more than any other, partly because it's his home town but also because he still comes here and still plays the events here."

Antonius, the Finnish pro who clinched his first EPT main event in Baden in 2005, is among the contenders aiming to join the exclusive club of two-time winners. Victoria Coren Mitchell was the pioneer, securing her first win in 2006 and her second eight years later, with only two others achieving the same feat, yet no one has managed to win twice at the same location.
Despite the high stakes, there's no shortage of eager participants, with the first events split into two sessions across Sunday and Monday. There were several past Monte Carlo champions in attendance, including Nicolas Chouity (who pocketed €1.7m for his victory in 2010), Steve O'Dwyer (€1.2m in 2013) and Adrian Mateos (€1.1m in 2015 and an additional €1.4m in the Super High Roller in 2022).
The 2025 iteration of the Super High Roller is taking place just a stone's throw away in The Americas Room at the Monte Carlo Bay Hotel and Resort, where the atmosphere is decidedly more laid-back. Entry alone costs a cool €100,000, with over €2m up for grabs for the winner and €1.3m for the runner-up.
Yet one of the newly minted millionaires - sporting merchandise from three different poker companies - blends in so well that you could easily mistake him for any ordinary European chap in his twenties if you bumped into him on the street.
Of course, not all those vying for the big bucks are quite so inconspicuous. "There was one guy - I don't remember his name - he showed up to play the €100k Super High Roller one year and I heard that his boat had docked, he had no plans to play, he heard about it, he drove his Ferrari off the boat up to the front door and entered the event," Stapleton recounts.
"I think he was out in seven or eight minutes, back in his Ferrari, back on the boat an hour later. That's the kind of story you don't really hear that often, especially in places other than this."

Hartigan and Stapleton jest that, armed with their current knowledge as keen amateurs, they could have held their own in the 2005 Monte Carlo poker scene. At that time, even the top players only knew a fraction of what is known about the game today.
"If you look at how it was then, it was cowboys, it was crazy people, it was people with money but people that didn't know much about poker - including the pros," Boeken recalls. "We were pros, we were better than the rest, but if you put us [in games] now with our skill levels from back then, we would stand no chance."
However, one constant remains: the enduring appeal that keeps many returning. The European Poker Tour used to operate like a football season, running from September to May, culminating in a grand final in Monte Carlo. Now, it's just another stop on the tour, but being there makes it feel more than 'just another stop'.
"I think, having won or final-tabled this event, any time you go back in that room the memories would come flooding back," Hartigan reflects. "Even if you bust day 1, even if it doesn't work out for you this time, it's still going to have a very positive memory to play in that space.
"I think if you look at all of the stops on the EPT they all have their strengths, they all have their plus points, and that's why i can't give an answer to 'which is your favourite EPT, but I say it and i mean it when i say this is the best poker room we play in.

"I call it the most beautiful poker room in the world, and it is. The fact that you have, and I know that for reasons of tv we often have to have the curtains closed and the roof closed, but the fact that you can have that view over Monte Carlo Bay, the fact that you can have that roof open like Blofeld's volcano, it's just amazing, it's an incredible experience."
The final table took place on Saturday, guaranteeing each of the top eight players a six-figure prize. The game was won by Aleksandr Shevliakov, who home the seven-figure grand prize.
Following this events, some participants will compete in other European tournaments, while others may take a break before heading to Vegas in the summer. One certainty was that a new champion would be crowned, as all previous winners were eliminated before the final day.

Those seeking a second victory will get their next opportunity in Barcelona in August, with additional EPT events lined up in Malta and Prague later in the year. The desire to win remains strong for some, as Boeken states: "I'm still chasing that second win but I'm going to get there one day."

Amy Hart's heartbreaking fertility struggle as she tries for second baby
Love Island's Amy Hart has revealed that while she and husband Sam Rason are trying for another baby, she has faced a secret fertility struggle - admitting it's 'hard' to talk about. Amy Hart has admitted that while she'd 'love' more children, she's struggling to conceive this time around due to a fertility struggle. The former Love Island star, w ho already shares son Stanley with husband Sam Rason, has shared that doctors have said her BMI is higher than optimum for getting pregnant, meaning she is now trying to lose weight in order to become a mum again. 31-year-old Amy rose to fame on the dating show in 2019 and is hosting the Love Island Podcast again this year. She explained to Mirror: "I'd love more children. We're trying at the moment. It's obviously not been as simple as it was with Stanley, but I'm manifesting and doing all the right things. !I'm doing intermittent fasting to try and lose some weight, because though my BMI is not crazy high, it's higher than what's recommended for the optimum weight for getting pregnant." She continued: "I feel like at the moment it's quite hard to talk about online. Once, hopefully, I have some good news, then I'll be able to share more and help others." During the exclusive interview, below, Amy also discussed how she is balancing life as a mum and the new series of Love Island, which kicks off on Monday. Amy, how are you? Busy, balancing work and mum life? You know, I like to try and be two people – I don't like to blur the lines of work and mum life. I like to keep my days with Stanley work-free and the days I am working, my family or my husband's family help out. My childcare arrangements are a bit crazy but Stanley has a great network of people. The other day I said to him, 'Who's your best friend?' And he was like, 'Auntie Jane!' Do you feel pressure to portray motherhood in a certain way online? No, I'm quite lucky in that Stanley is quite straightforward. People think that I don't show real motherhood, and I'm like, 'Well I'm showing my motherhood.' Because I chose not to show him crying, having a tantrum, not showing him if he ever went to the hospital, and people say that's not real life. I'm like, 'I just have boundaries with my child.' My guiding light is, if my husband put this on his story of me, would I be annoyed? If the answer is yes, I don't put it there. What's the funniest thing Stanley has said or done? Oh, it's probably more that he just has to run everywhere he goes, full pelt! And his speech is so funny. Everything is 'that's so cool' or 'oh goody'. He just keeps us laughing, constantly. And how's married life with Sam? It feels just like it did before, we both feel quite free. We are in such a good place, we have such a good time. We always say that we both knew we would get married at some point, but we never thought that we would meet someone we got on so well with. READ MORE: Zara McDermott shares 'unreal' £30 hair waver that's been creating her go-to summer hair Do you have a plan for the next few years? You've spoken about freezing your eggs... I'd love more children. We're trying at the moment. It's obviously not been as simple as it was with Stanley, but I'm manifesting and doing all the right things. I'm doing intermittent fasting to try and lose some weight, because though my BMI is not crazy high, it's higher than what's recommended for the optimum weight for getting pregnant. I feel like at the moment it's quite hard to talk about online. Once, hopefully, I have some good news, then I'll be able to share more and help others. Any behind-the-scenes secrets from working on the Love Island podcast? I've heard it's gonna be the most dramatic series yet. I'm a superfan, so I almost, don't predict what happens, but I'm like, 'Oh I love this part.' But apparently that's all going to change this year, it's going to be completely different. We watch the episode live, so there's no way we can know about the drama ahead of the podcast. When we go on the pod, all our live reactions are fresh. What do you think of this year's islanders, who's your favourite? Well, there's a former British Airways hostess who started at Gatwick just like me, so that's really special. I think we know some of the same people. We love an air hostess. I'm really looking forward to seeing her. Are you still friends with islanders from your season? I love Amber [Gill], and everyone else, it's a bit like work colleagues. I don't live in London. I sort of have my own life down here. I love having a chat and seeing their news on Instagram, and when we see each other it's like no time has passed, but we don't live in each other's pockets. That's just life and part of growing up. How would you describe your confidence now compared to when you were on Love Island? I was about to jokingly say, I'm a lot heavier! But talking about confidence, I was only 57 kilos when I was on Love Island , and I was very self-conscious of my body, still. I wouldn't wear bandage dresses because I didn't think I had the body for it, whereas now, if I like a dress, then I will wear it. I also want pictures with my little boy on holiday, in the sea and on the beach. I don't want there to be a lot of, like, missing pictures and videos of his childhood, because I was a size 14. Making memories is more important.

Freddy Brazier announces he's going to rehab to 'get clean' after sad fallout with dad
Freddy Brazier, 20, has revealed he's going to rehab in Spain to get clean after battling a smoking addiction since age 12 Freddy Brazier has announced he is heading to rehab in Spain as he battles a long-standing addiction. The 20-year-old, youngest son of Jeff Brazier and the late Jade Goody, revealed he has been addicted to smoking since the age of 12 and is now taking steps to 'get clean.' The move follows reports of a strained relationship with his father Jeff, leading Freddy to leave the family home and move in with his maternal grandmother, Jackiey Budden, Mirror reports. On Instagram, Freddy opened up about his decision to seek treatment, saying: "I've decided that I will be cutting down and I want to go to Rehab In Marbs as I feel if I'm in England I won't take getting clean seriously." He described smoking as a "bad coping mechanism that turned into an addiction, something I relied on and something that made me feel sane and some what OK." Yet now, Freddy is determined to turn his life around. "I've found a boxing club and a rehabilitation centre. Ive found someone I want to get to know and I'm happy. I got a good bunch of friends and I [want to] get out and enjoy myself." His goal is clear. "I want to be clean so I can live happily and have healthy relationships with people and be there for all of my family rather then feeling like I'm in the middle and have to choose a side." Freddy also reflected on his struggle to feel loved, admitting, "I haven't been able to feel loved properly as I have never loved myself and it starts now." He hopes to embrace a new chapter, sharing: "I want to play football and take up boxing I want to be happy and be in a healthy relationship and have a healthy relationship with my Nana and my father." The young man ended his heartfelt message with a plea for privacy and understanding: "Every day is a new story about me and my Nana and father. It's getting boring now. Mind your business and have a good rest of the week x." Concerns about Freddy's wellbeing have grown this week after news emerged that he had moved out of his father's home to live with Jackiey Budden. Freddy and Jeff had previously been seen sharing a close bond, notably on the BBC series Race Across the World last year. However, their relationship now appears fractured, with Freddy growing closer to his late mother Jade's mother. Reports say Jeff is devastated by the situation and is considering legal action to prevent Freddy and his grandmother from spending time together. Defying his father's wishes, Freddy has continued to share photos with his grandmother on social media. One recent post alarmed fans as he listed the things he hates about himself, including his 'relationship with weed,' 'step parents,' and his inability to love properly. He also mentioned having 'family issues.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. The TikTok video was shared just a day before what would have been Jade Goody's 44th birthday. The late Big Brother star died aged 27 in 2009 after a battle with cervical cancer. Supporters flooded Freddy's post with messages of encouragement. One TikTok user wrote, "Ah man this is gonna be sad to watch," while another said, "Go home son, this is not what mum wanted for you sweetheart." A third added, "Sending you love Fred! Watched you in Race Across the World & you're such a decent lad with so much potential." The tension within the family extends beyond his father. Freddy was absent from his older brother Bobby's 22nd birthday party on Monday, an event reportedly marked by a "sadness" due to his absence. Bobby was said to have spent time with Jeff and his stepmother Kate instead. Freddy was just four when Jade passed away. Since then, Jeff has dedicated himself to raising Freddy and Bobby, striving to provide stability after such a traumatic loss.

Josh Kelly's and Remy Smith's doomed marriage from lavish wedding to sad split
Boxer Josh Kelly is returning to the ring and taking on Flavius Biea at the Newcastle Arena. Here, the Mirror looks back at the 'Pretty Boy' welterweight's former relationship with Remy Smith Josh 'Pretty Boy' Kelly, 31, is stepping back into the ring and taking on Flavius Biea, 35, at the Newcastle Arena - with hopes that securing a win will set him up for a fight with Connor 'Destroyer' Benn. With the former Olympian heading into his 19th professional fight, he has said he is keen to build on the momentum from the big fight - which will air on Channel 5 - and that he's ready to "enjoy" himself in the ring. "Whatever comes. I am just looking to go in there and enjoy myself," he has said. "When I am enjoying it, I am at my best, so whatever comes, I am just going to go in there and enjoy myself and forget about everything else. It is another fight, I have had 150 odd at amateur at the top level, now it is going to be my 19th fight as a pro, so it is all good... I cannot wait!" Both men are on good form, with the Romanian fighter enjoying a 12-match winning streak, and Kelly winning six fights previously - so boxing fans are bound to be in for a treat with this one. Whilst Kelly is going from strength to strength professionally - the 'Pretty Boy' of British boxing - who was previously a model - is increasingly attracting more attention outside of the ring and boasts 422,000 followers on Instagram. So what is life like outside of the ring for the 31-year-old dad of two? Here, the Mirror explores his life away from the spotlight and marriage to ex-wife Remy Smith. Early days of romance Josh and Remy - an influencer with 18,100 followers on Instagram - started dating in their early 20s, with Remy sharing a sweet snap of Josh leaning against the ropes of a boxing ring back in 2017, the same year he turned from amateur to professional. In another post dedicated to her partner in 2017, Remy captioned a sweet series of photographs of the pair with a touching tribute to Josh on his birthday. "Happy birthday to the fiancé...I just want to say I am so proud of an inspiration to so many people out there and that's something you should be proud working hard and I'll support you all the way through". Remy added: "It's only the beginning for you pbk [Pretty Boy Kelly]...thanks for making me the happiest girl ever. I love you from the bottom of my heart..." Hilariously, the couple also accidentally went viral in 2017, after a perspective-boggling holiday snap took the internet by storm. The image saw the couple standing in front of palm tree, but Remy just so happened to be carrying a handbag that was exactly the same colour as the tree's bark, which made it look like she was effortlessly carrying an entire tree. Remy took the internet's confusion in her stride, jokingly posting on her Instagram a screenshot from a Daily Mail article of the moment and captioning it: "My strength is seriously going viral now," and tagging her then-fiancé. Lavish Mayfair Wedding The pair tied the knot two years later in June 2019, in a seriously lavish ceremony. Boxing legend Frank Bruno was said to be in attendance, having been a mentor to Josh. Other big name guests reportedly included David Seaman, his wife Frankie who appeared on Dancing on Ice, as well as Ashley and Dawn Ward, and other faces from the boxing scene. Remy wore a stunning bridal gown designed by Galia Lahav with a dramatic long veil that featured intricate embroidery around the edge. Josh opted for a timeless white suit jacket by Tom Ford, with a black bow tie and smart, matching trousers. The couple tied the knot at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic church bang slap in the middle of one of London's most luxurious neighbourhoods. They then hosted a reception for all 165 of their loved ones - per the wedding photographer, Roberta Facchini - at the elite Royal Horseguards Hotel. The photographer also revealed that the guests were kept entertained by a magician and that the dinner was accompanied by "touching speeches" adding that, "the ambience of the beautiful reception was classy sophistication with a healthy touch of down-to-earth". When it came to the flowers, no expense was spared, with gorgeous arrangements placed on every table, and an incredibly extravagant flower arch behind the top table. Similarly, the wedding cake was stunning - with delicate floral decorations on the seven-tiered creation. Finally, when it came time to take to the dancefloor, the newlyweds chose Always Remember Us This Way - from the A Star Is Born soundtrack - for their first dance before their loved ones joined them for a boogie. Growing family The couple share two sons, the eldest of whom was present at their wedding. The boxer and Remy welcomed Joshua Junior to their family in the Autumn of 2018, with Remy sharing a heartwarming post in tribute to her first born: a photo of Joshua Junior as a tiny baby cuddling up to a massive, oversized teddy bear. " Little man is one week old today and what a week it's been," she wrote. "It's been the most amazing no love like it! I couldn't have done it without you the most amazing daddy and he is so lucky to have you," she added, tagging her partner, who seemed to have been called away from the newborn bubble for a boxing obligation. "We are missing you but tomorrow is the night you get under them lights again we are so proud of you! We can't wait to cheer you on and have you home again! Our champ". In May 2020, the couple welcomed their second son: Roman Paul Kelly. At the time social distancing restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which made labour for many women more lonely and frightening. Whilst Remy didn't share any details on how, or if, the pandemic impacted her experience giving birth, she hinted that it had been something of an overwhelming experience when she announced on social media that Roman had arrived. "Here he is it's certainly been a ride the last 24 hours, but our 6 pound 5 bundle of joy Roman Paul love you with all our hearts and can't wait to take you home to your big brother". Break u While both Remy and Josh regularly post their two beautiful sons on their social media - it seems the young couple have called it quits on their romance. The last time Josh mentioned his former wife on his social media was back in February 2023, when he captioned a holiday snap of himself with JJ and Roman by saying, "Love seeing my two boys growing up nothing more more sun and sand soon to and cheese these me and the wife @remykellyx live for these two little men." Remy has also changed her Instagram handle back to Smith, changing it from her married name of Kelly. What's more, Josh and Remy have also posted snaps with new partners this year, so it seems the pair have both moved on from the split. These days, 'Pretty Boy Kelly' is now dating a digital creator and founder of a marketing agency - Bego Maestro, who lives in Seville. The couple seem to be making it work long distance, with Bego captioning a post about Josh by saying, "The one who didn't want to love, is counting the days to see you again... "After all these months, the distance still makes me ball but without a doubt, having a date to see each other again makes the difference," and hinted that she was excited for the big fight, "Countdown begins to see us and your big proud of you". Bego and Josh have enjoyed a series of holidays together, heading on a luxury holiday to Dubai in recent months, and also taking his two little boys on holiday, including on a day to a waterpark. Remy also seems to have found new love, posting a series of cute snaps with her current partner, and captioning one: "Finding my best friend and soulmate in one person is truly special. Thank you for the endless giggles and smiles! I love you forever" and in another writing, "No one comes close".
