SEC updates US court on efforts to serve legal documents in Adani case
The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a status update with a federal court in New York, detailing its ongoing efforts to serve legal documents to billionaire Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar in connection with a civil securities case filed last year.
In a June 27 letter submitted to Magistrate Judge James R Cho of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York (EDNY), the SEC said it is continuing to pursue formal service of the summons and complaint under the provisions of the Hague Service Convention.
The defendants, who are based in India, are yet to be officially served.
US SEC has to serve the summons to Adani Group founder and chairman Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar in the alleged USD 265 million payoffs to win lucrative renewable power supply contracts, through proper diplomatic channels as it has no jurisdiction to summon a foreign national directly.
The SEC originally filed the complaint on November 20, 2024, alleging that two violated US securities laws by making false and misleading statements related to a September 2021 bond offering by Adani Green Energy Ltd.
According to the SEC, Rule 4 (f) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure governs service in foreign jurisdictions and permits the use of international treaties, such as the Hague Convention. The rule does not impose a specific time limit for service, provided reasonable efforts are being made

Under the 2017 deal, Adani Power's Godda power plant in Jharkhand was to supply 100 per cent of the electricity generated from burning coal, to Bangladesh for a period of 25 years. After payment defaults, Adani had cut supplies by half in November 2024. It restored full electricity supply, which is around 1,600 MW, in March after the country reduced liabilities. Bangladesh stepped up repayments from July last year, clearing monthly dues. This came after the country suffered from increased power shortages in rural areas. Bangladesh has been struggling to generate sufficient dollar revenues to cover the cost of essential imports such as electricity, coal, and oil. Its foreign currency reserves declined amid months of student-led protests and political unrest, which culminated in the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government in August 2024. The interim government that succeeded her sought an additional USD 3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on top of the existing USD 4.7 billion bailout package. Adani's power deal with Bangladesh was one of the many under Sheikh Hasina, which the current interim government has called opaque. Tributes paid to former PM P V Narasimha Rao
Hyderabad, June 28 (UNI) Telangana Employment and Labour Minister G. Vivek Venkata Swamy on Saturday hailed former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna recipient PV Narasimha Rao as a visionary leader who guided India through challenging times and laid the groundwork for the nation's economic transformation. The birth anniversary of the late Prime Minister was commemorated at PV Ghat on Necklace Road, where PVNR's family members, Minister Vivek, Forest and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha, and others paid floral tributes. Speaking at the event, Minister Vivek lauded Rao for initiating historic economic reforms that positioned India as a rising global economy. He recalled how PVNR allocated Rs 400 crore to rescue Singareni Collieries and sanctioned Rs 5,000 crore for poverty alleviation, reflecting his commitment to the welfare of the poor.
