A set of first editions of Shakespeare's plays could fetch $6 million at auction
LONDON — A set of the first four editions of William Shakespeare's collected works is expected to sell for up to 4.5 million pounds ($6 million) at auction next month.
Sotheby's auction house announced the sale on Wednesday, Shakespeare's 461st birthday. It said the May 23 sale will be the first time since 1989 that a set of the First, Second, Third and Fourth Folios has been offered at auction as a single lot.
The auction house estimated the sale price at between 3.5 million and 4.5 million pounds.
After Shakespeare's death in 1616, his plays were collected into a single volume by his friends John Heminges and Henry Condell, actors and shareholders in the playwright's troupe, the King's Men.
The First Folio — fully titled 'Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories & Tragedies' — contained 36 plays, of which half were published there for the first time. Without the book, scholars say, plays including 'Macbeth,' 'The Tempest' and 'Twelfth Night' might have been lost. Sotheby's called the volume 'without question the most significant publication in the history of English literature.'
About 750 copies were printed in 1623, of which about 230 are known to survive. All but a few are in museums, universities or libraries. One of the few First Folios in private hands sold for $9.9 million at an auction in 2020.
The First Folio proved successful enough that an updated edition, the Second Folio, was published in 1632, a third in 1663 and a fourth in 1685.
Although the First Folio is regarded as the most valuable, the third is the rarest, with 182 copies known to survive. It is believed the third book's rarity is because some of the stock was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
The Third Folio included seven additional plays, but only one – 'Pericles, Prince of Tyre' – is believed to be by Shakespeare.

Ferris Bueller's iconic vest goes up for auction 40 years after famously skipping school
Few films have done more to cement the city of Chicago's reputation in American culture than 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off,' the 1986 teen comedy classic that follows Ferris and his two friends as they skip school in the suburbs to explore everything the Windy City has to offer. Now, 40 years after cameras first rolled, an iconic piece of the film's wardrobe is jumping off the screen and into one lucky fan's closet. Starting today, Sotheby's will be auctioning off the signature sweater vest worn in the film by Matthew Broderick, who starred as the teenage slacker Ferris. The vest is featured in some of the movie's most memorable scenes: Ferris electrifying the Von Steuben Day Parade audience with his performance of 'Twist and Shout,' the gang taking in a Cubs game at Wrigley Field and the trio making a trip through the Art Institute of Chicago. ''There are few costumes in Hollywood history that are instantly recognizable and this is undeniably one of them,' Darren Rovell, Emmy Award winner and the vest's owner, said in a statement. Rovell said that the piece has been not only photo matched to the vest seen on screen, but also has been inspected by costume designer Marilyn Vance before being made available to the public. The film was Vance's fourth collaboration with John Hughes, the man behind the Chicagoland-set classics, 'The Breakfast Club' and 'Pretty in Pink.' As the entire film takes place over the course of one day, Vance wanted to ensure each lead had a costume that told viewers everything they needed to know about the characters in just one look. Early on, she decided Ferris should wear a sweater vest, as Vance felt it would quickly demonstrate his disregard for the conformist style rules of the adult world of the decade. Her search for the perfect vest eventually led her to a Chicago institution: Marshall Field's. There, she picked up an off-the-rack cardigan, trimmed its sleeves and created one of cinema's most iconic looks. The vest manages to be retro, weird and cool all at once — perfect for the vision both Vance and Hughes had of the character. 'Bueller's vest is emblematic of the character's most exciting quality,' Sotheby's said in the statement, 'the ability to blend in anywhere, while standing out just enough to get exactly what you want from the world around you.' Three pieces of baseball memorabilia are included: the baseball Ferris catches at Wrigley Field and tickets from both baseball games featured onscreen (though the scene takes place over a single game, footage from two games was used in the final film). A pair of movie tickets from the film's original run are also included: one from a Showplace Cinema and one from a theater in Japan. The bidding for the vest opens today, June 5 — the day Ferris himself left the suburbs and headed downtown, celebrated across the country as Ferris Bueller Day — and doesn't close until June 24. Jane Birkin's Hermes bag is going to auction at Sotheby's
The original Hermès Birkin bag, once worn by the late actor and singer Jane Birkin, is heading to auction at Sotheby's this summer. The leather handbag inspired what would be become one of the world's most desired, hard to acquire and priciest fashion accessories. While the auction house resells a range of secondhand Birkin bags, ranging in price from $5,000 to $220,000, there's only one original. "No handbag in the world carries as much cultural significance as the Hermès Birkin. But before it became the ultimate symbol of luxury, the Birkin was born out of necessity — crafted specifically for Jane Birkin herself," Sotheby's said in a statement Thursday announcing the auction. Chance encounter Birkin, who died in 2023 at age 76, was known for her artistry and style. In addition to her songs, including recordings with celebrated singer Serge Gainsbourg, she appeared in classic films including Michelangelo Antonioni's 1966 "Blow-Up." She was also admired for her political activism, capaigning for Myanmar's pro-democracy movement and the fight against AIDS, among other causes. "Jane Birkin was a French icon because she was the incarnation of freedom, sang the most beautiful words of our language," French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on social media when she died. An errant remark from Birkin to Jean-Louis Dumas, then the head of Hermès, on an Air France flight in 1984 spawned the creation of the Birkin bag, according to Sotheby's. At the time, Birkin complained she couldn't find a bag big enough to accommodate her belongings for daily use. Dumas quickly sketched a bag that he would go on to make, and later name, for her. The bag is now made in a variety of colorways, leather types and sizes based on the prototype Dumas made for the singer. But "the Original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind — a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible," Morgane Halimi, Sotheby's global head of handbags and fashion, said in a statement. Costly, not expensive? Sotheby's has not indicated how much the bag could fetch. A spokesperson for the auction house told CBS MoneyWatch it will provide an estimate to interested parties upon request, noting the bag's exceptional provenance. By comparison, Sotheby's sold Princess Diana's historic black sheep sweater in 2023 for $1.1 million, 14 times its estimate of $80,000. In December, Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas, told "60 Minutes" that the fashion house's leather goods, including the Birkin bag, are as costly as they are because the company refuses to compromise on quality or craftsmanship. He also disputed the notion that Hermès goods are "expensive," while conceding hey are "costly" to make. "The cost is the actual price of making an object properly with the required level of attention, so that you have an object of quality," Dumas told 60 Minutes in the interview. "Expensive is a product which is not delivering what it's supposed to deliver, but you've paid quite a large amount of money for it, then it betrays you. That's expensive." Customers have accused Hermès of deliberately limiting production of Birkin bags, a notion Dumas dismissed as a "diabolical marketing idea" that the company does not employ. Rather, he insisted, the company can't keep up with the enduring demand for the Birkin bag, while only a few craftspeople are trained to make the item.. "Whatever we have, we put on the shelf and it goes," he said.

Sotheby's to Auction Original Hermès Bag That Belonged to Jane Birkin
Sotheby's will soon auction the original Hermès Birkin bag that once belonged to the late singer Jane Birkin, one of the most coveted designs in the fashion industry. The famed black leather handbag will be put up for sale in Paris on July 10, the auction house said in a statement Thursday. The original Birkin was commissioned in 1984 exclusively for and in collaboration with Jane Birkin by Hermès International SCA's then Chief Executive Officer Jean-Louis Dumas. Birkin recalled in interviews how she bumped into Dumas on a flight and complained about the lack of an Hermès handbag that suited her needs. The British-French singer retold how she sketched a model on a 'vomit bag' and shortly after Dumas presented her with the original Birkin which the brand commercialised under her name. Jane Birkin sold her bag in 1994 to raise funds for an AIDS charity. It was auctioned again in 2000, and has since belonged to the collector who goes by the name 'Catherine B' on Instagram. Her account biography on the platform says she's the 'proud owner of the first Hermès Birkin bag.' A Sotheby's representative confirmed that the collector is the seller. Hermès bags often fetch higher prices at resale than they cost in boutiques due to long waiting lists. The record for a bag sold at auction is held by an Hermès Kelly known as Himalaya, made in crocodile skin and carrying a diamond, which fetched 4 million Hong Kong dollars in 2021 ($510,000) when it was auctioned by Christie's.
