Google Unveils Gemma 3n: Advanced Offline AI Model for Phones with Just 2GB RAM
Google has officially launched Gemma 3n, its latest on-device AI model that's designed to run seamlessly even on smartphones with as little as 2GB of memory—and it doesn't need an internet connection to function. First teased in May 2025, the model is now available for developers worldwide.
Gemma 3n stands out by supporting multimodal input, including text, audio, image, and video, all processed directly on low-power devices like smartphones and edge devices. This allows real-time, AI-driven features previously reliant on cloud computing to now be executed locally.
At its core is MatFormer—short for Matryoshka Transformer—Google's innovative architecture that mirrors the structure of Russian nesting dolls. According to the company, this design enables each model to contain smaller, independent models, allowing performance to scale according to device capability.
Gemma 3n is being offered in two variants:
E2B, optimized for devices with 2GB of RAM
E4B, designed for those with 3GB RAM
Despite comprising 5 to 8 billion parameters, both versions are optimized for efficient operation. A key innovation here is Per-Layer Embeddings (PLE), which help shift processing tasks from the device's GPU to the CPU, conserving memory while maintaining speed.
In addition, KV Cache Sharing allows for much faster processing of lengthy audio and video files. Google says this enhancement doubles the model's responsiveness, making it ideal for applications like voice assistants and live video analysis on the go.
For audio capabilities, Gemma 3n integrates a modified version of Google's Universal Speech Model. This enables it to support features like speech-to-text and language translation on-device. Tests show particularly strong results for English to European languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese.
On the visual front, MobileNet-V5, Google's latest lightweight vision encoder, powers Gemma 3n's image and video analysis features. It supports real-time video streams up to 60 frames per second, with better accuracy and speed than previous models—all while consuming less power.
To encourage innovation, Google is offering access to the model via tools such as Hugging Face Transformers, Ollama, MLX, and llama.cpp. It also launched the Gemma 3n Impact Challenge, where developers can compete for a share of a $150,000 prize pool by building practical offline AI applications.
What truly sets Gemma 3n apart is its ability to run entirely offline, which is a game-changer for privacy-focused applications or regions with limited internet access. It supports content understanding in 35 languages and includes support for over 140 languages overall.
With Gemma 3n, Google is setting a new benchmark for what AI can achieve on mobile and edge devices, without needing the cloud.

‘Difficult country to trade': Trump calls off trade talks with Canada, slams digital services tax
US President came down hard on Canada over its decision to impose a Digital Services Tax (DST) on American technology companies, calling it a "direct and blatant attack" on the United States. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump announced the immediate suspension of all trade discussions with Canada on Friday. Citing what he called excessive tariffs on American agricultural exports, Trump claimed that Canada has long been a "very difficult country to trade with." "For years, they have imposed tariffs on dairy products that have cost our farmers up to 400%," Trump wrote. He further accused Canada of following the European Union, which has also implemented similar digital taxation policies that are currently under discussion with the US government. 'They are obviously copying the European Union, which has done the same thing,' he said. In a sharply worded statement, Trump declared that the US would soon impose tariffs on Canadian goods. 'We will let Canada know the tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period,' the post warned. Canada's digital services tax, first proposed years ago, is aimed at ensuring that large multinational tech firms, many of which are US based, pay taxes on revenues generated from Canadian users. The policy has drawn criticism from US lawmakers and trade officials who argue it disproportionately targets American companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta. While the Trump administration has been in talks with Ottawa over trade, this statement marks a clear break, signalling a return to his combative 'America first' stance. There was no immediate response from Canadian officials, but trade experts warn that the sudden halt in dialogue could escalate into a wider economic dispute, potentially affecting billions in cross-border commerce.

Germany orders Apple, Google to remove Deepseek app over data concerns
Karin Matussek Apple Inc. and Google's Android have been warned by a top German privacy regulator that the Chinese AI service DeepSeek, available on their app stores, constitutes illegal content because it exposes users' data to Chinese authorities. The formal notification comes after DeepSeek ignored a May request to either pull its app from app stores in Germany or put in place safeguards when collecting local users' data and transmitting it to China, Berlin data protection commissioner Meike Kamp said in a statement on Friday. 'Chinese authorities have far-reaching rights to access personal data,' Kamp said. 'DeepSeek users don't have enforceable rights and effective legal remedies available to them in China, like they're guaranteed in the European Union.' Hangzhou-based DeepSeek shocked the global tech industry in January with its R1 large language model, which the Chinese startup claimed could rival much larger US systems at a fraction of the cost. After the Chinese app ignored requests to comply, the Berlin agency invoked a provision of the EU's Digital Services Act, which puts the onus on tech platforms like Apple and Google to take down illegal content on their platforms. They both must now swiftly review the notice and decide on how to comply, according to Kamp. While the regulator could have also fined DeepSeek, Kamp decided against it, because she wouldn't be able to enforce the penalty in China. 'We received the notice, and are reviewing it,' a Google spokesman said in an emailed statement. Apple declined to comment. DeepSeek didn't immediately reply to emails seeking comments. The German move follows a similar step by Italy's privacy regulator in January. In the US, authorities have concluded that DeepSeek gave support to the Chinese military and intelligence efforts and is expected to keep doing so, according to an American official. Lawmakers in Washington are preparing bipartisan legislation that would ban federal government agencies from using DeepSeek and other AI tools from foreign adversaries.q

India looking at option of buying more S-400 air defence systems from Russia
ANI 27 Jun 2025, 22:37 GMT+10 By Ajit Dubey New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): With the S-400 air defence missile systems performing very well during Operation Sindoor, India is considering the option of buying two more squadrons of S-400 long range surface-to-air missile systems from Russia, defence sources told ANI. The sources said more systems of the S-400 are being considered due to security threats in view of the recent hostilities and the time to be taken in the development and deployment of the indigenous LRSAM programme, codenamed Project Kusha by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, with Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited as its development and production partners. The Indian side would prefer to get S-500 air defence system which has more range than the S-400 but it would require a clearance from the top Russian leadership for its sale, they said. The S-400 performed exceptionally in Operation Sindoor taking out multiple Pakistan Air Force fighter and airborne early warning aircraft. It also managed to create a record of sorts by successfully hitting an aircraft at a range of 300 plus kilometres. India is also awaiting the delivery of two more squadrons of the five S-400 squadrons that it had ordered in a 2018 deal. The first three squadrons have already been received and operationally deployed. Just before the delivery of the fourth squadron, war broke out between Russia and Ukraine. The systems meant for India were probably used in the war. The Russian side has now assured the delivery of the remaining two systems in the next financial year. Indian defence teams have also raised the issue with the Russian side and they have given assurances to not extend the schedule further. (ANI)
