Suspect linked to multiple crimes arrested at east mall after chase
A motorist linked to a string of card scams and robberies in Pretoria and the West Rand was apprehended at a mall in Equestria following a chase.
The driver was nabbed, however, his two accomplices managed to escape on foot at The Grove Shopping Mall.
According to Sergeant Alfred Legodi of the Tshwane Flying Squad, the suspects in a grey Mercedes-Benz A200 Hatchback were identified driving without licence plates.
The vehicle had been linked to previous crimes, including a shooting incident near Groenkloof Plaza.
He said law enforcement tracked the car using location data. It was spotted on the N1 northbound near Olifantsfontein Road.
Legodi explained that the suspects allegedly generated significant income through daily illegal activities before their arrest.
It is reported that the vehicle was later located at Hazeldean Shopping Centre, where suspects had just scammed a male victim and robbed him of R10 000.
Upon noticing law enforcement's presence, the suspects sped away.
'The driver allegedly crossed a central barrier and drove into oncoming traffic, endangering other road users,' Legodi explained.
He said the pursuit continued into The Grove Shopping Mall, where the suspect forced entry by tailgating through a boom gate and dropped off two passengers, who fled and remain at large.
'The chase extended into the mall's basement parking, where attempts were made to bring the vehicle to a stop. After warning measures were implemented, the vehicle was stopped.'
Legodi added that the driver attempted to escape on foot but was swiftly apprehended.
He said law enforcement officers recovered licence plates and items believed to be connected to ongoing investigations.
'The car was traced with the help of the rental company and later returned to its representatives,' said Legodi.
'The primary suspect is currently in custody and faces multiple charges. Investigations are ongoing to arrest the two suspects who are still at large.'
He added that no injuries or property damage were reported during the incident.
Tshwane police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk offered these safety tips:
– Make use of an ATM at a trusted venue.
– Go into the bank to request assistance.
– Make sure you have your bank card after you make a transaction.
– Make sure to stand alone at the ATM.
– Listen to your intuition and walk away if you feel uncomfortable in a situation.

Rietondale residents distraught over police inaction
Rietondale residents have expressed growing frustration over what they describe as ongoing safety concerns being ignored by the metro police, despite repeated calls for intervention. According to Ward 84 Councillor Anru Meyer, there have been several events happening in the area without the metro's permission, and a lack of police visibility is making things worse. 'For over a month now, lack of TMPD visibility has led to by-laws being violated in parts of the suburb, such as Rietondale Park and the property on the corner of Nico Smith Street and Codonia Avenue.' He said the Hardy Muller circle and CR Swart Drive have become taxi ranks, with taxis stopping anywhere on the corner of Nico Smith Street, where buses and trucks need to come to an instant stop. 'These violations make it harder for truck drivers who need to stop [trucks] of more than 15 tons.' He said vagrants are setting up camp at the park, making open fires, and on weekends, events are hosted at the park without the Joint Operations Committee's (JOC) approval. 'Delivery vehicles, trucks and taxis also use it for parking.' He said recently, a sports event was hosted at the park, and spectators were drinking alcohol on the sidewalks and playing loud music. 'When we call the metro police to assist, they are not available, and if they do arrive, nothing is done about the situation they are called for. 'The TMPD has been contacted numerous times on these issues, but to no avail. Emails have been sent with no response.' Meyer said the lack of TMPD visibility has affected the lives of the whole ward, not only Rietondale. He said crime has increased in parts of the suburb and urged for more patrols in Rietondale Park, especially over the weekends. 'In Rietondale last week, a bin was also stolen. There was a recent cable theft in Villieria, which was also not responded to.' He said the TMPD must respond to complaints when there are events without JOC approval. Meyer added that he open space on the corner of Nico Smith and Codonia should be constantly patrolled by by-law enforcement and be cleared regularly. Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the metro had not been informed of the events that took place on the reported days. 'The city was not informed of any planned events taking place at the facility on those days.' The TMPD was contacted for a response to the complaints. Spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said the issues raised were operational matters, which are not discussed publicly. 'As police, we do not discuss operational plans in public as they are confidential and classified. We don't announce when we are planning to conduct our operations,' he said. Glen Marais armed robbery foiled, six suspects arrested
Swift action by law enforcement and private security companies brought an armed robbery to a halt at Granor Passi in Glen Marais on Tuesday afternoon, June 11. 'The EMPD's Northern Region task team, working alongside the Benoni Flying Squad and several private security companies, including R&D Risk services, CLC, ER24, CPF Sector 2, Red Ops, Mamba, SSS, Motor Track, Jungle Boyz, Rapid Response, and AfriForum responded to the robbery in progress at approximately 12:49,' said EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato. On arrival, officers found six suspects at the scene, four men aged between 40 and 44, and two women aged between 33 and 36. During the incident, the suspects allegedly forced open a safe and assaulted a female staff member, striking her in the mouth with a firearm. She was taken to hospital for medical treatment. Although no money was taken from the premises, officers recovered three firearms at the scene. Police to launch investigation into hitman's confession in Magaqa murder

Image: Supplied A former KwaZulu-Natal south coast municipality senior official, believed to be one of the masterminds behind the murder of the former ANC Youth League leader, Sindiso Magaqa, could be added to the three accused when they appear in the Pietermaritzburg High Court next week. The official was named by the confessed hitman, Sibusiso Ncengwa, when he pleaded guilty to killing Magaqa last week. In his 13-page affidavit, Ncengwa, who is already serving a long jail term for his involvement in a cash heist, detailed how Magaqa's murder was planned and executed. He named the official and late Harry Gwala District Municipality Mluleki Ndobe as the mastermind behind Magaqa's murder, who he said hired him and other accused to assassinate the former ANC Youth League leader, who was an ANC councillor in Umzimkhulu at the time. Ndobe and the official were arrested in 2018; however, they were released due to insufficient evidence at the time. Ncengwa, businessman Mbulelo Mpofana, former policeman Sibonelo Myeza, and Mlungisi Ncalane were arrested in 2018 and charged with Magaqa's murder. They would be back in court on Thursday, June 19, 2025, except Ncengwa, who will return at the end of the month for sentencing after the State accepted his guilty plea. Reacting to the confession, police provincial spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the new allegations would be investigated by the case's investigating officer. "The investigating officer of the case is in court, so if there is new evidence or allegations coming out in court in relation to the case, of course, he would have to investigate," said Netshiunda. However, he warned that police do not arrest people simply because they are named in a crime, but investigate and determine the next step. Police are also expected to investigate the alleged involvement of the National Prosecuting Authority officials and a former journalist after the hitman also revealed their roles. Ncengwa also revealed shocking details about the role played by the SAPS's Crime Intelligence Unit members in the planning and execution of Magaqa's killing; however, police said the allegations against officers would be referred to either Hawks or the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) According to Ncengwa, the police purchased the AK-47 they used to murder Magaqa with slush funds. He added that they bought a Mercedes-Benz that was used for trips to Durban and Umzimkhulu. He added that by escorting their vehicle on the day of Magaqa's shooting, the police ensured that no officers would arrest them while travelling to Durban. The police officer who did this was compensated R20,000. The hitman provided details about the NPA's involvement, stating that he would have confessed a long time ago had the agency not attempted to stop him.
