Pumas and Griquas face each other in final battle of 2025 SA Cup war
The home SA Cup final that the Pumas and their coaching staff promised their fans will became a reality when the Mpumalanga team take on the Suzuki Griquas later today, Saturday, May 24.
The Pumas beat the Griquas 39-34 at Mbombela Stadium in the league phase of the SA Cup on April 25. This was the only defeat in the Griquas SA Cup campaign.
The Pumas remain undefeated, with 10 consecutive wins.
The two teams' SA Cup stats, after 10 matches each, are separated by the narrowest of margins. The Griquas have scored 574 points and the Pumas 576. The Griquas have conceded 222 points, the Pumas 221. The Kimberly team have scored 85 tries to the Pumas' 84; and the Griquas have conceded 32 tries and the Pumas 29.
But the finalists results and stats over the past 800 minutes of rugby will count for nothing come 18:30. The 2025 champions simply need the most points on the scoreboard after 80 minutes.
Finals are all about pressure – the team that better handles the mental and emotional aspect of the game will win. Physically and tactically the Pumas and Griquas could not be better prepared. That said, a pressure implosion can lead to unforced errors, poor decision making, poor discipline and conceding penalties.

The 2025 SA Cup final at Mbombela Stadium will be the first home final for the Pumas in 12 years, and only their fourth home final in their 56-year history.
They defeated the Eastern Province Kings 53-30 in the 2013 Currie Cup First Division final at Mbombela Stadium. The other two finals being the 2009 Currie Cup First Division final at the Puma Stadium in Witbank in which the Pumas beat South Western Districts 47-19, and the 2013 Vodacom Cup final at Mbombela Stadium in which the Lions beat the Pumas 42-28.
In the past six seasons the Pumas and Griquas have played each other in four finals, with each winning two.
Tickets for the final are available at Computicket and at the stadium, and cost R50 for adults and R20 for children.

OPINION: Loftus showdown between Bulls and Sharks is SA's biggest match this year
A place in the grand final against Leinster or Glasgow awaits the winner of Saturday's URC semifinal in Pretoria. It is not a final, but Saturday's clash between the Bulls and Sharks at Loftus Versfeld is possibly the biggest match that local rugby fans will see in South Africa this year. Of course, the Barbarians, and Italy and Georgia and Australia and Argentina will play against the Springboks in the coming months, and those matches are sure to be entertaining, but none will match the intensity of the Bulls taking on the Sharks for a place in the United Rugby Championship final. There have been other local URC derbies this year and there was the SA Cup final between the Pumas and Griquas a few weeks ago, and there will also be some big Currie Cup clashes, including the final, later this season, but Saturday's showdown at Loftus has all the ingredients to be a classic, memorable affair. Bulls and Sharks have much to prove Both teams are desperate to win the URC title, maybe the Bulls more so after falling short in the final game on two previous occasions, the latest setback being just a year ago when they were shocked at home by Glasgow. There is a feeling the Bulls deserve to win the URC title, and that it is their right. They have played quality rugby to again give themselves a chance, but getting over the line won't be easy; it never is. The Sharks, meanwhile, have invested heavily in getting some of the best players into their set-up, but have only the second tier Challenge Cup win last season to show for their efforts. The players will be keen to show they're good enough to go all the way in the URC, too, and pay back the faith shown in them by their wealthy backers. Then there are all the star players in both teams, and boy, do the Bulls and Sharks have quality in all departments. There will be plenty of rivalry and competition between a number of the players so we could also be in for a spicy affair. There's a lot on the line at Loftus on Saturday. May every rugby fan enjoy the occasion; it may just end up being the best match of the year in South Africa.

According to Rapport, the Bulls are poised to bring lock Marvin Orie back to Pretoria as part of a sweeping recruitment drive ahead of the 2025 Currie Cup. Orie, who last played for the Boks at the 2023 World Cup, is set to join from French club Perpignan. The 32-year-old previously spent time at Loftus between 2014 and 2016 before stints with the Lions, Stormers and Ospreys. He is one of several names linked to the Bulls' squad revamp. Loose forward Jeandre Rudolph is also tipped to return to Loftus, having decided to leave the Cheetahs following their SA Cup campaign. Former Junior Bok, Western Province and Zebre lock Dylan de Leeuw (23) is reportedly another recruit who has been training with the Bulls for the past two months while recovering from injury. These additions reinforce a Bulls intake that reportedly includes the arrival of Handre Pollard, Jan Serfontein, Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg and Paul de Wet in July.
