BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — As the school year wraps up, West Virginia University President-elect Michael Benson is getting ready to step into the limelight.
Benson, who was previously the President of Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, will begin his term in July of this year.
12 News got to speak with Benson for the first time moments before the start of the 2025 West Virginia Business Roundtable, where he was one of multiple university presidents representing their respective schools.
Benson said he and his family are excited to be becoming Mountaineers. 'It's a wonderful community, people have been incredibly warm and welcoming and we look forward to getting to work and making a difference.'
As for his plans for the university, especially after it has suffered financially in recent years, Benson said that plans will be announced soon.

'I'm a big believer that plans are important, but the planning process is even more important. So we're in that process right now, and we're going to roll out some ideas about the direction moving forward, but there's a lot to be excited about. There are a lot of blue sky opportunities ahead for the university,' Benson said.
Benson said the way he's been acclimating himself to his new school has been by getting to know people and different communities around the area.
'I think the most important thing I can do as president is get to know people, relationships are key, and I want to know what's important to them and what's important to the university and see if we can get the two to come together,' Benson said.

Restaurant Road Trip: Bacon, Bourbon & Beer

MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — It says it all right in the name — if you're looking for a juicy burger to sink your teeth into or a local beer to enjoy, Bacon, Bourbon & Beer, in Morgantown deserves your attention. Located in the Suncrest Town Centre, this gastropub offers a robust selection of shareable items, sandwiches, salads and burgers. Its signature item is a one-pound bacon flight with Cajun & Bleu, Candied Jalapeno & Cheddar, Bourbon & Brown Sugar and Sarris Chocolate Drizzle bacon. Restaurant owner Shawn Janovich said he has a soft (or crispy) spot for bacon and used to eat it just about every week. 'I love bacon. It was part of a house I lived in outside of D.C. where we all cooked about a pound of bacon every Saturday morning and just sat around and ate bacon for a long period of time,' Janovich said. Restaurant Road Trip: Joan + Joe Coffee Following his love of bacon, Janovich said he was intrigued by beer during the pre-2020 craft beer boom and wanted to incorporate that into his business. Bourbon, which starts with the letter B and also happens to be a craft beverage, naturally became the third pillar he wanted to build off of. But there's actually a secret fourth B that Bacon, Bourbon & Beer has come to be known for. 'We're most known for our burgers,' Janovich told 12 News. 'We sell more burgers than anything through both locations.' Reporter Sam Gorski got to try the B3 smash burger, and it's easy to see why it's one of the restaurant's most popular items. It tastes exactly how it looks: juicy, flavorful and loaded with thick-cut bacon and tender onions, with a B3 burger sauce to tie it all together. If you like a good burger, you'll like this one too. If you're looking for a drink to pair with your order, you won't be short on choices either, with more than 100 varieties of bourbon and 20 different craft and domestic beers on tap to choose from. If you find yourself in Morgantown and you like bacon, bourbon, beer or burgers, it's certainly worth a visit. Smiley: Providence in ‘very preliminary' talks with Matunuck Oyster Bar

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — If there's a way for Providence to help a beloved Rhode Island oyster bar, Mayor Brett Smiley said the city stands ready to do so. In the wake of a devastating fire at Matunuck Oyster Bar in South Kingstown last month, several fundraisers have been launched and community members have been offering help to the iconic restaurant. RELATED: Rhode Islanders distraught by fire at beloved oyster bar Smiley said the city has had 'some original conversations' with the bar's owner, but they were 'very preliminary.' 'I reached out immediately to the business owner, who I know, and told them if there was a way that Providence could play a role in either a short-term or a long-term solution to the tragedy, that we wanted to do so,' Smiley told 12 News on Monday. 'Most importantly, there's 300 people who work at the oyster bar who don't have jobs right now, and we want to make sure that they find work and that that treasured Rhode Island institution finds a home and can reopen as soon as possible.' Earlier on Monday, The Boston Globe reported that the city's discussions included proposing that the bar open temporarily in Waterplace Park, where Skyline at Waterplace used to be. Skyline at Waterplace had been embroiled in a legal battle with the city since April 2023 when its owners were accused of violating their lease agreement by not keeping the property in good condition. The city's parks department took over management of the building after the city settled with the former owner to evict them. The city finalized that settlement in October. Documents show the city agreed to pay nearly $278,000. In recent months, the city has been showing off the vacant space to interested parties, according to Smiley, who said the city still plans to issue a request for proposal (RFP) sometime this year. 'We're trying to gather feedback from prospective users about what the best use of that facility is,' Smiley added. 'They need us': Fundraisers launched for Matunuck Oyster Bar There are efforts underway to get the oyster bar up and running closer to home. Last Friday, state Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee and Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski introduced legislation that would allow the restaurant to set up outdoor seating in the parking lot across the street. Hagan McEntee's bill is set to be reviewed by the House Committee on Small Business on Tuesday. Sosnowski's companion legislation will also be discussed Tuesday in the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government.
