Oh Dear, Wizkids' Baldur's Gate 3 Miniatures Rolled a Natural 1

Oh Dear, Wizkids' Baldur's Gate 3 Miniatures Rolled a Natural 1

Gizmodo15-05-2025

As Larian winds down its extensive post-launch support plans for Baldur's Gate 3, Hasbro has been keen to remind Baldur's Gate 3 fans that they have That Game You Like, Too as often as possible. Karlach and Astarion became the big digital faces of D&D's ambitiously gamified virtual tabletop Project Sigil, before it was effectively scrapped earlier this year. Not to worry though, Wizkids were getting ready to offer a Baldur's Gate 3 experience for the physical tabletop. Things should be good, right?
… right?
Last year Wizkids unveiled a series of pre-painted miniatures inspired by the character designs of Baldur's Gate 3, set to release this year. The 40-miniature-strong collection, alongside a box of just the main characters of the game, was set to bring a veritable host of both named characters and generic minions and creatures from Larian's vision of Faerun to your desk or your next gaming night for everyone who wanted to drag themselves away from their PC or console and imagine if the game behind Baldur's Gate 3 was real. What a concept!
But now those miniatures have started getting in people's hands and, oh no. Alarm was sparked this week by, funnily enough, a Larian employee, when Baldur's Gate 3 senior cinematic artist Elodie Ceselli shared pictures of the horrifying paint applications on the final minis they received.
Shadowheart has seen things not even Shar would have put her through. Withers is more withered than usual. Gale looks like he's about to tell someone they're the most devious bahstard in nyew waterdeep citaaaaaay. Frustrated gamers likewise chimed in Ceselli's thread with their own examples of dodgy paint apps and damaged minis. Not even samples sent out to press are faring better–GamesRadar's gallery of miniature mishaps is just as worthy of a Vicious Mockery or two, as well.
To be fair to Wizkids, mass-marked pre-painted miniatures are not going to exactly be at the standard of seasoned miniature painters. $50 for a box of seven miniatures is a hefty price tag, but experienced hobbyists would know that that kind of money pales in comparison to what someone spending dozens of hours hand-painting their own models might spend in supplies or labor, or what you might pay getting a custom miniature made of your character. But that's a tough argument to make especially when what's getting out to gamers in-hand doesn't even match up with the samples being used to promote these miniatures–which themselves are a significant downgrade from the early renders shown to announce the miniatures last September.
Baldur's Gate 3 is going out on a high note as a video game with its last patch bringing a ton of new subclasses and enhancements, but it seems like Hasbro's own handling of the franchise needed to make some better perception checks so far.

Hasbro's New Marvel Legends Figures Are the Bendiest Boys Around

Whether it's Mr. Fantastic or Shuma-Gorath (sorry, 'Gargantos'), Hasbro's newest Marvel reveals are all about that flexibility. Today Hasbro revealed a boatload of Marvel Legends figures, and they were united beyond the mere fact that they were action figures made by Hasbro, and were from Marvel properties. No, there was a standout theme among today's reveals: bendiness. It would be otherwise difficult to marry the two halves of Hasbro's reveals today—our first official look at action figures from The Fantastic Four: First Steps alongside a series of gaming-themed celebrations of Capcom's classic Marvel fighting games—but somehow the toymaker did it with a little help from Mr. Fantastic and… Shuma-Gorath. Hasbro Marvel Legends Gamerverse Gargantos Sorry, Gargantos. The legally distinct Shuma-Gorath, who looks a lot like Shuma-Gorath, and instead currently borrows its name from an incredibly obscure Namor the Sub-Mariner villainous octopus to avoid potential copyright issues. Either way, they've both got big long bendy limbs! Hasbro Marvel Legends Fantastic Four: First Steps Mr. Fantastic Thankfully, Reed also comes with a pair of normal arms that you can swap out if you don't want his wired, bendable stretchy limbs going all the time. But Gigantos is all bend, all the time, with multiple points of articulation across his six tendrils that make what is otherwise a giant green one-eyed tentacled eldritch abomination surprisingly expressive. Hasbro Marvel Legends Fantastic Four: First Steps Figures Of course though, non-bendy action figures were also on display. Rounding out the rest of the First Steps wave are, of course, the rest of the Fantastic Four, based on their MCU appearances: Sue, Johnny, and Ben all get figures, as does a fully flamed-on Human Torch. While there's no movie Galactus figure for them to battle against yet, the line is rounded out by his herald in the form of Shalla Bal, the Silver Surfer, who comes with not only her cosmic surfboard but a nifty little energy blast stand you can pose her surfing on. Hasbro Marvel Legends Gamerverse Figures The Gamerverse fighting game figures, beyond Gargantos, are all inspired by the early stages of Marvel's historic gaming collaboration with Capcom across a series of arcade fighting games, most notably Marvel Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, and the original Marvel vs. Capcom. Gargantos and a deluxe-sized Juggernaut, however, are the only standalone figures: the rest are available across a series of two packs, some of which will be exclusive in the U.S. to retailers like Walmart, Target. Here's the breakdown of who's facing off against who: Wolverine vs. Silver Samurai Psylocke vs. Thanos (Target exclusive) Captain America vs. Venom War Machine vs. Omega Red (Walmart exclusive) Hasbro's Fantastic Four: First Steps figures will hit Hasbro Pulse for pre-order tomorrow, May 30, ahead of a release this summer. The 'Gamerverse' two-packs will have staggered pre-order launches across Hasbro Pulse, Target, and Walmart across the month of June.

Streaming Wars Heat Up: How Moonvalley's $123M AI Bet Could Shape Hollywood's Future

Toronto startup Moonvalley is having no trouble raising additional capital since securing a $70 million seed round in November. The developer of AI tools for video creation has added another $53 million to its checkbook, according to last week's Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Fourteen unnamed investors have now come on board, with potentially good reasons for their anonymity. The company has opened operations in Los Angeles, tracking an eyebrow-raising game plan in this overcrowded tech venue. Don't Miss: Hasbro, MGM, and Skechers trust this AI marketing firm — 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. Moonvalley is building the Marey AI learning model in collaboration with animator Asteria, operating out of the Mack Sennett soundstage. According to a press release, Marey will bring "unparalleled power and control to film and media production, while distinguishing itself by relying exclusively on ethically sourced data owned and licensed by the company." Given proximity to Hollywood studios, unnamed investors may include major industry players making plans for the future. Content creators have been taking aggressive action against video AI startups that train models on public data, arguing fair-use violations of their copyrighted materials. Moonvalley hopes to jump legal hurdles by obtaining licensing and purchasing agreements prior to use. Videos will then be packaged into datasets and fed into Marey while clients retain authority to delete their data or request removal. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Moonvalley still has to tread lightly. Hollywood's Animation Guild represents top-tier creators, animators and cartoonists. The union commissioned a study in 2024 that predicts disruption to more than 100,000 U.S.-based film, television and animation jobs within two years. Following the study's release, the union signed a three-year contract that expires at the end of 2027, setting the stage for a showdown that rivals last year's Hollywood strike. Of course, AI has already infiltrated the entertainment industry, led by widespread use of computer graphics in action films in the 1990s. However, the tech may also revive careers of dead actors. Imagine "Gone Again With the Wind", featuring a robust Clark Gable galloping past a perfectly rendered Charleston, South Carolina in ruins. It's the kind of pipe dream that thrills Hollywood producers while nervous actors call their Marey interface is still under construction and not available for public scrutiny. The company said the software will feature storyboarding and granular clip adjustment tools, generating videos from text prompts, sketches, photos, video clips and other media. Initial HD rendering is expected to produce clips up to 30 seconds long, which doesn't sound impressive. However, string them together and a fully-fledged cinema experience might emerge. Given industry crosswinds, Moonvalley faces an uncertain path from build out to full-scale production. From a profit perspective, future investors should remain cautious because the ethical approach will be duplicated by competitors if it gains traction in Hollywood, undermining the start-up's competitive edge. That's one reason the growing list of unnamed investors is critical to this venture's long-term success, especially if they're bankrolled by Hollywood or Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). Elon Musk Was Reportedly Accused By Britney Spears' Sister of Making Teslas Too Quiet For Her Pets to Hear — 'You Owe Me a Couple Cats'

Jamie Lynn Spears had the internet in a chokehold for a hot minute—and not for her acting or singing. The "Zoey 101" alum and Britney Spears' little sister raised eyebrows in 2021 when she reportedly accused Elon Musk of manufacturing cars too stealthy for her pets to survive. In a now-deleted Instagram video preserved by TMZ, Jamie Lynn claimed Tesla vehicles were essentially silent assassins. "We have now lost — I don't want to tell you how many cats — because they don't hear the Tesla crank and unfortunate things happen," she said. One unfortunate victim was a cat named Turkey, reportedly backed over in her driveway. Don't Miss: Hasbro, MGM, and Skechers trust this AI marketing firm — 'Scrolling To UBI' — Deloitte's #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones. At one point, she directly addressed Tesla's CEO: "Elon Musk, let's figure this out. You owe me a couple cats." She even proposed a solution: make Teslas emit annoying noises that specifically bother animals so they move out of the way. And here's the twist—federal law already requires that. Since September 2020, all electric vehicles in the U.S. must emit at least 43 decibels of sound at low speeds to warn pedestrians. That rule, though, was designed with human safety in mind—particularly for the visually impaired—not necessarily curious backyard cats. After her comments gained traction and a fair share of internet ridicule, Jamie Lynn walked things back in a follow-up post—also deleted. She clarified that she hadn't run over any cats, Tesla wasn't really to blame, and admitted that "user error is admittedly involved." Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — According to a 2024 study by LendingTree, Tesla drivers were involved in more accidents than drivers of any other brand—26.67 accidents per 1,000 drivers, up from 23.54 the year before. Some of those crashes involved the company's self-driving features, which have faced multiple federal investigations. Ram and Subaru followed closely behind in the rankings, but Tesla once again topped the list for the most accident-prone drivers. So when Jamie Lynn later walked back her comments—clarifying that Tesla wasn't really to blame and admitting that "user error" is likely at fault—she may have unintentionally echoed what data is now confirming: sometimes the car's not the problem, but how people are using be fair, her original rant didn't seem malicious—more like a frazzled pet owner venting grief. But the internet is quick, and vague fingers pointed at Elon Musk don't go unnoticed. Tesla, for its part, didn't comment on the matter. It was a moment of viral chaos that got people talking—about pet safety, EV sound regulations, and the hazards of airing personal pet tragedies online. As for Jamie Lynn? Lesson learned: think twice before dragging billionaires into your backyard drama. Especially when the receipts are, well, deleted.
