Steven Spielberg will introduce a ‘Jaws' 50th anniversary special
Before there was 'Land Shark,' 'Baby Shark' and 'Sharknado,' there was the great white one.
The 1975 summer blockbuster 'Jaws' ignited a cultural obsession with sharks. Fifty years later, the its famed director will celebrate the movie with a NBC special. The network will commemorate the anniversary with a three-hour telecast of the film on Friday, June 20 at 8 p.m ET, featuring a special introduction from Steven Spielberg.
And in a true 'rising tide lifts all boats' strategy, there's a plan to make all of Universal awash in 'Jaws' content.
'Jaws' will stream exclusively on NBC's streaming service, Peacock, through July 14. The platform is also launching a dedicated 'Jaws' collection with all four films from the franchise and a new documentary, 'Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story.'
'Universal is home to the biggest movies in the world and it doesn't get any bigger than 'Jaws,'' Jenny Storms, chief marketing officer for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming said in a statement.
The beaches will be empty this summer!

Hidden among the Faithful are a group of Traitors hand-selected by Cumming. Each night, the Traitors 'murder' a Faithful, in hopes of reaching the finale together and collecting the prize money for themselves. The Faithful, meanwhile, try to identify the Traitors and banish them from the game, so that they can claim and split the prize money at the end. The most treacherous show on reality TV is back with a whole new cohort. "The Traitors" revealed its Season 4 cast on June 13, according to a press release from Peacock. The lineup includes up stars from franchises like "Big Brother," "Love Island" and "The Real Housewives," as well as a certain celebrity football mom. The Emmy-winning series will see the return of "Real Housewives of New York City" favorite Dorinda Medley, who was the first person eliminated from the game last season. Fans of "Survivor" can look forward to seeing Season 29 winner Natalie Anderson, Season 44 winner Yam Yam Arocho and beloved podcast host Rob Cesternino. Meanwhile, "RuPaul's Drag Race" fans will be rooting for Season 10 icon Monét X Change to take it all. ‘Smash' to close just over 2 months on Broadway
NEW YORK — 'Smash,' the Broadway show based on the NBC series of the same name, announced on the heels of a disappointing Tony Awards that it will be closing curtains later this month. The stage musical — which traces the roller coaster of making a Broadway hit centered on Marilyn Monroe's starry origin story — will end its brief tenure at the Imperial Theatre on June 22, Variety and Playbill report. News of the pending closure comes just two months after the Tony-nominated production opened on April 10, with a score from Marc Shaiman and Scott Witt. But, much like the Emmy-winning series that inspired it, the show had high aspirations but has hit many a low note. The New York Times reports that the show's weekly grosses peaked at $1 million for the week ending April 20 but ended this past week grossing a measly $656,161. For the latter period, Variety notes that the Imperial was at 66% capacity. Reviewing the stage rendition for the Daily News, Chris Jones recently bemoaned the new 'Smash' for lacking 'quality of surprise.' 'Especially given the level of talent involved here, the adaptation will be deeply disappointing even for die-hard fans of the source material,' which became a cult favorite and even netted six Emmy nominations, winning one for Outstanding Choreography. 'Smash' aired for two seasons on NBC from 2012 to 2013 and starred Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katharine McPhee and Anjelica Huston, as well as real-life Broadway stars Christian Borle and Megan Hilty. Though the Broadway iteration scored two Tony nominations — Best Choreography (Joshua Bergasse) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical (Brooks Ashmanskas) — 'Smash' was snubbed for Best Musical consideration at Sunday's awards show. The show, directed by Susan Stroman, couldn't even perform during the broadcast, despite requesting to do so, per The Times.
