Trees uproot, houses suffer damage on Day 3 of heavy rain in Ernakulam
Kochi: Ernakulam district continued to witness widespread damage due to intermittent moderate to heavy rainfall on Monday. The district recorded heavy damage from rains on Saturday and Sunday.
Ernakulam was on red alert on Monday, and various places reported incidents of trees uprooting, houses being damaged, cars skidding and electric poles and cables getting damaged. Over the past three days, 50 houses were partially damaged and one was completely destroyed. Chengamanad and Nedumbassery villages experienced a localized whirlwind situation on Sunday evening, causing significant damage to houses and farming sector.
Idamalayar dam area received heavy rain in the past 24 hours, recording 13.8cm by 8.30am on Monday. Ernakulam received an average of 6cm rainfall in the past 24 hours.
A jamun tree fell on the rail track between Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town railway stations on Monday morning when Kozhikode-bound Jan Shatabdi Express left Ernakulam Junction station. The train could continue the journey after obstructions on the track were removed.

A tree fell on rail track in Aluva too and train services resumed after clearing it.
Rain-related damage continued to be reported from Kanayannur, Muvattupuzha, North Paravur and Kochi taluks. Sea swell led to saline water entering houses in coastal areas, including Edavanakkad and Kuzhuppilly. KSEB suffered heavy damage in rural areas of Ernakulam over the past three days.

Under Angamaly division, widespread damage occurred in Angamaly, Karukutty, Mookkannoor and Parakkadavu sections, with 11 kV feeders failing. Six high-tension (HT) and 41 low-tension (LT) poles were broken and trees fell on wires in several places.
In Aluva division, widespread damage was reported in areas like Kunnukara, Chengamanad, Kalamassery and Athani. Five HT and 67 LT poles were broken by fallen trees, 185 LT lines snapped and poles tilted in eight locations. Billboards falling on high-tension lines along national highway also caused power disruptions.
In Kuruppampady section under Perumbavoor division, a tree fell on 33 kV sub-station distribution network, causing damage.
In this division, seven HT and 170 LT poles were broken and poles tilted in 11 locations.
In Muvattupuzha division, 17 HT and 58 LT poles were broken by fallen trees, 614 LT lines snapped and poles tilted in 70 locations. Trees fell on LT lines in 313 locations.
In Piravom section, 100 kVA transformer at Kannettumala toppled due to a landslide. Under Ernakulam circle, no major damage was reported within city limits. However, damage was reported in Tripunithura, North Paravur and Vypeen areas.
Meanwhile, the body of a 41-year-old man, who went missing at Arakuzha village on Sunday night, was retrieved from Piravom on Monday evening, around 20km from Arakuzha. The deceased, Jobin Jose of Vallikada went missing in the water when he went to bring back cattle from the shore of Muvattupuzha river.
