KaBHI staff want to continue services
Mangaluru: Healthcare personnel employed under the Karnataka Brain Health Initiative (KaBHI) have appealed to the health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to continue their employment across all districts in the state.
A delegation of KaBHI staff met the minister during a grievance meeting at the Circuit House in Mangaluru on Saturday, and submitted a memorandum.
They explained that nearly 165 staff members including neurologists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, clinical psychologists, nurses, and district co-ordinators will lose their jobs if the govt conducts separate recruitments without considering the experience of those who are currently working in various districts.
"We worked under the KaBHI programme since Dec 2023, after successfully writing the exam and passing the interview conducted through Nimhans. While working as per the guidelines of the Karnataka govt, we ensured that the KaBHI programme, the first brain health initiative in India, was implemented successfully in the state. However, preparations are being made to conduct fresh recruitments. Those who are working at present in all districts should be allowed to continue in the services," the delegation urged.

They also pointed out that fresh recruitment will incur huge expenditure for the govt. "The govt will have to spend a huge amount on the appointment process, and to train the newly appointed staff. Moreover, the existing services under the KaBHI programme are also likely to be affected if all the staff are recruited afresh. We urge the govt to stop the fresh recruitments and invite applications only for the vacant posts," the delegation urged the minister.
Rao contacted the officials in Bengaluru and assured the delegation that he will do the needful at the earliest.

Karnataka leads in overall FSW population at 15.4% HYDERABAD: As India fights to shed its HIV burden — currently third highest in the world — the latest Programmatic Mapping and Population Size Estimation (PMPSE) study has found that Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have among the highest concentration of female sex workers — per hotspot — in the country. Overall, though, Karnataka emerged at the top of the charts with 15.4% of India's total FSW population. It was followed by Andhra Pradesh (12%), Maharashtra (9.6%), Delhi (8.9%), and Telangana (7.6%). Together, these five states accounted for over half (53%) of India's estimated 9,95,499 female sex workers. The study, published in PLOS Global Health, covered 651 districts across 32 states and UTs. Led by Pradeep Kumar of the National AIDS Control Society, it calls for periodic, community-led PMPSE to enable responsive public health strategies. The mapping exercise identified 43,579 FSW hotspots across India with presence of FSWs in 642 districts, including 34 with over 5,000 FSWs. AP was found to have five such districts, and Telangana six. FSWs were also reported in 16,095 villages. Telangana recorded the highest concentration of FSWs per hotspot — 38 per location —followed by AP with 29. Around 14% of FSWs were found operating exclusively through 10,718 network operators, and 9% in Link Worker Scheme (LWS) villages. There were as many as 568 mapped network operators in Telangana, one of the highest in the country. In AP, each LWS village had an average of 10 FSWs operating exclusively within the village, while in Telangana, it was 8. The PMPSE also underscored Telangana's transgender (H/TG) individuals per hotspot —around 25 — again the highest in India. It surpassed Delhi (24), Gujarat (21), AP and Maharashtra (20 each). Although Delhi had the highest overall H/TG population (18.6%), Telangana stood out for its concentrated presence at identified locations. Nationally, 96,193 H/TG individuals were estimated, with 90.8% found at hotspots. Telangana's share came from fewer mapped hotspots but with higher density. In total, 6,585 H/TG hotspots were identified, with key informant data gathered from 15,231 individuals within the community. For men who have sex with men (MSM), Telangana reported the highest density again —50 MSM per hotspot — followed by Delhi (29) and Goa (27). Though AP contributed 6.3% to the national MSM population, Telangana's role in terms of hotspot concentration points to a more complex landscape of risk.

Fourth Covid death reported in state amid rising cases
Karnataka recorded its fourth Covid-related death of the year on Saturday after a 63-year-old man with underlying health conditions succumbed in Bengaluru, bringing renewed attention to the state's ongoing battle with a modest surge in infections. According to the health department, the deceased was being treated for oral cancer and tuberculosis. He had been admitted to a private hospital in the city on May 21 with complaints of general weakness and was undergoing chemotherapy. He died on May 29 due to a jugular vein thrombosis and cancer-associated weight loss, with Covid detected incidentally. The state's active Covid caseload stood at 238 as of Saturday. In the preceding 24 hours, 58 new cases were reported while 53 patients were discharged. Since the beginning of 2025, Karnataka has logged 425 total cases, including 183 recoveries and four fatalities. Testing levels remain steady, with 420 samples examined in the last day — comprising 354 RT-PCR and 66 Rapid Antigen Tests — and a positivity rate of 13.8%. The case fatality rate currently stands at 1.7%, according to official data. Hospital admissions remain limited. Thirteen Covid-positive individuals are undergoing treatment, including one in the ICU of a private hospital. The rest are on isolation beds across both government and private facilities. The majority of patients — 225 — are recovering in home isolation. Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao addressed the situation, reassuring the public that the numbers do not warrant panic. 'The current position does not require panic or restrictions. Officials and experts are monitoring continuously. Further decisions will be taken in consultation with the Centre,' he said. The government has stepped up its medical inventory, ensuring the availability of 2,500 rapid antigen test kits, 1.3 lakh RNA extraction kits, 5,000 RT-PCR kits, and two lakh viral transport medium (VTM) kits. An additional 5,000 RT-PCR kits are also being procured to support continued testing over the next month. Weekly meetings of the state's technical advisory committee have been mandated to track trends and respond to developments. On the possibility of imposing travel restrictions amid rising cases in neighbouring Kerala, the minister clarified that no such move is under consideration. 'Such measures, if at all needed, will be decided by the Centre after inputs from the state,' he said.
