Liquor scam: SuspendedIAS quizzed by ACB
Ranchi: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday interrogated suspended IAS officer Vinay Kumar Choubey and joint excise commissioner Gajendra Kumar Singh in connection with the Rs 38-crore liquor scam.
Meanwhile, Choubey has moved the Jharkhand high court, challenging his arrest and prosecution initiated by the ACB.
Notably, the interrogation continued for several hours at the ACB office here. DGP Anurag Gupta, who also heads the ACB, visited the place for a short period during the interrogation.
The ACB team took Choubey from the paying ward of Rims to its office at about 11 am. A resident doctor also accompanied the accused to take care of his health.
In his petition to the HC, Choubey sought the quashing of his criminal proceedings and the FIR filed in connection with the liquor scam. Challenging his arrest by the ACB, Choubey's petition said he has been falsely implicated in the case and there is no evidence against him and all allegations are false.

Three thefts in two weeks on metro rail network
Ahmedabad: Infocity police in Gandhinagar registered a theft case on Wednesday after materials worth Rs 3.81 lakh were stolen from the GNLU metro station at Koba village. This was the third theft reported on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro rail network in the past two weeks. Ravindrasinh Bihola, a 27-year-old security guard, filed the FIR with Infocity police. He stated that he was posted at the GNLU metro station for the past three months. He was on night duty from 8 pm to 8 am. According to his complaint, the theft occurred during the intervening night of May 30 and May 31. Bihola said that the stolen items were stored by the Omega Lift Company in large and medium wooden boxes under the elevated track at three locations near the station. At about 6.30 am on May 31, he noticed that the wooden panels of the boxes were broken, and the materials inside were missing. He informed the incoming guard and his supervisor, Kailash, who then contacted the lift company officials. The stolen items include 480 non-standard base gaskets, 456 anchor bolts, 912 spring washers, and various trimming gaskets. Omega Company representatives inspected the location and confirmed the theft. Earlier, on May 22, around 500 metres of copper cables worth Rs 9 lakh were stolen from near Shahpur metro station, which caused a disruption in service for nearly 7 hours. Another case of service disruption was reported on June 2, when 700 metres of copper cable worth Rs 17.85 lakh was stolen between Koba Circle and Old Koba stations. With regard to the latest case, Infocity police registered a case of theft against unknown persons and began an investigation. Cops are also probing if there is any link between the present case and the two earlier incidents. Metro rail authorities are yet to issue a statement regarding the latest theft reported on Wednesday.

Fake HC lawyer dupes woman of 3 lakh
Kolkata: A complaint was filed at Tiljala PS against an individual who allegedly impersonated a high court lawyer and defrauded a Picnic Garden resident of Rs 3 lakh. The accused allegedly forged official court orders, notices, and even judges' signatures, and set up mock virtual court sessions and falsely used the HC registrar's name to convince the victim of his legitimacy as a legal representative at the Calcutta HC. "He systematically deceived me into transferring over Rs 3 lakh," the woman said. When she turned suspicious, the accused became unreachable. "We collected technical evidence and started a probe," said an officer.

BBMP readies 3 lakh notices for owners under-assessing properties
In a crackdown on building owners under-assessing their properties and paying less tax to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), the civic body has decided to soon serve notices to around 2.5-3 lakh properties. The notices will come along with fines for concealing the true extent of the built-up area. According to Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner (Revenue), the BBMP used drones to verify the extent of property declared by the owner under the self-assessment scheme and found that many had under-declared. 'Based on this, we will issue notices to property owners and ask them to pay the tax dues,' he said. According to sources, flaws were detected in almost a sixth of the 20 lakh properties self-assessed by their owners. For instance, under the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS), a building with five floors had declared it as having only three floors. This was flagged during the drone survey carried out by BBMP in the city limits. In the notices, the BBMP will direct the property owners to pay tax for the total extent of the building, apart from levying penalties for the same. The civic agency could also go for a one-time settlement (OTS) scheme to clear the dues of these property owners, as it did with the property tax defaulters last year, sources added. The SAS, introduced in 2008, has been marred by several issues. In 2022, erstwhile BBMP – now Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) – was flooded with complaints after thousands of property owners were served notices on account of wrong zonal classifications in the SAS portal. Last year, BBMP introduced the OTS scheme for property tax defaulters. Around 3.81 lakh property owners were found to have defaulted on their taxes and were provided a chance to pay by waiving compound interest on arrears and reducing penalties by 50 per cent. The crackdown on under-assessment of properties is expected to generate additional revenue for BBMP, which has a revenue target of around Rs 5,700 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal.
