Chinese tourist drowns during Sipadan dive, wife witnesses tragedy
SEMPORNA: A 37-year-old Chinese tourist is believed to have drowned while diving in the waters off Sipadan Island here yesterday.
District police chief Superintendent Mohd Sabri Zainol said they were alerted to the incident after a report was lodged at 6.45pm.
"The complainant, a diving instructor, along with four other dive guides, had brought eight divers from various countries to Sipadan Island for a diving activity.
"At around 10.45am, the male Chinese tourist entered the sea without the instructor's permission and immediately sank," he said in a statement.
Mohd Sabri added that the boatman alerted the instructor upon realising what had happened.
One of the dive guides searched for the victim and found him unconscious at an estimated depth of 25 metres.
The victim was brought back to the boat and attempts were made to resuscitate him using first aid.
He showed some response by taking a deep breath and vomiting, but remained unconscious.
"The victim was then taken to Semporna Hospital for further treatment before being transferred to Tawau Hospital.
"He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Tawau Hospital."
The police have opened an investigation paper and classified the case as a sudden death.
A post-mortem examination will be conducted at 2pm today at Tawau Hospital.
The victim had come to Sipadan Island to dive with his wife, who was also on the boat during the incident.
Police urge anyone with relevant information to contact investigating officer Assistant Superintendent Mohammad Ali Amat at 013-2120852, or to provide information at any nearby police station or district police headquarters.

The production of pornographic images or materials carries a prison term of from 1 month to 1 year and a fine of 100,000 (US$25) to 2,000,000 riels (US$500). Sisters' Aidiladha shopping trip derailed by expired road tax

Four charged over suspected involvement in ‘blessing' scams
A gold necklace, S$1,311 in cash and 10,050 yuan (S$1,800) were seized. - SINGAPORE POLICE FORCE SINGAPORE: Three women and a man have been charged in court over allegedly cheating victims of cash and gold in 'blessing' scams. Chinese nationals Zhong Weifeng, 58, Huang Ximing, 61, Huang Meiling, 56, and Huang Qinyan, 47, were charged with conspiracy to cheat on Friday (June 6). On June 2, Zhong and Huang Meiling approached one of the victims and led her to Huang Qinyan, who claimed to be a Chinese physician. The victim was told she was experiencing misfortune due to 'negative spiritual elements', the police said on June 6. To ward off misfortune, the woman was said to have handed $700 in cash and a gold necklace to Huang Qinyan, who placed the items in a plastic bag. Huang Qinyan performed a 'cleansing ritual' on the valuables, and the victim was told to keep the plastic bag, untouched, under her bed for a month. The woman checked the bag the next day and found that her valuables had been replaced with leaves. On June 4, the police received a report of another scam with a similar modus operandi.
