Iraq seeks 250,000 poll workers for parliamentary elections
Shafaq News/ On Monday, Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced it is seeking 250,000 poll workers to staff this year's parliamentary elections.
As of June 9, more than 187,800 individuals had applied, including government employees, university graduates, and students, the Commission reported.
IHEC also requested approval from the Prime Minister's Office to issue letters of appreciation to those participating in the one-day election process.
Scheduled for November 11, the vote will be Iraq's first parliamentary election since 2021, when turnout fell to a record low of 41%, amid widespread public disillusionment with the political system.

The planned Union on-site assessment visit scheduled for September 2025 has been deemed premature given the need for further demonstrable progress across core aviation safety oversight areas. Under current arrangements, EU member states must continue prioritising ramp inspections of all Iraqi-certified carriers to verify compliance with international safety standards. The Commission stated it would take further action if safety information reveals imminent risks from non-compliance with international standards. Iraq offers support for Lebanese Investors and Workers

Iraq's Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Mr Ahmed Al-Asadi, has confirmed his country's readiness to provide all possible facilitation for Lebanese workers in Iraq, provided that they comply with legal procedures designed to ensure their rights and protection. The remarks were made during a meeting with Lebanon's Minister of Labour, Dr Mohammad Bahjat Haidar, on the sidelines of the 113th session of the International Labour Conference in Geneva. The two ministers discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in investment and encouraging Lebanese business owners to return to invest in Lebanon. Mr Al-Asadi acknowledged the impact of Lebanon's economic crisis on capital flows, especially in light of past failures in the banking sector. However, he affirmed Iraq's commitment to supporting Lebanon's economic recovery by encouraging Iraqi investors to explore opportunities there. He described investment as fundamental to national development, noting that Iraq has seen significant investment-driven growth over the past two to three years. On the subject of foreign and Arab workers in Iraq, Al-Asadi highlighted concerns about the large number of workers entering the country illegally. He stated that Iraq's Council of Ministers has issued a decision to regularise the status of such workers, enabling them to obtain residency and register with the Ministry of Labour. This step ensures their eligibility for legal wages, social security registration, and broader labour rights. MP calls for investigation into Basra's Governor over petro-dollar funds
Shafaq News/ On Monday, Basra lawmaker Faleh al-Khazali called for a formal investigation into Governor Asaad al-Eidani over his failure to respond to parliamentary inquiries regarding the fate of petro-dollar funds allocated to the province in 2022. According to two official documents, al-Khazali addressed four letters to the governor beginning in February 2024 but received no reply. In response, he contacted the head of the Basra Provincial Council, urging the formation of an investigative committee led by the council's Integrity Committee chair to question al-Eidani on the matter. The documents also included a request to establish a joint investigative committee comprising the Federal Board of Supreme Audit, the Integrity Commission, and the Council of Representatives. The committee would be tasked with verifying the allocation and disbursement of Basra's 2022 budget funds, identifying the beneficiaries, and reviewing the quality of completed projects. Al-Khazali stressed the need to audit the records of companies contracted under the allocated funds and assess their compliance with implementation requirements, emphasizing the importance of making the investigation results public and holding those responsible accountable under the law and constitution. The lawmaker stated that the al-Muhaila station in Abu al-Khaseeb cost 110 billion dinars, while total spending under Governor al-Eidani's administration has reached 12 trillion dinars. According to al-Khazali, 'such funds could have supported the construction of five similar projects in areas including al-Madina, al-Sadiq, and Basra's city center to alleviate public suffering.' Earlier, Governor al-Eidani responded last Friday to al-Khazali's accusations, calling on the lawmaker to 'support his claims with evidence ' and urged him to stop 'misleading public opinion.'
