
Baby food and kitchen staples teeming with toxic plastic additives, study warns – even in GLASS jars
COMMON foods have been found to be teeming with concerning levels of toxic plastic additives by scientists - including baby foods and meals in glass jars.
Baby foods like pureed vegetables and fresh meat were among the foods found to contain high quantities of plasticisers - chemicals added to plastics to make them more flexible and easier to handle.

The highest levels were found in microwave-in-a-bag vegetables like broccoli and potatoes.
After just five minutes of cooking, ATBC (a chemical compound used as a plasticiser) in these foods increased 50-fold, according to the new study from experts at the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research in Barcelona, Spain.
Cooking oils were found to contain the least amount of plasticisers, out of the 109 foods studied.
Plasticisers have been linked to a variety of health concerns, including reproductive issues and developmental problems.
In the study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, scientists analysed over 100 foods sold in Spanish supermarkets looking for traces of more than 20 different harmful plastic additives.
The foods were categorised into eight groups - baby foods, condiments, fish products, eggs and dairy, meat, oils, fruit and vegetables and cereals, legumes and sweet products.
Products were tested for chemicals before and after cooking.
Concerning levels of the different plastic additives were detected, including organophosphate esters (OPEs) which were found in 85 per cent of the products.
Studies have shown associations between OPE exposure and impacts on respiratory health, endocrine function, and even potential carcinogenic risks.
High levels of tyltributyl citrates (ATCBs) and DEHAs were also detected - chemicals commonly used in food packaging such as clingfilm to make it bendy.

The highest amounts of OPEs, ATCBs and DEHAs were found in meat and baby food.
Phthalates are a type of plasticiser also used to make plastics more flexible, durable and transparent.
Also classed as a ' forever chemicals ', while some phthalates can be rapidly excreted, many aren't removed from the body quickly, and may persist for longer periods.
Because of this, many food manufacturers have made use of alternative substances to create plastic packaging.
But the scientists behind this new study say the alternatives may carry as many risks.
Co-author Julio Fernández-Arribas said: "The results presented in this study confirm the presence of various types of plasticisers in foodstuffs, and emphasises the potential source of exposure to new alternative plasticisers whose long-term health effects are under scrutiny."

Interestingly, there were significant differences in DEHA and ATBC levels across foods by packaging type.
ATBC was predominantly detected in foods packaged in glass containers, likely due to migration from plasticised coatings in lids.
While DEHA was mainly found in fresh foods wrapped in plastic.
The long-term effects of microplastics on human health are still not fully understood, though emerging research highlights concerns they may accumulate in the body and contribute to various health issues.

What are microplastics and why are they a worry?
Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than five millimetres in diameter.
They come from a variety of sources in our everyday life, from larger pieces of plastic debris, such as from the degradation of bottles, to the tiny beads in personal care products like toothpaste and exfoliants, and synthetic fibres from textiles like polyester and nylon.
We can either ingest them, for example in food and water contaminated with them, or inhale them from the air.
There is growing concern about the potential health impacts of microplastics on both the environment and human health.
When ingested or inhaled, microplastics can cause physical and chemical damage to living organisms.
Studies have shown that they may be involved in inflammation in the body by leading to the release of proteins called inflammatory cytokines.
While these studies are typically small and in animals or cells, inflammation is linked to a range of chronic diseases, including heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
Cellular damage has been a key focus of studies on microplastics.
The tiny pieces of plastic have been shown to cause cell death, cause damage via oxidative stress, and interfere with hormone function.
There is also evidence to suggest that microplastics can cause genotoxic effects, meaning they can damage genetic material within cells - raising fears they can contribute to cancer.
The evidence is still evolving for these tiny particles that are barely visible to the naked eye.

He was not vaccinated - the only possible way to prevent death from infection - following his trip to the country last year, prompting authorities to issue a public warning. Health officials said people should get a rabies vaccination if they are planning to travel or be in close contact with any animals that may be carrying the infection. The man was bitten on his right leg but failed to seek further attention after returning from Ethiopia when he cleaned the wound and finding he had recovered well. Analytical tests conducted in Spain confirmed a rabies positive case on May 29, and medics administered an anti-rabies immunoglobulin as he was admitted to hospital. The immunoglobulin is highly effective at preventing death from rabies, but only if it is administered by doctors soon after the potential infection. The victim's wife, the only contact at risk, was also given the rabies vaccine and immunoglobulin. Marciano Gómez, Spain's minister of health, stressed it was an "isolated" case, adding that rabies had been eradicated in Spain. The country is one of several - including nations like the UK, Japan, New Zealand and Australia - to declare themselves rabies free. Mr Gomez said: "It is transmitted by bites from infected animals in countries where it is not controlled and exceptionally by drops of saliva or a conjunctival ulcer." A teenager has died after inhaling a cleaning product as part of a social media 'dusting' challenge. Renna O'Rourke dreamed of becoming famous and engaged in the deadly dare, sometimes known as 'huffing' or 'chroming', which involves consuming aerosols such as cleaning products. The 19-year-old from Arizona, USA, was taken to intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest and was later declared dead on June 1. Masses of a type of seaweed named sargassum have swamped a broad stretch of coast from Puerto Rico to Guyana, affecting locations across the West Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper, reported that scientists observed a record amount of the troublesome macroalgae in May, but the situation could deteriorate even further this month. The seaweed invasion is reportedly hampering tourism industries in Mexico and Colombia. Meanwhile, anti-seaweed defences have been activated in the Dominican Republic, whilst the popular holiday destination of Barbados faces dips in hotel reservations. Argentina's Infobae has highlighted that this expansive belt of sargassum may extend for hundreds or even thousands of miles. Satellite imagery suggests it's drifting through the Caribbean and potentially heading for the US' southern coastline. Researchers at the University of South Florida's Optical Oceanography Laboratory warned of a whopping 150% increase in Caribbean levels, uncovering a shocking 40 million metric tonnes in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico. It also emits an unpleasant smell (likened to rotten eggs) when it rots, which is reportedly such an issue that it's led to school closures in Martinique. Yet, scientists don't know why the sargassum levels have doubled to these record-breaking levels. However, experts have suggested that changes in rainfall, wind, currents, and warming waters may impact its proliferation. Brian Barnes, an assistant research professor at the University of South Florida, remarked: "The peaks seem to be getting bigger year after year." Yet, the reasons behind this dramatic increase remain a puzzle. He confessed: "It's the million-dollar question. I don't have a satisfactory answer." The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) describes sargassum as a type of large brown seaweed that floats in "island-like" masses. It also has structures known as pneumatocysts. Pneumatocysts, which provide buoyancy and allow the seaweed to float on the sea, look similar to berries and contain gas, primarily oxygen. Sometimes spanning miles, sargassum provides sustenance and breeding grounds for various marine life, including birds, sea turtles, fish, shrimp, and crabs. Some creatures, like the sargassum fish, even spend their entire existence within this floating habitat. Moreover, the NOAA notes that sargassum serves as a nursery for several commercially significant fish species such as amberjacks, mahi mahi, and jacks. Brian conceded that large amounts of seaweed on the open water is conducive with a "healthy and happy ecosystem", but it can also prove to be an issue for ecosystems when it gathers on the shore. He further explained that it can pose a problem for coral reefs, as it obstructs the sunlight they need to survive. Additionally, when it washes up on shore, the creatures living in it either perish or become easy prey for birds.
