Olivier Awards: US actor says 'special relationship firmly intact' despite Trump's tariffs
British star Lesley Manville and American actor John Lithgow have won the acting categories at this year's Olivier Awards, which recognise excellence in London theatre.
Lithgow, 79, played Roald Dahl in Giant, which is about the children's author wondering whether to make a public apology.
While accepting his award he appeared to reference the current controversy over Donald Trump's second term as US president.
The Conclave star quipped: "It's not always easy to welcome an American into your midst, and at this particular moment, it's probably a little more complicated than usual."
He also told the audience at the Royal Albert Hall that the "special relationship is still firmly intact", despite Mr Trump imposing tariffs on British exports to the US.
His co-star, English actor Elliot Levey, took best actor in a supporting role.
Giant was also named best new play.
Manville, 69, was honoured for her performance in the Greek tragedy Oedipus at the Wyndham's Theatre.
She said she felt "emotional" while accepting her statuette because it was a production she had "felt very strongly about being" in.
Manville, who played Princess Margaret in The Crown, added that she was taking an early flight to Dublin on Monday to do some filming, and would not be getting "much sleep tonight".
Best actress in a supporting role went to Romola Garai for her performance in The Years, based on a memoir by French writer Annie Ernaux.
Garai, whose film credits include Scoop and Atonement, was nominated in the same category for Giant.
Dame Imelda Staunton won a fifth Olivier, for best actress in a musical for the London revival of classic musical Hello, Dolly!
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button won best new musical, a best actor musical award for Lark Rise To Candleford actor John Dagleish, and the outstanding musical contribution award.

As a second said: " #ginnyandgeorgiaS3 know they wrong for having this 14 year old boy play his 9 year old character. They let too much time pass in between filming and it's p***ing me off." "It's so ridiculous cause austin being so young made georgia's reckless choices hit harder. Now he looks the same age ginny's supposed to be playing and it just doesn't give the same effect," a fan pointed out. As a fourth added: "Netflix should stop taking 2+ years between seasons because wdym these two scenes are supposed to be only a few months apart? #ginnyandgeorgia." Diesel took to his own TikTok page back in May and shared a video of himself which he captioned: "My tryna convince people that Austin is still 9." The Australian-American actor has acted in several roles already despite just being in his teens which include in The Secrets She Keeps, Lambs of God, La Brea and Little Monsters. Actress Antonia Gentry who plays the main character of Ginny commented on how quickly the actor who plays her little brother has grown up. When season 3 filming began in 2024 she shared a side-by-side photo of herself and Diesel after filming season 1 compared with now which showed how much he had grown. He was originally much shorter than the actress and now he towers above her. Ginny and Georgia first arrived on Netflix back in 2021 and quickly became a fan-loves show. It is now in its third series and has got even more dramatic than before. Series two left off with a murder which mum-of-two Georgia is now being accused of, despite it actually being her son who committed the crime.

Stephen Graham had emergency operation on a plane to the US
Stephen Graham may be known for his intense on-screen performances, but his recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers showcased a very different side of the acclaimed British actor. A story the Adolescence star, 51, told on the show has gone viral online for good reason: It involves mid-air panic, unexpected medical heroics, and the actor 'dropping his kecks.' Prompted by Meyers' question about a particularly eventful journey to the United States, the A Thousand Blows star chuckled and admitted it had been 'a hell of an experience.' 'I'm of a certain age now,' Graham began. 'You know, once you hit 45, the trips to the loo start to rack up.' That complaint led the actor to seek a medical solution months prior – a non-invasive procedure designed to reduce frequent urination by slightly enlarging the prostate, often aided by a catheter. For a while, everything had been fine. That is, until Graham found himself at 10,000 feet and suddenly unable to urinate. 'It just didn't feel right,' he recalled. He returned to his seat and downed more water, hoping it would work itself out. But the next time he visited the toilet, things took a frightening turn. 'Long story short, I went, but it was just pure blood,' he said. 'It was very scary. I couldn't stop this trajectory of blood and I'm having a slight panic attack. I'm about to cry and I'm having a moment,' Graham added. Earlier that day, Graham had posed for a selfie at the gate with a fan, who, as luck would have it, was a doctor. Even better? The doctor's travel companion was a surgeon. Once the severity of Graham's situation became clear, the cabin crew sprang into action. 'Next minute, the doctor comes around the corner and goes, 'Stephen!' and I'm like, 'Doc! Hello!'' What happened next could rival the drama of any Graham-led series. The space between economy and first class was hastily converted into an operating bay. Curtains were drawn, medical kits opened, and the lounge area sterilized.
