Korea Herald's 'Architecture Talk: Evolving Hanok' raises hopes for hanok's future
The Korea Herald's "Architecture Talk: Evolving Hanok" brought together a group of so-called 'Hanok Avengers' on Wednesday at the Eundeok Cultural Center — a beautifully restored, century-old building in central Seoul that exemplifies the elegance of traditional Korean architecture.
Building on a six-part series titled "Evolving Hanok" published in May by The Korea Herald, the third edition of the annual "Architecture Talk" was jointly hosted with the state-run Architecture & Urban Research Institute.
Dubbed the 'Hanok Avengers' by Shin Chi-hoo, manager and research fellow at the National Hanok Center, the speakers shared insights and experiences that reflected the current state -- and evolving identity -- of hanok in contemporary Korea.
In addition to Shin, the event featured leading figures in the field: Hwang Doo-jin, director of Doojin Hwang Architects; Jeon Bong-hee, an architecture professor at Seoul National University; Cho Jung-goo of guga Urban Architecture; Kim Yong-mi, architect and CEO of GS Architects & Associates; and Daniel Tandler, co-founder of Urbandetail Architecture.
'The National Hanok Center had set the goal of achieving a hanok renaissance by 2022, but we failed. We will achieve that goal by 2032,' Shin said, emphasizing that many hanok neighborhoods have vanished under a development-first mindset.
Still, the fact that such a goal could even be articulated marks a significant cultural shift. Over the past decade, the notion of a hanok renaissance has gained momentum, fueled by devoted architects, policy support and growing interest from younger generations.
Kim, the panelist with the longest experience working with hanok, recalled once thinking her passion for traditional Korean architecture was just a personal preference -- one decidedly outside the mainstream. That changed when she came across architect Hwang Doo-jin's 2006 book, "Hanok Has Returned." 'I was shocked,' she said, adding that the book transformed her view, helping her realize that her passion was part of a larger, emerging movement.
Kim also reflected on a small but meaningful gathering she had a decade ago with fellow architects Hwang Doo-jin and Cho Jung-goo -- all passionate about hanok. Since then, the small group of architects who are engaged seriously in hanok design has remained largely the same, Kim noted, except for one notable addition: Tandler. At the time, Tandler was just beginning to explore hanok. Today, he is recognized for his dedication to the form and his growing contributions to its evolution.
"We need to worry less about making mistakes. As people do experiments with hanok, there will inevitably be some strange outcomes. And that's okay -- people can simply see them and move on," Tandler said.
"Because building hanok is far from the futuristic images of sci-fi movies, there once was a time that I thought I wasn't taking part in building the future. I now believe we need to create new architectural spaces that align with the concepts and philosophies of our time -- spaces that even Millennials and Generation Z can appreciate," Cho said.
The discussion also touched on key elements that define hanok and offered valuable insights for those still grappling with what the term truly means. Among those reflecting on hanok's evolving identity was Dagmar Schmidt Tartagli, the ambassador of Switzerland to Korea, who shared with the roughly 90 participants the embassy's experience of introducing the 'Swiss Hanok.'
'The Swiss Hanok' came about through an open architecture competition.
'At first, people told us, 'This is not a hanok,' because it wasn't built in the traditional way or linked to heritage hanok construction,' she explained. 'Yet the more I listened to this architectural debate on what hanok can become, the more I understood. People began referring to the embassy as the 'Swiss Hanok.' When you incorporate these elements — the madang, the light, the spatial flow -- there's also a kind of globalization aspect," Tartagli said.
From the international community in Seoul, Michela Linda Magri, director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Seoul, and Marie Antonia von Schonburg, President & CEO of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were among those attending the event.
Choi Jin-young, president of Herald Media Group, spoke about how his mood shifted upon entering the hanok. 'After going through all sorts of big and small meetings, by around lunchtime I often find myself completely drained. The workload is quite intense, and today was one of those days. But the moment I stepped into this place, all that fatigue just melted away. I felt an incredible sense of calm — as if I had arrived at a sanctuary for the soul,' he said.
Choi Jong-bok, chairman of Zyx Technology, which was one of the sponsors of the event, expressed his confidence and aspiration to become a global leader in CAD solutions for architecture, especially for hanok.

Controversy grows over Jim Rogers' ‘endorsement' of Lee Jae-myung

Investor tells The Korea Herald he does not support or endorse anyone Rival parties on Monday bickered over the authenticity of the Democratic Party of Korea's claims of veteran US investor Jim Rogers' letter of "endorsement" of its presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung. The controversy snowballed Monday after Rogers denied his endorsement of Lee in several interviews with local media from late Sunday. In an email inquiry from The Korea Herald, Rogers replied, "I do not support or endorse or anything any candidate there," when asked whether he supports or has endorsed Lee. The Democratic Party refuted the investor's remarks in a joint statement released to the press by Kim Jin-hyang, the former head of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, and Song Kyung-ho, a professor at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, who is based in London. The two were closely involved in the process of receiving the letter from Rogers and announcing it to the public. Song explained in the statement that Rogers did express his 'support' for Lee, which was interpreted as his endorsement of the candidate, which he said he regretted. Kim said Rogers' 'support of candidate Lee Jae-myung' was real, while admitting that there were 'some mistakes' made in the communication between Song and the US investor. The two also included screen captures of the conversation between Rogers and Song regarding Rogers' 'support' of Lee on the messenger app WeChat from May 26 to May 29. The screen-captured images showed that Rogers replied 'Thanks! This is fine' to a document titled 'A Message from Jim Rogers: Peace and Opportunity on the Korean Peninsula' drafted by Song. Song has asked for confirmation on whether he could release the document under Rogers' name, according to the images. The document released by the Democratic Party shows Rogers saying, "Let us invest in peace. Let us invest in the future. Let us invest in Korea. So now. ... The choice is Lee Jae-myung." Rogers then adds he "strongly supports" Lee Jae Myung, calling him "a leader with the courage and vision to end the era of confrontation and open a new chapter of peace, growth, and global leadership for Korea." The People Power Party denounced the Democratic Party's claims as 'an international fraud' and called for Lee to drop out of the presidential race. People Power Party Interim Chair Kim Yong-tae said during the party's election committee meeting held Monday morning that the Democratic Party's claims are 'incorrect stories spread by a person who met (Rogers) briefly a few years ago.' On Thursday, several members of the Democratic Party's central election committee announced in a press conference that Rogers decided to 'endorse' Lee. The 8-minute press conference was entirely dedicated to Rogers.

J INTS BIO to Present Global Clinical Results from JIN-A02, a Fourth-Generation EGFR-TKI, at ASCO 2025

Significant anti-tumor responses and reduction of brain metastases observed SEOUL, South Korea , June 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- J INTS BIO, a company specializing in the development of therapeutics for cancer and rare diseases, officially announced interim results from the global Phase 1/2 clinical trial of JIN-A02, its fourth-generation EGFR-TKI drug candidate, at the American Society of Clinical Oncology 2025 (ASCO 2025), the world's largest oncology conference, held in Chicago, USA. JIN-A02 is an oral, fourth-generation EGFR-TKI designed to overcome resistance mutations (such as C797S) that develop after treatment failure with third-generation EGFR-TKIs, which are currently the first-line therapy for EGFR-mutant Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is currently undergoing clinical trials in South Korea, the United States, Thailand, and other countries. Key efficacy and safety results from Part A (dose escalation) of the multi-center clinical trial (NCT05394831) were presented. 'Confirmed' clinical response observed in patients with disease progression after 3 rd Generation EGFR TKI and chemotherapy One of the key findings of the ASCO presentation was that tumor responses were sustained in specific dose cohorts, with confirmed partial responses (PRs) verified by independent evaluation. Confirmed PRs were observed in 50mg,100mg and 300mg QD dose groups, providing clinical evidence of anti-tumor activity. In the 50 mg dose group, patients achieved a 77.3% reduction in tumor size, maintaining a PR over six consecutive treatment cycles (from cycle 3 to cycle 13). In the 300 mg dose group, a confirmed PR was observed with a 39.7% tumor size reduction, including a significant reduction in brain metastatic lesions. In the 100 mg dose group, a PR was also reported with a 35.3% reduction in tumor size, and brain metastatic lesions remained stable, further supporting the potential of JIN-A02 in treating brain metastases. Safety confirmed up to 300 mg, with therapeutic signals in brain metastases No dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) or serious adverse events were observed with JIN-A02 at doses up to 300mg, which is six times the dose level when PR was first observed, demonstrating a favorable safety profile even at higher dose levels. The majority of adverse events reported at 300mg were mild (Grade 1-2) and included for the first time, Grade 1 skin rash, diarrhea, and skin desquamation in 3 out of 5 subjects – events commonly associated with EGFR inhibitors and generally considered clinically manageable. Importantly, there were no reports of systemic toxicities such as cardiovascular events or hepatotoxicity, supporting the drug's excellent safety profile. This safety and tolerability have translated into extended treatment durations in real-world settings, with a patient still on JIN-A02 after one year and seven months. In addition, the trial demonstrated notable responses in brain metastases first noted at 100mg, suggesting that JIN-A02 achieves therapeutically relevant concentrations in brain tissue. JIN-A02 gains national spotlight as government grants accelerate development In addition to the ASCO announcement, J INTS BIO continues to achieve noteworthy results in Korea. Recently, it was selected for the '2025 Baby Unicorn Fostering Project' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, officially recognizing both our scientific technology and commercialization potential. The 'Baby Unicorn Fostering Project' is a government project that focuses on developing promising startups with innovative technologies and growth potential in the global market as 'potential unicorns'. Companies selected for this project will receive full government support in recognition of their technological prowess and growth potential. With these accolades, JIN-A02 will receive dual funding for its Phase 2 trial and global expansion over the next two years, which is expected to be a decisive point to significantly accelerate the pace of clinical and commercialization in parallel with private investment. It is also significant as a case of securing confidence in the 3 arena of technology, marketability, and global scalability, as the recognition came from different government departments. Based on these achievements, we plan to initiate the Phase 2 clinical trial of JIN-A02 in before the end of this year, in discussions with the US FDA. "The ASCO presentation of JIN-A02's ability to induce anti-cancer responses and its ability to respond to central nervous system metastatic lesions is of great significance," said Dr. Anna Jo, CEO. "The government's continued support is a recognition of our technical capabilities and potential for growth. We will take advantage of this opportunity to accelerate global clinical expansion, technology transfer, and indication expansion to realize our goal of early commercialization"

IBK gains preliminary nod for Vietnam unit after 8-year wait

The state-run Industrial Bank of Korea has secured preliminary confirmation from the Vietnamese central bank, bringing the policy lender a step closer to establishing a full subsidiary in the country. The State Bank of Vietnam issued a confirmation letter for IBK's subsidiary application on May 30, marking the official start of the review process, the Financial Services Commission announced Monday. The confirmation comes nearly eight years after IBK first submitted the request. The confirmation letter indicates that the screening process has officially begun and that all necessary documentation for regulatory review has been submitted. Vietnam's central bank has rarely approved new foreign banking subsidiaries in recent years. The last such approval was granted to Singapore's United Overseas Bank in September 2017. Once IBK's Vietnamese subsidiary is established, Korea will have three banks operating in Vietnam — alongside Shinhan Bank and Woori Bank — drawing level with Malaysia as the country with the most foreign bank subsidiaries in Vietnam. IBK currently operates two branches in Vietnam, one in Hanoi and the other in Ho Chi Minh City. These branches are expected to be absorbed into the new subsidiary once it is established. Earlier in May, the Vietnamese central bank also approved the Korea Development Bank's plan to open a branch in Hanoi, six years after the policy bank first submitted its request. KDB currently operates only a representative office in Vietnam and does not conduct direct business operations in the country. The FSC highlighted that these recent approvals are the result of continued bilateral diplomacy between Korea and Vietnam, including high-level summits, executive discussions, and official correspondence. 'The issuance of confirmation letters for IBK and KDB is an unprecedented outcome that reflects the government's financial diplomacy and the banks' proactive efforts,' the FSC said. Officials from IBK and KDB stated that the policy lenders aim to support both Vietnamese businesses and Korean companies expanding into the country, thereby contributing to mutual economic growth. IBK plans to focus on financing small and medium-sized enterprises, while KDB intends to support large-scale infrastructure projects.
