Emirati fencers clinch four medals at 12th NAS Sports Tournament

Gulf Today05-03-2025

UAE fencers claimed four medals on the second day of the championship held as part of the activities of the 12th edition of the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament in Dubai late on Monday.
It's arguably the largest sports tournament of its kind, launched and sponsored by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence.
This annual event takes place during the holy month of Ramadan at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex. Held under the guidance of Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, and carried out under the slogan 'Limitless Capabilities,' the tournament once again showcased an impressive performance by the home-grown fencers.
The winners were crowned by Engineer Sheikh Salem Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, President of the Asian, Arab and UAE Fencing Federations in the presence of Hassan Al Mazrouei, Tournament Director, Mahmoud Bassiouni, representative of Pocari Sweat, the tournament's health hydration partner, and Abdul Moneim Amin Shams El Din, representative of Al Tadawi Healthcare Group, one of the tournament's supporting partners, and Adel Al Bannai, Chairman of the tournament's Technical Committee.
The UAE team captured two silvers and two bronze medals each in the men's and women's categories for a total haul of four medals at the end of the contest.
The UAE's first silver medal came from Majid Mohammed following his 15-6 loss against Iran's Mohammad Ismaili in the men's epee, while the second silver came through Al Anoud Al Saadi as she went down 6-15 to Tunisian Olympian Sarah Besbas in the women's epee.
The two bronze medals for the home team came from Khalifa Al Zarouni following his narrow 14-13 win against Egyptian Khaled Buhdeima, while Sheikha Al Za'abi took the bronze in the women's epee after winning 15-12 against countrywoman Fatima Al Zahra Mohammed. The fencing championship had created quite a buzz as elite international fencers from different countries were competing in two epee competitions, namely an international men's contest and a separate one for UAE athletes.
The elite competition attracted athletes from 13 countries, including Italy, Peru, Egypt, France, Tunisia, Slovakia, India, USA, Russia, Tajikistan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and the hosts.
Engineer Sheikh Salem was pleased with the success of the competition. 'The Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament witnesses great development each year, especially the fencing championship, in which all fencers from around the world are keen to participate and compete, given its importance in honing skills and gaining new experiences.
'As we saw, the competition was honorable and sophisticated among the athletes, and we always count on this championship to discover Emirati talents and include them in our national teams. Thanks to organizing the fifth edition of the fencing championship at the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament, we succeeded in attracting the interest of many members of society in this sport, and we received many requests to participate in it. We were also able to attract many cubs and juniors to this ancient Olympic sport,' Sheikh Salem added.
'The participation of our national team in the Nad Al Sheba Sports Tournament contributes to supporting the strategy of the UAE Fencing Federation, which aims to develop and hone the skills of our national fencers through interaction with international players and Olympic champions, with an eye on future achievements at the continental and international levels.'
UAE Padel Team make strong start: The UAE Padel team defeated the Iranian team 2-1 as the Nad Al Sheba Padel Teams Championship got under way at the NAS indoor complex. The Emirati duo of Majid Al Janahi and Anao Ayats got their team off to a perfect start with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Iranian duo of Farsad Shahi and Arsham Moradi.
Iran dug in deep with Hami Golestan and Aria Rojani securing a 6-2, 7-6 victory against Fares Al Janahi and Inigo Joffre. But the UAE kept up a sustained pressure with Ignacio Villarino and Goinaga winning 6-1, 6-3 against Bahdoor Basirat and Amir Jamshedi.

Laba strikes as Al Ain prevail over Auckland City in friendly

Al Ain continued their preparations for the upcoming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over New Zealand's Auckland City in a friendly match held in Washington, where the team is currently based for their overseas training camp. The tightly contested encounter served as an important test for the UAE giants as they fine-tune tactics and build momentum ahead of the global tournament. The match's only goal came courtesy of Togolese striker Kodjo Laba, who showcased his trademark composure and striking instinct to find the back of the net. His decisive finish proved to be the difference in a game where both sides displayed discipline and determination, but Al Ain's superior quality ultimately turned the tide in their favour. Despite the narrow scoreline, Al Ain displayed dominance throughout much of the match, maintaining possession and dictating the tempo. The defense remained composed and organized, successfully nullifying Auckland City's counterattacks and long balls. Midfielders showed sharpness in transition, while the attacking line continuously pressed the opposition's backline, creating several chances that kept the New Zealanders under pressure. This win boosts Al Ain's confidence as they gear up for their opening fixture at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, where they will face Italian powerhouse Juventus on June 18. The match against one of Europe's most storied clubs is expected to be a major test. Emirati side Al-Ain won the 2024 Asian Champions League to secure their berth but have endured a dismal 13 months since, and the defence of their continental title ended in ignominy with no wins from eight matches. Hernan Crespo, who had led the club to their second Asian title, paid the price in November but his replacement Leonardo Jardim lasted only two months before Serbian Vladimir Ivic was drafted in to try to stop the rot. Togolese striker Laba, who was top scorer in the UAE Pro League last season, and Moroccan winger Soufiane Rahimi will be Al Ain's biggest attacking threats when they take on Manchester City, Juventus and Wydad in the group stage. Al Hilal fly Asian flag at Club World Cup: Al-Hilal will be the standard bearers for Asian football at the revamped Club World Cup after appointing Simone Inzaghi to coach a squad bristling with playing talent from Saudi Arabia and around the world. Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic have all joined Saudi captain Salem Al-Dawsari at the Riyadh-based club since it received major investment from the nation's Public Investment Fund. Former Inter Milan coach Inzaghi takes over a squad that fell short of their lofty standards by failing to win a fifth Asian Champions League title in May, a misstep that cost Jorge Jesus the chance to lead the team to the Club World Cup. While Al Hilal head to the tournament with ambitions of making a big impact in a group also featuring Real Madrid, Pachuca and Red Bull Salzburg, the expectations for Asia's three other clubs are likely to be more modest. At least one Asian team will go into the competition in decent form with Japanese outfit Urawa Red Diamonds showing improved domestic performances under Maciej Skorza. The Pole led Urawa to the Asian Champions League title in 2023, five months after replacing Ricardo Rodriguez, only to leave at the end of that season for personal reasons. He returned in late 2024 and has developed a side that are contenders to win the for the first time since their sole title in 2006. Former Japan midfielder Genki Haraguchi has returned to Urawa after a decade in Germany to lead the club's resurgence alongside the experienced Takahiro Sekine, who was instrumental in the club's Asian Champions League wins in 2017 and 2022. Urawa have been drawn with River Plate, Inter Milan and Monterrey at the Club World Cup. South Korea's Ulsan HD will be playing in the competition for the third time after featuring in the earlier iteration in 2012 and 2020.

Sharjah opens door to baseball championships

During the meeting, both sides explored avenues of cooperation to promote the sport and organise championships, in light of its significant popularity among Asian communities. The initiative also aims to add a new promotional platform for Sharjah, enhancing its regional and international presence through sports. A Global Brand with Regional Aspirations Baseball United was founded in November 2022 and supports 20 globally renowned teams, including the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Boston Red Sox. As a recognised international brand, its championships attract millions of viewers around the world—in Asia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Latin America. The organisation is now on its way to launching the first professional league involving teams from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and the Indian subcontinent. Foundations for the Game in Sharjah During the meeting, discussions were held on establishing a dedicated headquarters for the sport and developing baseball fields as a foundation for spreading the game. Plans include organising local competitions and hosting international championships in the future. The two sides also explored initiatives to launch youth academies and school programmes to scout talent, as well as leveraging the global league platform to market Sharjah as a sports, tourism, and educational destination for baseball. Sharjah's Competitive Edge Following the meeting, His Excellency Issa Hilal Al Hazami emphasised that Sharjah possesses the right environment to promote baseball, especially considering its popularity among Asian communities. He pointed out that the sport shares many similarities with cricket—a game that already holds a distinguished position in the Emirate, thanks to its large fan base and the iconic Sharjah Stadium, which hosts international championships. He stressed that incorporating baseball and participating in the Asian league would ensure guaranteed promotion and significant exposure for the emirate. Optimism for a Fruitful Partnership The head of the visiting delegation expressed his gratitude to the Chairman of the Council for the warm welcome and the positive outcomes of the meeting. He also conveyed his optimism about the anticipated collaboration between the two sides and the transformative impact this partnership could have on the sport both locally and internationally.

Kyrgyzstan hold UAE, Japan and South Korea celebrate WC qualification with big wins

Kyrgyzstan's never-say-die attitude saw them grab a last-gasp goal to hold UAE to a 1-1 draw in their AFC Asian Qualifiers – Road to 26 Group A tie on Tuesday. Kyrgyzstan's late salvo at Dolen Omurzakov Stadium saw them end their campaign on eight points while Cosmin Olaroiu continues to wait for his first win as UAE head coach with his side finishing on 15 points. With UAE's progress to the playoffs and Kyrgyzstan's elimination already decided going into the match, the game saw a cagey start before the visitors stole into the lead at the half hour mark. Valerii Kichin was dispossessed by Luanzinho at the halfway line, with the UAE midfielder driving forward before laying the ball off for Harib Abdalla to strike home past the advancing Erzhan Tokotaev. Abdalla was once again put through in the 41st minute but this time Tokotaev was quicker to react, forcing the forward to drag his shot wide. Deep into first half added time, Kichin went close to making amends for his earlier error when he produced a low shot from distance that UAE custodian Ali Al Hosani reacted well to push onto the box. Kyrgyzstan emerged after the interval a different side as they looked to put more pressure on the UAE defence. Ermek Kenzhenbaev's attempt from distance took multiple deflections and was easily claimed by Al Hosani before Joel Kojo set up Kimi Merk inside the box, only for the latter to crash his shot against a UAE defender. With 10 minutes of regulation time remaining, Kojo had a close range header caught by Al Hosani but Kyrgyzstan fought until the very end, eventually finding the equaliser through Kai Merk in stoppage time. Uzbekistan closed their campaign with a commanding 3-0 win over Qatar. Timur Kapadze's men, who have already booked their spot in their first FIFA World Cup Finals, finished with 21 points from 10 matches. Qatar will have to navigate the playoffs, where two additional places at next year's global showpiece are up for grabs. The West Asians finished fourth in Group A with 13 points. Uzbekistan dominated Qatar after a slow start, with early chances from Amro Syrag, Husniddin Aliqulov, and Eldor Shomurodov. The breakthrough came in the 28th minute when Azizbek Turgunboev beat two defenders and blasted a shot in off the bar, leaving Salah Zakaria helpless. Shomurodov and Jaloliddin Masharipov kept Qatar under pressure, with Masharipov nearly scoring after the break. Zakaria made several key saves, including denying Khojiakbar Alijonov in the 63rd minute. Shomurodov doubled the lead in the 86th minute, controlling a long pass and finishing clinically. Igor Sergeev sealed the 3–0 win in stoppage time with a close-range header shortly after coming on. Zakaria's efforts in goal kept the score respectable for Qatar. Elsewhere, Crystal Palace forward Daichi Kamada scored twice for Japan and Paris Saint Germain's Lee Kang-in netted for South Korea as the Asian giants rounded off successful World Cup qualifying campaigns in style. Japan romped to a 6-0 thrashing of Patrick Kluivert's Indonesia in Osaka, while South Korea cruised to a 4-0 win over Kuwait in Seoul where fans were treated to a late appearance by their idol Son Heung-min. FA Cup winner Kamada struck twice in the first half for already qualified Japan, who finished as Group C winners. Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino and substitute Mao Hosoya were also on target against Indonesia, who came fourth in the group and moved on to a further qualifying round. Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu has set the ambitious target of winning next year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Moriyasu said his players need to keep improving 'in all departments' and praised their attitude against Indonesia. 'The challenge for the players is to break past their limits and grow,' he said. Wang Yudong's 90th-minute penalty enabled already eliminated China to avoid finishing bottom of Group C with a consolation 1-0 win over Bahrain in Chongqing.
