Researchers make troubling finding about widespread threat to public health: 'Especially when people are exposed to high levels'

A new 10-year study by University College London researchers has established a link between air pollution and cognitive decline in adults over 65.
While aging generally contributes to cognitive decline, it's so far unclear why some adults experience greater levels and acceleration of cognitive decay than others. The UCL study, published in The Journals of Gerontology, pointed toward nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) as factors.
The researchers targeted areas with high and low concentrations of PM2.5, which can accumulate in the lungs, and nitrogen dioxide, which is released by most fuel-burning machines, from gas stoves to car engines.
Upon evaluating the memory, executive function, language, and other such skills in older adults, the team discovered that those breathing in the most nitrogen dioxide and PM2.5 demonstrated the lowest cognitive ability. In particular, language capacity appeared to be the most affected.
"Although the biological underpinnings of the association between pollutant exposure and poor cognitive performance are still unclear, it has been suggested that increased air pollution is most strongly associated with impairment in the temporal lobe, which is essential for language," the researchers wrote.
Air pollution has already been linked to several health problems, including asthma, heart disease, and even fetal and childhood brain development. With this most recent study, the list keeps growing.
"Our study shows that air pollution is not just harmful to the lungs and heart but also brain health, especially when people are exposed to high levels for long periods," the study's lead author, Dr. Giorgio Di Gessa, expressed in a press release.
The research highlights that the very air we breathe can contribute to accelerated cognitive decay as we age. According to the World Health Organization, 90% of the global population breathes in polluted air regularly.
National movements toward regulating pollution and incentivizing clean energy technology can set positive precedents for industries and communities going forward.

It's one of the most impactful climate decisions we make, and we make it multiple times a day. The U.N. estimates about a third of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, the main driver of climate change, come from food. That pollution can come from several links in the food supply chain: how farmland is treated, how crops are grown, how food is processed and how it's ultimately transported. Maybe you've already heard the short answer to minimizing your diet's impact on the planet: eat more plants and fewer animals. The data backs up that suggestion. Emissions from meat-rich diets are four times higher than that of vegan diets. But so much focus on meats overshadows many other food choices that also impact the environment and can contribute to global warming. Here is a look at other important grocery store decisions: Swapping one serving of chicken per day for beef cuts a diet's emissions nearly in half. Ruminant animals such as cows, sheep and goats are the top drivers of emissions. Those animals 'are associated not only with nitrous oxide emissions, but they're also related to direct methane emissions because they burp them up while they digest food,' said Marco Springmann, professorial research fellow in climate change, food systems and health at University College London. Springmann said processed animal products have a higher impact on the planet, too: 'You need 10 times the amount of milk to make one unit of cheese.' So — and this is true of most food groups — the less processed the food, the smaller the environmental impact. Plant-based proteins like legumes, beans and nuts all boast a much lower climate impact. The standout here is rice, and not in a good way. 'Rice uses a ton of water. It uses gobs of fertilizer. There's flooded rice paddy fields, and that water actually breeds all kinds of bacteria, and those bacteria produce methane gas,' said eco-dietitian nutritionist Mary Purdy. Purdy said the most planet-friendly alternative is just eating a bunch of different grains. 'The wheat, corn and soy world is very, very familiar to us because we've been seeing it. It's been heavily marketed. When was the last time you saw a commercial for millet or buckwheat?' she asked. Diverse diets, Purdy said, incentivize biodiverse agriculture, which is more resilient to erratic weather — a hallmark of climate change — and makes healthier soil. When it comes to produce, minimizing impact is less about choosing between foods and more about buying based on the way that food was grown. Conventionally grown produce 'very likely is using pesticides, fertilizer, and maybe more water because the soil isn't healthy,' said Purdy. Purdy said organic labels, such as Regenerative Organic Certified, indicate those foods had a smaller climate impact when they were grown. The tradeoff is that organic food has a lower yield, so it requires more land use and is often more expensive. Local and 'in season' foods also have a smaller climate impact, but not just for one of the reasons you may be thinking of: emissions from international shipping. Every day, thousands of large ships transport goods, including produce, around the world, and the fuel they use is heavily polluting. However, 'it's mostly those local emissions on trucks that are actually impactful, not the international shipping emissions,' Springmann said. Also, food grown nearby tends to be grown in a way that fits with the local climate and is less harmful to the environment. 'We're not trying to grow oranges in some place in a greenhouse,' Purdy said. Plants win out over animals, again. Vegetable oils are less impactful than butter or lard. Springmann also said tropical oils are healthiest in moderation, such as those from coconuts or palms, because they have a higher fat content. Plus, palm oil is associated with deforestation. As for nut butters, almonds might be a great option for limiting carbon emissions, but they require a lot of water. One study out of Tulane University found that a serving of peanuts has an emissions footprint similar to almonds but 30% less impact on water use. Throwing less food away might sound obvious, but roughly a third of food grown in the U.S. is wasted. Meal planning, freezing leftovers and checking the fridge before heading to the grocery store all help cut waste. New synthetic ‘skin' gives robots human touch

By Stephen Beech A new synthetic "skin" gives robots the human touch. The low-cost, durable and highly-sensitive material can be added to robotic hands just like a glove, say scientists. It enables automatons to detect information about their surroundings in a way that's similar to humans, according to research published in the journal Science Robotics. The research team, from the University of Cambridge and University College London (UCL), developed the flexible, conductive skin, which is easy to fabricate and can be melted down and formed into multiple shapes. They say the new technology senses and processes various physical inputs, allowing robots to interact with the physical world in a more meaningful way. Unlike other solutions for robotic touch, which usually work via sensors embedded in small areas and require different sensors to detect different types of touch, the entirety of the electronic skin developed by the British team is a sensor, bringing it closer to human skin. Previously, signals from different sensors could interfere with each other, and the materials were easily damaged. Although the new robotic skin is not as sensitive as human skin, the researchers say it can detect signals from more than 860,000 tiny pathways in the material. That enables it to recognise different types of touch and pressure, such as the tap of a finger, a hot or cold surface, damage caused by cutting or stabbing, or multiple points being touched at once, in a single material. The research team used a combination of physical tests and machine learning techniques to help the robotic skin "learn" which of these pathways matter most, so it can sense different types of contact more efficiently. As well as the potential for humanoid robots or human prosthetics where a sense of touch is vital, the researchers say the robotic skin could be useful in industry and even disaster relief. Study lead author Dr. David Hardman, from Cambridge's Department of Engineering, said: "Having different sensors for different types of touch leads to materials that are complex to make. "We wanted to develop a solution that can detect multiple types of touch at once, but in a single material." Co-author Dr. Thomas George Thuruthel, of UCL, said: "At the same time, we need something that's cheap and durable, so that it's suitable for widespread use." Their solution uses a type of sensor that reacts differently to different types of touch, known as multi-modal sensing. While it's challenging to separate out the cause of each signal, the researchers explained that multi-modal sensing materials are easier to make and more robust. The team melted down a soft, stretchy and electrically conductive gelatine-based hydrogel, and cast it into the shape of a human hand. They tested several different electrode configurations to determine which gave them the most useful information about different types of touch. From 32 electrodes placed at the wrist, they were able to collect more than 1.7 million pieces of information over the whole hand, thanks to the tiny pathways in the conductive material. The skin was then tested on different types of touch. The researchers blasted it with a heat gun, pressed it with their fingers and a robotic arm, gently touched it with their fingers, and even cut it open with a scalpel. They then used the data gathered during testing to train a machine learning model so the hand would recognise what the different types of touch meant. Dr. Hardman said: "We're able to squeeze a lot of information from these materials – they can take thousands of measurements very quickly. "They're measuring lots of different things at once, over a large surface area." Dr. Thuruthel added: "We're not quite at the level where the robotic skin is as good as human skin, but we think it's better than anything else out there at the moment. "Our method is flexible and easier to build than traditional sensors, and we're able to calibrate it using human touch for a range of tasks." The team is now hoping to improve the durability of the electronic skin and to carry out further tests involving real-world robotic tasks. Spacecraft films first view of the Sun's south pole

The first ever video and images of the Sun's south pole have been sent back to Earth by the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter spacecraft. The new images will enable scientists to learn how the Sun cycles between periods of raging storms and quiet times. This is important because intense solar activity can affect satellite communication and knock out power grids on Earth. The new images show a shimmering bright atmosphere which in parts reaches temperatures of a million degrees Celsius. Interspersed are darker clouds of gas, which although much cooler, are still a searing one hundred thousand degrees. The pictures are the closest and most detailed ever taken of the Sun and will help scientists learn how the star that gives us life on Earth actually works, according to Prof Carole Mundell, ESA's Director of Science "Today we reveal humankind's first-ever views of the Sun's pole," she says. "The Sun is our nearest star, giver of life and potential disruptor of modern space and ground power systems, so it is imperative that we understand how it works and learn to predict its behaviour". From Earth, the Sun is so bright that it appears like a featureless disc. But at different frequencies and using special filters, scientists can see it in its true form: as a dynamic fluid ball, with magnetic fields twisting and turning on the surface and conjuring up flares and loops of gas into its atmosphere. It is these magnetic fields that determine when the Sun rages and spits out particles toward the Earth. Scientists know that the Sun has a quiet period when the magnetic fields are ordered, with our star having a fixed magnetic north and south pole. This is a phase when the Sun is not able to produce violent explosions, but these fields then become complex and chaotic as they reorientate with the north and south poles flipping approximately every 11 years. During the chaotic period the Sun tries to reduce its complexity and violence spills out, as bits of the Sun hurtle toward the Earth. These solar storms can damage communications satellites and power grids, though they can also cause beautiful auroras in the sky. According to Prof Lucie Green of UCL, it has been hard to predict this activity with computer models of the Sun because there has been no data on the migration of the magnetic fields towards the poles. But that has now changed "We now have the missing piece of the puzzle," she told BBC News. "The reversal of the polar magnetic fields on the Sun has been one of the big open questions in science and what we will be able to do with Solar Orbiter is measure for the first time the really important fluid flows that grab pieces of the magnetic field across the Sun and transport them to the polar regions". The ultimate goal is to develop computer models of the Sun so that this so-called space weather can be predicted. Accurate forecasts will enable satellite operators, power distribution companies, as well as aurora watchers, to better plan for intense solar storms. "This is the Holy Grail of solar physics," says Prof Christopher Owen, who specialises in solar wind studies using data from the spacecraft. "Solar Orbiter will enable us to get to the bottom of some of the basic science of space weather. But a little more work needs to be done before we get to the point where we see signals on the Sun that we can rely on to predict eruptions that might hit the Earth". Solar Orbiter also has captured new images of chemical elements at different layers of the Sun and their movement. These have been taken using an instrument called SPICE, which measures the specific frequencies of light, called spectral lines, which are sent out by specific chemical elements hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, neon and magnesium at known temperatures. For the first time, the SPICE team has tracked spectral lines to measure how fast clumps of solar material are moving. These measurements can reveal how particles are flung out from the Sun in the form of solar wind.
