
Oman expands telecom services with new satellite license for OmanSat
Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik promulgated Royal Decree 40/2025, issuing a Category 1 license for the Satellite Communications Technologies Company to establish and operate a satellite communications system to provide fixed public communication services.
Under the license, the licensed company (OmanSat) will establish and operate satellite communication systems to provide fixed public communication services in the Sultanate of Oman, which include broadband Internet services, satellite connectivity services for communication stations, and provide multiple options for beneficiaries in rural areas, according to TRA.
"This comes within the efforts of the TRA to enable investment in innovative technologies and services, ensure the existence of an accessible and secure infrastructure, and develop a flexible regulatory environment that keeps pace with developments," the statement said.
The licensing will enable the company to contribute to the development of the telecommunications infrastructure and increase competitiveness in the local market.

Over 400 firms penalised in Oman for hidden trade
Muscat - The National Team for Combating Illicit Trade (NTT) has conducted audits of 581 commercial companies in three main governorates: Muscat, Dhofar, and North Al Batinah as part of the ongoing efforts to combat hidden trade and enhance the business environment. These efforts resulted in the issuance of administrative penalties to 410 violating establishments. Meanwhile, 77 companies complied with the audit requirements by submitting the necessary documents, such as bank statements and lease contracts, bringing the response rate to 13.2 percent. These governorates were selected based on the high density of commercial records. Muscat Governorate has 20,244, North Al Batinah 16,094, and Dhofar 16,094. She explained that the number of activities subject to monitoring reached 106, including those prohibited to foreign investment (except 20 activities), in addition to some service activities such as dental clinics and pharmacies, provided that the company has been established for five years. Activities exempted from the ban include sectors such as tailoring, vehicle repair, hairdressing, laundry, flower sales, and pet care services. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MOCIIP) has urged all institutions and commercial companies to open a bank account in one of the licensed banks in the Sultanate of Oman. This is mandatory as per the Commercial Companies Law issued by Royal Decree 18/2019 and its executive regulations issued by Ministerial Decision 146/2021 and Ministerial Decision 412/2023 regarding combating hidden trade. OER Business Summit explores the roadmap to achieving the Sultanate's medium to long term economic and HR goals
The 16th Edition of OER Business Summit, a flagship event by the Sultanate's premium business magazine, with a special HR focus, was held at Sheraton Oman on April 30. His Highness Sayyid Mohammed bin Thuwaini Al Said was the Chief Guest at the Summit. Held under the auspices of His Excellency Shaikh Salim bin Mustahail Al Mashani and organised by UMS Events, the Summit explored the roadmap to achieving the Sultanate's medium to long term economic and HR goals in-line with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's Vision. Under His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's Visionary Leadership, Oman has taken remarkable strides in economic development, social betterment and robust bilateral ties. The country has also been instrumental in addressing structural challenges, fostering fiscal responsibility and setting the stage for a more diversified and resilient economy. According to the National Center for Statistical Information (NCSI) Oman's GDP growth is expected to be 1.9 per cent at constant prices by the end of Q3 2024. Further, the preliminary results of 2024 show an increase in total revenue that led to a surplus than the deficit that was estimated in the 2024 budget. Total revenue for 2024 is projected to reach RO12.67bn and increase of 15.1 per cent compared with the budgeted figure of RO11.01bn. (up by 15.1 per cent). Overall, the budget is expected to generate a surplus of RO0.54bn compared with the 2024 budget deficit of RO0.64bn. Oman, Russia take steps to enhance economic cooperation.
Muscat: Oman and the Russian Federation have taken significant strides toward strengthening economic cooperation through the signing of several agreements, memorandums of understanding, and cooperation protocols across various fields. These developments occurred during the state visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Russia on April 21 and 22. The visit witnessed the signing of agreements, including an economic and technical cooperation protocol, a mutual visa exemption agreement, a project to establish a joint economic committee, and memorandums of understanding in areas such as transport and transit, combating money laundering and terrorism financing, fisheries cooperation, and enhancing institutional frameworks to provide platforms for the private sector to capitalize on investment opportunities in both countries. His Excellency Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion, emphasised the importance of building on the shared historical legacy between Oman and Russia by translating the directives of His Majesty into advanced economic, trade, and investment partnerships based on mutual interests and Oman Vision 2040. He stated that the visit culminated in continuous efforts at both governmental and private sector levels, highlighting the exemplary bilateral relations between Oman and Russia. These relations aim to enhance economic integration, develop supply chains, and explore new areas of cooperation, such as digital transformation and the green economy, in line with the sustainable development aspirations of both nations. His Excellency reaffirmed Oman's commitment to creating an attractive and secure investment environment that supports entrepreneurship, promotes trade exchange, and achieves balanced economic development. He expressed confidence that His Majesty's state visit to Russia marks the beginning of a new phase of close cooperation, enhancing Oman's position as a promising investment destination and a reliable international partner. Faisal bin Abdullah Al Rawas, Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the memorandum of understanding signed between the Chamber and the Russian Roscongress Foundation during His Majesty's visit. This memorandum represents a significant step toward strengthening trade relations between the public and private sectors of both countries, expanding the scope of partnership, and opening new horizons for trade and investment cooperation. He noted that the memorandum provides a valuable opportunity for exchanging expertise and organizing joint activities, thereby enhancing trade relations, attracting mutual investments, and accelerating economic cooperation. It also lays the foundation for a new phase of economic partnerships based on mutual interests, fostering collaboration in various fields, including trade exchange, knowledge sharing, and joint investment projects. Regarding the mutual visa exemption agreement, Haitham bin Mohammed Al Ghassani, Director General of Tourism Promotion at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, stated that the agreement would boost the tourism sector between the two countries. He noted that the Ministry has contracted a tourism representation office in the Russian market, which has begun its promotional plan for Oman and engaged with Russian tourism companies. He added that the agreement would increase tourist flow from Russia to Oman, allowing Russian tourists longer stays and greater flexibility in planning their visits without the need for visas.
