Heavily strapped Haas makes fleeting appearance at Blues training

Payne Haas still appeared hampered by a quad injury as one of Laurie Daley's former Queensland Origin opponents made a surprise appearance at training at Ballymore on Monday.
Haas had his left quad heavily strapped and only completed a handful of tackles during the opposed session against Queensland Cup side Wynnum Manly before reverting to sprint drills on the sideline.
Blues officials remain hopeful the game's best front-rower will be fit to start at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night, with Stefano Utoikamanu on stand-by.
As Haas races the clock, Les Kiss, the former Queensland winger and incoming Wallabies coach was spotted on the sidelines.
Kiss, a former North Sydney Bears player who featured in four Origin games for the Maroons, was at the venue in his role as Queensland Reds coach.
The 60-year-old will attend his first Origin game in more than 20 years, and admitted there were a few players in the NSW and Queensland teams that would look good as Wallabies.
'I've cast my eye over both teams,' Kiss said. 'I'd love to have a couple of them, but at the moment we're really happy with what we've got. Joseph [Suaalii] joined us recently, you guys got Marky [Nawaqanitawase] to the Sydney Roosters.
'Both teams here have a few guys who could easily represent the Wallabies. But we're happy with our lot at the moment.'

NSW Blues forward Haumole Olakau'atu sacrifices State of Origin II selection for imminent arrival

Haumole Olakau'atu has withdrawn himself from NSW's State of Origin II squad to be with his partner ahead of the looming birth of their child. The 26-year-old Manly star was set to be named as a reserve but opted out of flying across the country to Perth for a non-playing role given the circumstances. His fiancee Ana is due to give birth to their first child imminently. The new addition will be Olakau'atu's second child, already having a son from a previous relationship. The Sea Eagles forward made his Origin debut last year, playing the first two games off the bench before being dropped and made 19th man for the decider. He still found himself in hot water with officials when he joined a scuffle and was sent off, later forced to watch NSW's celebrations from the sideline. With Olakau'atu absent from Origin II next week, Keaon Koloamatangi and Lindsay Smith will be the Blues' two reserves for the clash at Optus Stadium. Koloamatangi was edged out by Stefano Utoikamanu for a bench role after coach Laurie Daley was forced to make changes following Mitch Barnett's ACL injury. Max King will start at prop following a strong debut in the opener. Matt Burton remains NSW's 18th man. NSW's stability comes at a time when Queensland's halves are undergoing monumental changes, with Daly Cherry-Evans axed for next Wednesday's clash. But in Nathan Cleary's eyes, NSW's halves are only about to get better. The Penrith No.7's combination with Mitchell Moses was the major talking point ahead of Origin I, with both naturally dominant halfbacks in the NRL. It paid off, with Moses fitting into the supporting role and No.6 jersey unlocking his running game as planned in the 18-6 win. The duo hardly got in each other's way, linked up in the lead up to one NSW try and Cleary also played a role in each of the Blues' other three four-pointers. NSW have only had one other all-halfback pairing this century, with Trent Hodkinson and Mitchell Pearce joining forces in the 2015 series loss. Hodkinson spoke last month about how it became easier for the pair after they'd played one game together. And Cleary believes it would be the same for he and Moses, as NSW hunt a second straight series win with victory at Optus Stadium next Wednesday night. 'The way Mitch and I combined was good, but I think even that, we can go to another level,' Cleary said. 'I'm looking forward to getting to camp with them again and building that. 'It's probably just a bit of a feel thing (where we can be better). Especially when we're under fatigue and in the tough moments of the game. 'But still I thought just generally connecting off three training sessions really was pretty good.' Cleary said he expected to regain the kicking duties after handing over to Zac Lomax after three straight missed conversion attempts in Brisbane. He also believed his own game would benefit after not playing Origin since game one 2023 due to injury. 'It is a weird dynamic (with Origin), where once game three is done, it's almost like another year until you play game one again,' Cleary said. 'I think that's why with Origins series, you build into them. 'Particularly for me, coming back after two years out, I got to build those combinations in the first camp. 'But I think I can elevate those even more in this second camp.' NSW have now largely kept their squad intact for four straight matches, with the core of this year's team also winning last year's series. 'It helps,' second-rower Liam Martin said. 'You can hit the ground running when you're getting into training. You know each other. 'That was the goal last year to build something, start fresh and try and build a legacy of the Blues. It's a group where everyone wants to buy in. 'Everyone is chasing the same goal. Everyone's just got that team-first mentality, and it's pretty special to be a part of.'
