Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy discusses Patrick Mahomes' evolution: ‘We can get better'

Kansas City Chiefs OC Matt Nagy discusses Patrick Mahomes' evolution: 'We can get better' The Kansas City Chiefs are focused on bigger plays on offense this season. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy spoke with reporters on Wednesday, reflecting on Patrick Mahomes' evolution since his rookie season. 'There's been a lot. Obviously, the first year that we had him (Patrick Mahomes), it was just getting out of the huddle. You've heard about the calling the plays – all that stuff's easy now.' said Nagy, 'The defenses that we see – I think right now, more than anything, it's us being able to work routes with these wide receivers, these tight ends, these new running backs but for Pat, we always want to pick something that we can get better at and let him really lock in on, whether it's schematically or something that we did last year.' Last season was Mahomes' first as a starter without 4,000 passing yards or a Pro Bowl selection. Nagy believes he will bounce back with more efficiency in 2025. 'I think for us, everyone has numbers and everything of downfield throws and accuracy, inaccuracy, they do it, they don't do it – that's numbers, but the video shows what's going on.' said Nagy, 'We spend an ordinate amount of time breaking that down this offseason and watching it together. For what it's worth, at the end of the Eagles game – I know the score wasn't what we wanted, but there was a pretty good throw at the end of the year there to Xavier (Worthy), and I think that we're excited to get back to some of that.' Mahomes finished 2024 with 3,928 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo says rookie DB 'had a tough day' at OTAs

Kansas City Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo says rookie DB 'had a tough day' at OTAs The Kansas City Chiefs are back at work for OTAs, and rookies continue to integrate into the team's game plans. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke with reporters on Wednesday, revealing a tough outing for rookie defensive back Nohl Williams. "Nohl (Williams) had a tough day today. (It's) Just a couple things that stick out, but what I really like about him is (that) he's a student of football," said Spagnuolo, "You know, coming from Cal – that Cal (team) had really good players on that team, they had a lot of them. I thought, for the most part, when we Zoom called or interviewed guys, I thought they were really sharp football-wise, so it begins there with all the things we do. We'll find out a little bit more about him when we get pads on, and we can go live, but he's done a pretty solid job for us right now." Following a trade with the New England Patriots, the Chiefs selected Williams in the third round with the 85th pick in April's NFL draft. He is expected to be a key contributor in takeaways for Spsgnuolo's defense. After transferring from UNLV in 2023, Williams totaled 53 tackles, six pass deflections, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and two touchdowns. In 2024, Williams' seven interceptions from the previous year at California earned him First-Team All-ACC honors and made him a Consensus All-American.

Dave Toub praises Dustin Colquitt's career with the Chiefs: 'Very talented punter'

Dave Toub praises Dustin Colquitt's career with the Chiefs: 'Very talented punter' During his press conference on Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub praised recently retired punter Dustin Colquitt after signing his one-day contract. "He was a great teammate, probably the biggest practical joker that I've ever seen. " He's just a great person and a very talented punter," said Toub. "To play 15 years in the NFL, or 15 years for one team, is impressive enough. Probably the best inside the 20 punter I've ever had. I've had a lot of good ones over the years, and he just had a special skill at placing that ball inside the 20." For 15 seasons, Colquitt experienced the franchise's highs and lows. Toub detailed the many changes he had to deal with in Kansas City. "He had to hold for nine different kickers in his career." Toub praised his holding on field goals: "He had five different head coaches. It's unbelievable how many people turn over in 15 years." In 238 regular-season games with the Chiefs, Colquitt tallied 1,167 punts and an impressive 477 inside the 20. He won one Super Bowl title with Kansas City in the 2019 season.
