CCK, Bukit Gombak residents try firefighting, first aid to enhance resilience during emergencies

SINGAPORE – As residents living near community sports facility The Arena @ Keat Hong were heading to breakfast or their Sunday grocery shopping on May 25, a 'scuffle' broke out between two men.
The altercation left one person with an injured arm, while the other started to go into cardiac arrest.
But before the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the police could arrive on the scene, two civilian responders from the People's Association Community Emergency Response Team (PA CERT ) swooped in to help after spotting the commotion.
One of the PA CERT responders provided first aid to the man with the injured arm, while the other performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the other party. Another two civilian responders, who were alerted to the incident via SCDF's myResponder app, located the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED) and applied it to the man.
The incident was part of a simulation at Chua Chu Kang GRC and Bukit Gombak SMC's Community Resilience Day event on May 25 that showed how civilians can work together with uniformed personnel in responding to emergencies.
PA CERT members are trained in performing CPR and using AEDs. Formed in 2004, PA CERT is a group of volunteers under the PA Community Emergency and Engagement Committees that seeks to raise crisis preparedness in the community, respond to emergencies and help the community in the recovery process.
Looking out for one another and being vigilant is a responsibility that must be shared by everyone in the community, said Minister for Manpower Tan See Leng at the event.

Dr Tan was joined by other Chua Chu Kang GRC MPs, which includes Acting Minister for Transport Jeffrey Siow and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Social and Family Development Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim – both newly minted political office-holders – and Dr Choo Pei Ling.
'Anytime someone collapses, whether it's because of a cardiac arrest, because of a stroke, the brain needs oxygen, and you only have about four minutes to respond before the brain suffers damage because of the lack of oxygen,' said Dr Tan.
Making reference to the simulation, he added: 'As you can see from our first responders, how they very quickly assess the person who is lying down, and they started CPR almost immediately, that is crucial, because then it ensures that the blood continues to be pumped to the brain.'

At the event, some 1,500 residents not only tried performing basic first aid and CPR, but also experienced putting out a fire at a booth at The Arena by the SCDF that drew a long queue of enthusiastic children.
Another favourite was a booth by the Republic of Singapore Air Force that featured interactive simulators.
Mr Leow Foo Kay, 51, said he took his seven-year-old son, who dreams of being a pilot, to the event to show him different ways of contributing to the community.
'I hope that events like these will inspire him to pick up lifesaving skills to help others in the future,' said Mr Leow, who works in finance.

Bargain hunters lift Bursa at open, shrugging off Wall Street jitters
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 — Bursa Malaysia opened higher today on mild bargain hunting amid the mixed overnight performance on Wall Street, analysts said. At 9.05am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) was 1.50 points firmer at 1,509.47, compared with Wednesday's close of 1,507.97. The benchmark index opened 2.73 points higher at 1,510.70. Back home, Thong said the FBM KLCI on Wednesday finally reversed its recent downtrend to close in positive territory, attributed to last-minute bargain hunting. Overall, he noted that trading activities remained muted, as indicated by the low daily volume of 2.4 billion shares. 'We noticed there has been a spate of downgrades on the FBM KLCI target this year, given the prevailing trade uncertainty. 'Nonetheless, we envisage bargain-hunting activities to prevail, hence, expect the index to trend within the 1,505-1,515 range today,' Thong told Bernama. Among the heavyweights, Press Metal Aluminium added 10 sen to RM5.00, MR DIY rose 3.0 sen to RM1.58, YTL Power International increased 5.0 sen to RM3.34, Nestle bagged 64 sen to RM79.00, and Sime Darby ticked up 1.0 sen to RM1.71. ‘We don't want them': Trump signs travel ban on 12 countries after Colorado attack
WASHINGTON, June 5 — US President Donald Trump signed a new travel ban Wednesday targeting 12 countries, saying it was spurred by an attack on a Jewish protest in Colorado that authorities blamed on a man they said was in the country illegally. The ban, which strongly resembles a similar measure taken in his first presidency, targets nationals of Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. It will go into effect on June 9, the White House said. Trump also imposed a partial ban on travelers from seven countries: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela, the White House said. 'The recent terror attack in Boulder, Colorado has underscored the extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted,' Trump said in a video message from the Oval Office posted on X. 'We don't want them.' Trump compared the new measures to the 'powerful' ban he imposed on a number of mainly Muslim countries in his first term, which he said had stopped the United States suffering attacks that happened in Europe. Furious Aussie boxing legend Jeff Fenech storms out of his house in his underwear and tells his wife to call the cops
A group of local pranksters almost got more than they bargained for after targeting Australian boxing icon Jeff Fenech by staging a fake auction outside his Sydney home. The practical jokers, led by The Block winner Ozman 'Oz' Abu Malik and former boxer Billy Dib, arrived at Fenech's home with an auctioneer and a group of actors posing as buyers in tow. The crew set up realty signs on the lawn before the auction got underway. Malik and Dib watched with glee from a car as 61-year-old Fenech stormed out of his home in his undies to confront the hired auctioneer on his own front lawn. 'Why did you come to my house for?' demanded Fenech as he started dismantling the signage. 'F**k it off. The boxing legend threw auction signs as he demanded to know what was going on 'Don't make me do something bad... How is my my house for sale?' The auctioneer replied: 'Sir, I have been given instructions.' Fenech then ripped a document from the auctioneer's hand in anger. 'Well you've been given the wrong instructions!' The four-time world champion then told his daughter Kayla to ring the police. 'How's my house for sale? How's my house for sale?' yelled a bewildered Fenech. 'Don't you think I'd know if my house was for sale?' Moments later Fenech took his threats up a notch. '... I know you're videoing me, but in a minute you'll be having a little rest,' said Fenech. Fenech eventually pushed the auctioneer off his property and onto the road The auction continued with the bidding. 'Four's the bid. Four five. Here it goes,' yelled the auctioneer. 'Five million's the bid...' An increasingly agitated Fenech paced around. 'It's worth over nine million,' he interjected. The auctioneer grew louder as fake bidders pushed the price up above six million. 'Six point five once! Six point five twice!' he yelled. Fenech snapped and grabbed the auctioneer and started pushing him onto the road. Dib then rushed out of the car to let Fenech know it was a prank, giving his friend a bear hug as the actors and crew clapped. Moments later Fenech had calmed down and was even smiling about the elaborate stitch-up. 'He got me well,' admitted Fenech. Dib explained that Fenech had always been a part of his boxing career. 'We've had an amazing journey together,' he said. 'He's pranked so many people along the way, and today he finally got pranked.' Fenech replied to Dib 'the pranker gets pranked'.
