Thane gaushala fined for accusing court of 'bias' over plea for custody of animals
A Thane Sessions Court on Monday imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Shree Leela Purshottam Gaushala Seva Trust for seeking the transfer of hearing in a case, claiming it would not get justice from the concerned court. The gaushala had moved an application for transfer of proceedings related to the interim custody of animals seized under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976.advertisementThe animals had been taken into custody by Bhoiwada Police and handed over to the gaushala. The accused in the case later sought interim custody of the animals, to which the gaushala responded with its own custody application.According to the gaushala, the court showed a bias during the hearing. It alleged that the judge seemed to have made up his mind after the accused's lawyer argued the matter in detail, while the gaushala's lawyer got only five minutes.
Citing this, the gaushala approached the Sessions Court for the transfer of the case and for the removal of certain structures in the lower court's order.However, Sessions Judge SB Agarwal observed that the lower court had merely recorded the conduct and sequence of events factually. According to the order, the gaushala's advocate asked for 1.5 to 2 hours to argue the case, to which the judge responded that he was holding charge of four courts and needed to deliver a judgment.advertisementFollowing this, the lawyer began shouting in court, saying he had lost faith in the proceedings and would not argue the matter further.Judge Agarwal ruled that while a reasonable apprehension of bias is necessary to justify the transfer of a case, none existed in this matter. He also dismissed the plea to remove parts of the earlier order, stating that they did not amount to structures."In such circumstances, the application deserves to be rejected with fine," Judge Agarwal noted while directing the gaushala to deposit Rs 10,000 within two weeks.

The authorities have confirmed that the bodies of two persons are at Bowring Hospital and that of four others at Vaidehi Hospital. Six people are being treated in the ICU of the Vaidehi Hospital and three are admitted to the ICU. The government of Karnataka had earlier cancelled the victory parade from Vidhana Soudha to Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, citing security reasons.

‘No date for six months': Ashok Gehlot slams BJP govt over delay in Kanhaiya Lal beheading case
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Bhajan Lal Sharma government over the delay in courts in the 2022 beheading of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli. In a post on X, Gehlot, who was the Rajasthan chief minister at the time of the incident, said that: 'BJP did a lot of politics on the murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal of Udaipur and made it the main issue of Rajasthan elections. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case on the very night of the incident. The NIA, an agency under the BJP government at the centre, has this case but even after three years of trial, the culprits have not been punished in a case of such a clear nature'. On June 28, 2022, two people — Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse Mohammad — had posed as customers and hacked to death Kanhaiya Lal Teli at his shop in Udaipur, over a post shared by him on social media in support of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The BJP leader had made comments about the Prophet during a live television debate. 'The family members of Shri Kanhaiyalal have told that this case is not being run on fast track. This case is pending in NIA court, Jaipur. The additional charge of NIA court was with the judge of CBI court who has been transferred due to which the case is not being heard. There has been no date in the case for the last six months,' Gehlot said. 'Before this, the statements of witnesses were going on but the statements of the three main witnesses have not been recorded yet. Of the accused arrested in this case, two have been granted bail so far,' Gehlot said, referring to Mohammed Javed and Farhad Mohammad Sheikh alias Babla. This month will mark three years since the murder, he wrote. 'Rajasthan police arrested the criminals in just 4 hours. Shri Kanhaiya Lal's family was given Rs 50 lakh as compensation and his two sons were given government jobs. But BJP spread a rumour among the public that only Rs 5 lakh was given as compensation and played politics of five lakhs and fifty lakhs,' Gehlot said. Had the investigation been with the Rajasthan Police and not been taken over by the NIA, 'they probably would have been sentenced during our government's tenure itself but it seems that BJP is only doing politics on this case', he said. 'It does not seem that they have any intention of providing justice to the victims,' the former CM said. However, NIA lawyer Sneh Deep told The Indian Express that 'the delay is on the part of the accused'. He said that the accused have been seeking date after date on various grounds, including the demise of an advocate, seeking time for a new one, and dissatisfaction with the one provided to them. 'The advocate of one of the accused comes from Udaipur. He says that he can't come daily so he needs time between hearings. The NIA wants day-to-day hearing in the case and has filed an application for the same,' he said. In November last year, the Supreme Court had issued notices to the NIA and Mohammed Javed on a petition filed by Teli's son Yash Teli against Javed's bail, given in September, by the Rajasthan High Court. While Javed was accused of conducting a recce, the high court had said that 'prima facie, there is not enough evidence to suggest that the appellant conspired with Riyaz Attari or that the appellant knew Riyaz was going to commit the offence of murder.' Earlier, Farhad Mohammad Sheikh alias Babla, 31 at the time of his arrest in July 2022, was granted bail in September 2023. At least 9 persons were arrested by the state and central agencies in the case.

Protest Turns Violent: Protesters torch ethanol factory's vehicles
Jogulamba Gadwal (Mahabubnagar): A large-scale protest by villagers against the construction of an ethanol factory at Pedda Dhanwada in Rajoli mandal of Jogulamba Gadwal district turned violent on Wednesday. The factory, being set up by Gayatri Renewable Fuels Private Limited with an investment of Rs 190 crore on 30 acres near the banks of the Tungabhadra river, has drawn sharp opposition from residents of 12 surrounding villages who fear it will destroy their agricultural lands and pollute the environment. Tensions flared after police placed several farmers under house arrest the night before and deployed heavy security near the construction site. This was seen as an attempt to suppress the protest, leading to widespread public anger. Early in the morning, hundreds of villagers, including women and elderly, stormed the site upon noticing renewed construction activities. They were enraged to see JCBs operating, tents erected, and a large container installed on the site. In the chaos that followed, the protesters set fire to a container, overturned vehicles, smashed windows of earthmovers, and dismantled temporary structures. The police, caught off guard, struggled to contain the crowd. Meanwhile, Gadwal DSP Mogulayya visited the site and appealed for calm, stating that no one should take the law into their hands and that legal action would be taken if any violations were found. Villagers, however, remain determined to continue their agitation, declaring that they will not allow any polluting industry to destroy their livelihoods. For the past two years, locals have been raising objections through peaceful protests and appeals to the authorities, demanding that the project be halted due to environmental concerns. However, they allege that neither public hearings nor proper consultations were held before granting permission for the factory. Farmers said they were inspired to act after learning about pollution and health hazards caused by similar ethanol factories in Chittalur of Narayanpet district and Parlapalli in Karimnagar. They believe their fertile fields, which produce green crops, will be turned barren if the factory is allowed. Several leaders, including Congress's Sampath Kumar, MLC Challa Venkata Ram Reddy, and local MLA Vijayudu, had earlier extended support to the protest. Officials had suspended the work and promised that construction would not resume without public consent, but recent developments showed otherwise.
