Wrexham owner shows he hasn't forgotten chairman's 'never heard of them' quip

Daily Mirror3 days ago

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has sent a classy message to Oldham Athletic chairman Frank Rothwell after the Latics secured promotion from the National League
Rob McElhenney has extended congratulations to a football club chairman who previously expressed ignorance about Wrexham 's Hollywood co-owners.
Oldham Athletic owner Frank Rothwell aimed a jibe at McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds prior to an FA Cup match between his team and Wrexham in 2022. During an ITV interview, Rothwell made light of the two actors' achievements, claiming he had never heard of them and hadn't watched their movies or TV series.

"I don't know who the hell they are," Rothwell said. "I know they're film stars and all the girls go 'woo' but I've never seen anything they've been in.

"These lads have bought a football club for as cheap as they possibly could do so they could tell their friends in Hollywood that they own a club. When they decide they've had enough of this and sell to another investor, it [Wrexham] will disappear. That won't happen to Oldham."
However, Wrexham emerged victorious, defeating Oldham 3-0 in the cup clash and later secured promotion from the National League that season. Despite Rothwell's slight, McElhenney and Reynolds showed their light-hearted side, responding with a humorous video documenting his life.
They said: "Born in England in 1950, he grew up to be a 72-year-old man with a hat and glasses. He founded Manchester Cabins in 1979, he's also the oldest man to row across the Atlantic Ocean. He's got a nice smile. Very nice. Gentle. And he likes to shake hands, looks firm."
They also generously contributed £1,600 to Rothwell's fundraising efforts for Alzheimer's Research UK, as he tackled a solo Atlantic crossing in 2024. The Oldham chief expressed his gratitude, saying: "This is what I'd like to say to Ryan and Rob. Thank you so much for donating. You have given what I've done credibility."
Oldham emerged as winners in the National League play-off final on Sunday, beating Southend 3-2 after extra time. McElhenney wittily harked back to Rothwell's memorable quote as he extended his congratulations after the final whistle.

John Benson said: "Amazing. Love how from that first interaction it was all in jest, no arrogance and from then was nothing but love and comedy and that @VancityReynolds and yourself clearly 'get' what supporting/following football is about."

Chris Wall posted: "Class act Rob, great that everyone sees Frank's part in all this." Another wrote: "Thanks Rob, that's a nice touch, we are over the moon." Someone else added: "Absolute class and bants in equal measures."
Oldham are set to compete in League Two next season, whilst Wrexham are gearing up for a stint in the Championship, having clinched second place in League One this term. It marks the first time the Red Dragons will grace the second tier since 1982.

Joe Aribo makes transfer decision as Russell Martin holds 'trust' card amid Rangers return clamour

The playmaker endured a tough campaign with Southampton and suffered another Premier League relegation Southampton playmaker Joe Aribo has reportedly told the club he wants to leave this summer. And Russell Martin 's arrival at Rangers has left fans dreaming of a return to the Scottish Premiership for the Nigerian international. ‌ Aribo is facing the prospect of playing Championship football next term after the Saints finished rock bottom of the Premier League - leading to his second relegation since leaving Ibrox behind in 2022. ‌ The 28-year-old has remained a fan favourite with the Light Blues' faithful having wrote his name in Rangers history by netting in the Europa League Final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. And it appears that a move away from St Mary's is on the cards after struggling for regular game time following Martin's sacking in the midst of a dismal English top flight campaign last term. Following the departure of the now-Gers' boss Martin, Aribo would manage just 10 appearances under Ivan Juric and Simon Rusk - barely making the matchday squad in the later stages of the campaign. The Daily Mail reported following the end of the campaign that the playmaker had made it clear to the club that he "wanted" an exit after dropping out of the top flight with just a year remaining on his contract. And Turkish outlet Fotomac now claim that the player has told his agent to find him a new club with Trabzonspor "asking" about the potential of a deal. ‌ And that could alert Martin as he looks to overhaul the squad this summer - who has made no secret of his admiration for Aribo. Speaking during their promotion-winning Championship campaign on midfielder, he said: "He's been a brilliant teammate, an amazing character as you know. He's humble, works hard, smiling. "I've not seen many players or teammates that are as popular as him, even when you're not playing, which is like the biggest credit to him, really." ‌ He has also noted how he fits his footballing philosophy perfectly, stating during his time with the Southampton: 'You trust him to go and put a certain level of performance on the pitch and to want the ball, to run for his teammates. "He's a brilliant teammate and I think he's someone that you trust.' A return would test Aribo's career mantra - having previously insisted he likes to take himself out of his "comfort zone". ‌ After his move away from Glasgow, he said: "I think for me, what's so important is the timing of everything. "I had some offers down south but I chose to go away from home, come out of my comfort zone - which is so important for your own growth personally. "So for me, life is about little steps to get to your goal and that's why I made the choice to go up there. And then why I came back to Southampton." A move back to Ibrox and a Russell Martin reunion could prove tempting - but could Aribo look to test himself elsewhere first? Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, was playing for Morton at the time of his arrest in September last year. He was subsequently sacked by the Championship club. Last month, he pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis between July 1, 2024 and September 2, 2024. He was remanded in custody and was sentenced today. Emmanuel-Thomas has been jailed for four years. Judge Alexander Mills told the striker: "It is through your own actions you will no longer be known as a professional footballer." "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away." London-born Emmanuel-Thomas came through the academy system at Arsenal. He made it all the way to the first team and appeared in the Premier League. After a series of loan spells, Emmanuel-Thomas enjoyed spells with Ipswich, Bristol City and QPR. He had a spell abroad before joining Livingston in 2020. Emmanuel-Thomas, nicknamed JET, impressed and earned a move to Aberdeen. However, he couldn't replicate his success at Pittodrie and left after less than a year. He failed to score a league goal for the Dons. Emmanuel-Thomas returned to Scotland on a short-term deal in July 2024 before being sacked in mid-September after being charged over his role in the drugs plot. The court heard that the drugs were brought into the UK by the striker's girlfriend, Yasmin Piotrowski. She and Rosie Rowland had flown business class to Stansted on September 2. Emmanuel-Thomas was linked to the discovery by WhatsApp messages, voice notes and pictures. The court was told it was "apparent" he had recruited the women, who were cleared after prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. Emmanuel-Thomas had offered the women £2,500 plus a free holiday to Thailand. After Piotrowska was stopped by border officials, Emmanuel-Thomas messaged Rowland to tell her to "delete everything from our chat if you can". The footballer then travelled to East London on September 5 and replaced his mobile phone. He was dismissed by Morton a couple of weeks later when the situation came to light.
