Iraq's highest judge steps down for medical reasons

Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council on Sunday confirmed the retirement of Jassim Mohammed Aboud al-Amiri, Chief of the Federal Supreme Court, the nation's highest judicial authority.
In a statement, the council announced that a committee formed under the amended Federal Supreme Court Law No. 30 of 2005 approved al-Amiri's retirement due to health reasons. It nominated Munther Ibrahim Hussein, Deputy President of the Federal Court of Cassation, as his replacement, with the appointment now awaiting a presidential decree.
Al-Amiri's departure follows the June 19 resignation of nine Supreme Court judges — six permanent members and three alternates — who stepped down just before the court was scheduled to rule on the Kurdistan Region salary dispute and the maritime border agreement with Kuwait. While early reports suggested Aboud had resigned with them, judicial officials later clarified he had instead retired for medical reasons.
The nominated replacement, Hussein, born in Baghdad in 1963, earned a law degree from the University of Baghdad and graduated from the Judicial Institute in 1998. He has served on the Federal Court of Cassation since 2018, currently holding roles as deputy president, head of its criminal panel, and reserve member of the Supreme Court.

In his remarks, Al-Sudani praised the Ministry's efforts and underlined the significance of promoting locally made products, reaffirming that "Made in Iraq" is a strategic direction to revitalise national industry. He highlighted that Iraq's construction sector is undergoing a major transformation across government, institutional, and investment-driven projects. Key highlights of the Prime Minister's announcement include: Targeted support for retirees, families on the social protection network, relatives of martyrs, and employees. A directive to establish a mechanism linking loans and construction permits with access to subsidised construction materials. An emphasis on using cooperative models to regulate material prices through public-private collaboration-similar to the earlier food-focused Hypermarket initiative. Availability of building materials that meet Iraqi standard specifications at reduced prices. Approval of investment permits for around one million residential units, alongside initiatives through the Housing Fund and Real Estate Bank. Prioritisation of industrial zones and investment facilitation for private sector-led manufacturing projects. Ongoing coordination with the Union of Industries and the Union of Contractors. A commitment to expanding the initiative, starting with Nineveh and Basra governorates. Al-Sudani reaffirmed the government's stance that the private sector is a critical partner in satisfying domestic market demand and creating employment for Iraqi youth. In remarks to Turkiye's Anadolu Agency, Barrack framed the escalation as an opportunity to reshape regional dynamics. 'What happened between Israel and Iran is a chance to say, 'Enough — let's open a new path,'' he stated. He also pointed to growing regional openness to renewed diplomacy, highlighting that populations across the Middle East have grown increasingly fatigued by prolonged tensions and entrenched narratives. 'I think you will see a return to the Abraham Accords, particularly as conditions in Gaza improve — that is the main bet,' he added. Expanding on the implications beyond Gaza, Barrack identified the post-conflict phase as a moment to advance broader peace efforts involving Israel, Syria, and Lebanon.
