Prolific thief returns to jail after stealing biscuits from Mansfield shop

Yahoo3 days ago

A prolific Nottinghamshire thief has been returned to prison after he stole multiple items, including biscuits, from a shop he was banned from. John Evans, 34 and of Babworth Court, Mansfield, entered a convenience store on Barringer Road, Mansfield, on three occasions, despite his ban.
This happened on March 24, 27 and 31 this year, with the ban imposed in November 2023 as part of a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) secured by local officers. During the incidents, he stole various items, including biscuits.
He also stole goods from other local businesses on March 2 and April 1. Evans appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court on Monday, May 26, and was was jailed for 24 weeks after pleading guilty to theft and breaching his CBO.

As well as being ordered to pay compensation, the order was updated to include multiple additional businesses. Shoplifting offences in Mansfield have fallen by more than 30 per cent over the last year, police said.
Prolific offenders have been identified and targeted with restrictive court orders banning them from certain areas of the town and / or from doing certain things such as carrying large bags. Currently, nine such orders are in place and officers will be working to secure more.
Sergeant Catherine Darby, of the Mansfield town centre policing team, said: "Shoplifting offences are damaging not only for local businesses, but also for the town as a whole. That's why we are working so hard to target known offenders and to make their lives as difficult as possible.
"People like Evans should know that – for as long they keep committing offences – we will remain on their case and will leave no stone unturned in order to bring them to justice."

The number nine dilemma

Liverpool fan and writer Adam Beattie spoke to BBC Radio Merseyside about the need to sign another centre-forward this summer: "Darwin Nunez's time has run its course. It has been an experiment, and generally we get it right with the big-money signings, but it's bound to [go wrong] eventually. "People may be surprised at the fee Nunez may end up commanding because there is not really top-drawer number nines out there. Advertisement "It is an area we have needed to freshen for a while. I could make a case to let [Diogo] Jota go but I don't think you can let him and Nunez go. You would be leaving yourself too much to do. "Even if [Florian] Wirtz comes in, there is an argument to get a number nine - but there are not many that leap out at you." Listen to the discussion on the summer transfer window on BBC Sounds

5 Reasons Liverpool Is Splashing The Cash On Florian Wirtz

Wirtz has emerged as one of the most talked about soccer talents out there. It's getting closer. Liverpool is working to complete the transfer of Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz in a deal that would shatter its transfer record. All seems complete, barring a final few details around payments. Regardless, should it happen, the total sum will hit nine figures, almost certainly entering the top ten most expensive soccer signings ever. Perhaps the top five. So, why is Liverpool going all out for the Germany international? Wirtz isn't a youngster who may become a household name one day, nor an established star fast approaching 30 years old. He's both young, 22, already superb, and will get even better. In today's climate, teams should expect to pay up for someone like that. His statistics back up his easy-on-the-eye style—quick feet, drop of the shoulder, you name it. A regular selection for his country, he's got at least ten goals and assists for Leverkusen these last two campaigns—Mohamed Salah his only company in Europe's top leagues. The number 10 is almost the complete package. Performing well on the field, Liverpool's commercial revenue appears to be rising, despite overheads—like player wages and the expanded Anfield stadium's costs—holding it back a little and leading to a loss in 2023/24. However, a key difference now is having a more cemented place in the lucrative Champions League, with overall finances looking positive. The Reds also held back in the transfer market last year, presumably sensing a Wirtz-like signing, earmarked before, could be budgeted for and achieved later. He's a long-term buy, too, an asset whose value will likely plateau or increase. Recently turned 22, Wirtz is an established senior player for club and country. One of the best moments to invest is when you're on top. Indeed, the Premier League champion may not pull such an upmarket talent when things aren't going as smoothly, so, from a Liverpool stance, now's the time to assert authority. And there's space for growth. On the road to the title (comfortably sealed ahead of second-placed Arsenal despite both slowing down as the result crystallized), it only accrued two more points than its third-place spot from the previous campaign while falling short in the cups. Ex-Liverpool CEO Peter Moore recently spoke about the virtuous cycle—win, improve, repeat. That's a good path. For Liverpool, it's convenient that Wirtz represents Adidas. From this summer onward, the same German sports manufacturer will return to the kit after 13 years away—in a partnership reportedly earning Liverpool at least €71 million ($80 million) annually. If Wirtz thrives in an LFC jersey, it will mutually benefit Liverpool and Adidas. The playmaker would help market the apparel. And, if Adidas sees enough value, it could feasibly pay the team much more down the line, edging closer to rivaling the most lucrative deals on the continent: Real Madrid, Barcelona, etc. As with every target, Liverpool will have done tonnes of homework on Wirtz, poring over all the data. For the money it's offering, it knows Wirtz can play centrally and on the flanks to a high standard, giving coach Arne Slot more tactical flexibility. Beyond the stylistic factors, a decent level of English will help him settle, not to mention a familiar face, newly joined wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, with whom he combined so well at Leverkusen. Although there's never a guarantee, Liverpool has cause to be confident.

Local veteran gifted dream home by A Soldier's Journey Home

EVANS, Ga (WJBF) – A local veteran injured in combat and his family were surprised with the home of their dreams Saturday afternoon. A Soldier's Journey Home is a volunteer run organization working to build dream homes for worthy veteran recipients across the country. Ret. SFC David Mathis deployed multiple times to Iraq and is a double amputee after suffering life-altering injuries from an improvised explosive device in 2017. After walking through his new home, he says he was overcome with emotion. Saturday he saw his new home for the first time. 'The things that they've done, I would've never expected, and I never would have expected this at all. It's hard to put it in words,' said Mathis. The house took two weeks to build and is entirely wheelchair accessible. Throughout the process, Mathis' new neighbor offered a helping hand. Monte Latka says he had never heard of A Soldier's Journey Home before, but the organization was such an inspiration to him that he will be volunteering for the next project. 'It's just an absolutely fabulous deal and I'm excited to have them as neighbors. I'm going to do what I can to help out going forward with this cause,' Latka said. The Evans High School Jr. ROTC raised the American Flag officially welcoming the Mathis family home. Mathis says he cannot thank enough the organization and people who helped for building a home for him and his family. 'These people came from all across the country to do this work for me who they've never met, who they've never seen, and that's respectable and commendable,' Mathis said.
