G4 geomagnetic storm predicted tonight, Northern Lights viewing possible across North Alabama
The Space Weather Prediction Center is forecasting a G4 geomagnetic storm to continue during the night of June 1 into the morning of June 2. In order to see the Northern Lights this far south in North Alabama, the Kp index has to be high. The Kp value is something we look at that's associated with the strength of the geomagnetic storm. The center is forecasting a Kp index between 7 and 8 after dark and into the early overnight hours. Around here, we need it to be between 8 and 9 for us to see the lights. The last time we had a spectacular show here in North Alabama, the G4 storm that was predicted strengthened to a G5 and the Kp index was between 8 and 9!
The sky should be mostly clear tonight but we will be battling the smoky conditions in our area from the Canadian wildfires. This could hinder viewing. In order to see the Northern Lights you have to get away from city lights and use a long exposure camera, which you can use on your smart phone.

Hot, hazy through Wednesday before a stormy Thursday
Happy Tuesday! It's a quiet, cool, comfortable, and foggy start to the day. The thickest of fog will be found in our typical valley locations, so be sure to drive safely. Temperatures are in the 40s/50s which means you may need a light layer (sweater, light jacket, etc.) early on. The one accessory you won't want to forget today? The shades! Highs will hike into the upper 70s to low 80s with tolerable humidity, sun, clouds, and wildfire smoke. That extra haziness in the sky because of Canadian wildfire smoke will have minimal impacts on our overall air quality. Our AQI will check in at moderate today which means those most sensitive groups (elderly, very young, lung/health conditions) should take it easy. Overnight into Wednesday morning, it's hazy and mild with lows near 60. Wednesday will be very hot, sunny, and dry with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. It will be commonplace to see some fair weather clouds bubbling up late in the day as a cold front approaches from the northwest. Overnight into Thursday morning, a few showers can't be ruled out in northern New York. Lows will only tumble into the mid 60s. After a warm Thursday morning, it will be easy to get back into the mid 80s Thursday afternoon with a mix of sun, clouds, and isolated strong to severe storms. The best chance for those big boomers will reside from central Vermont and points south, but it's something we're continuing to fine tune and watch closely. Rain and strong to severe storms expected Wednesday in Southeast Michigan
A new front and an area of low pressure will bring rain and the risk for some strong to severe storms for Southeast Michigan by Wednesday afternoon. As the front approaches, there will be rain and some thunderstorms. All of Southeast Michigan will be at a one out of five on the severe risk scale. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Timing for the storms will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit The main threats will be strong, damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour or greater, as well as one-inch hail. NEXT Weather/CBS Detroit Before the rain and storms, temperatures will reach the mid and upper 80s on Tuesday and again on Wednesday afternoon. What does a realistic pro-AI take look like?
One thing that has irritated me for years is the claim AI will change everything — it's just an article of faith, and I'm not inclined toward religion. Here is a rational argument about how AI will change programming, and it also level-sets by saying what that means: 'If you're making requests on a ChatGPT page and then pasting the resulting (broken) code into your editor, you're not doing what the AI boosters are doing.' We all deserve better arguments for AI actually being useful, like the one Thomas Ptacek makes here.
