College Senior Missed Graduating with His Friends So Hospital Threw Him Impromptu Ceremony Instead

20-year-old Brady Larson had to miss his college graduation while he's being treated at the Mayo Clinic That same day, hospital staffers decided to throw him an impromptu graduation celebration in a hospital hallway Larson earned a degree in agricultural business from South Dakota's Mitchell Institute of TechnologyMedical staff rallied to surprise a college senior after he was forced to miss his graduation from South Dakota's Mitchell Institute of Technology. At the time of his graduation last month, Brady Larson, a 20-year-old patient at the Mayo Clinic, was preparing to undergo a stem cell transplant from his 15-year-old sister, Brooklyn, to treat his severe aplastic anemia. Since he had to miss the actual ceremony, hospital staffers in Minnesota decided to organize an impromptu graduation ceremony for the same day, standing shoulder-to-shoulder in a hallway and cheering for Larson. The graduate wore a white lab coat over his grey college sweatshirt and carried a sparkly decorative 2025 graduation cap complete with a gold streamer for a tassel as 'Pomp and Circumstance' played. Afterward, everyone enjoyed cupcakes with green frosting in a nod to Larson's school color. Emmy-nominated film about sugarcane burning to be shown May 31 at West Palm library

A special screening of an Emmy-nominated film, "Bittersweet Muck," about sugarcane burning in the Glades will be shown May 31 at the Mandel Library in West Palm Beach. NBC 6 consumer investigative reporter Sasha Jones produced the film, seeking to continue the conversation around cane burning, according to her Facebook page. The documentary paints a portrait of impoverished small towns around Lake Okeechobee whose residents of color endure as many as eight months of burning every year. The Palm Beach Post in 2022 was a Pulitzer finalist along with its partner ProPublica for their investigative series, Black Snow, on the harmful health effects of the burning on residents of Belle Glade, Pahokee and other small cities in the Glades. They call the ash that rains down on their families and their property each year "black snow." In a practice banned by other countries that grow sugarcane, powerful companies burn the stalks of the leafy plants before harvest. Mothers and schools keep children indoors. Nebulizers, machines that ease breathing, are often in use. Inhalers are so intertwined with childhood that they come in toy-like cartoon-character dispensers. The big sugar companies, headquartered in one of the largest sugarcane growing areas of the country, say the air quality in the Glades has some of the cleanest air in Florida. The screening begins at 2 p.m. with a Q&A afterward including panelists Jones, Colin Walkes, former mayor of Pahokee; Dr. Ankush K. Bansal, president, Physicians for Social Responsibility Florida; and attorney Patrick Ferguson, senior organizing representative of Sierra Club Florida. This Palm Beach County beach tops Florida's 10Best list again

DELRAY BEACH — Delray Beach has long billed itself as "The Village by the Sea." Now, for the second consecutive year, it has the ranking to match. USA TODAY has named it the No. 1 beach in Florida on its annual "10Best" list. The coastal South Florida city is known for its lively downtown and award-winning beaches. Residents say it blends small-town charm with big-city energy, and it features a mix of art galleries, boutique shops, waterfront dining and cultural festivals. Its pristine shoreline and walkable Atlantic Avenue make it a favorite for both locals and tourists looking to soak up the sun or enjoy a night out. USA Today's "10Best" awards spotlight the best of the best in categories like travel destinations, food and drink, hotels and attractions. A panel of travel experts submits the initial nominees, which are then narrowed down by the "10Best" editorial team. The final winners are chosen by readers through online voting. According to the city, about 3.2 million visitors come to Delray Beach each year. The city boasts a 2-mile stretch along the southern shoreline of Palm Beach County. Its No. 1 beach ranking isn't all the honors it has received. In April, Delray Beach gained international recognition, earning the prestigious Blue Flag designation for the third consecutive year. It's a national award given to beaches that meet a set of criteria ranging from safety to environmental standards. An international jury selects winners. Clearwater Beach (Clearwater, Florida). Treasure Island Beach (Treasure Island, Florida). Lauderdale-By-The-Sea (Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Florida). Stuart Beach (Stuart, Florida). Bowman's Beach (Sanibel, Florida). St. Pete Beach (St. Pete Beach, Florida). Siesta Beach (Sarasota, Florida). Destin (Destin, Florida). Anastasia State Park (St. Augustine, Florida). The full list of winners can be found here.
