Venezuelan Navarro reports xenophobic remark during Copa Libertadores clash

Talleres midfielder Miguel Navarro from Venezuela said Sao Paulo opponent Damian Bobadilla made a xenophobic remark during Tuesday's Copa Libertadores clash, which saw the Brazilian side beat the Argentinian team 2-1.
The incident occurred late in the match after Luciano da Rocha Neves had scored the winning goal, sparking tensions on the pitch.
According to Navarro, an exchange of words turned bitter when Bobadilla allegedly said: "You starving Venezuelan".
"I wish I could have in my hands the solution to the hunger that my country is experiencing, I hope that God gives me abundance to be able to help. I don't think much can be done about mental poverty," Navarro said on social media.
"I will never be ashamed of my roots, I will go to the last consequences in the face of the act of xenophobia that I experienced today in Brazil at the hands of Damian Bobadilla. In football there is no room for hate speech," he added.
According to Brazilian media, Navarro reported the verbal abuse to local police, although authorities arrived at Talleres' dressing room after Bobadilla had left the stadium.
Bobadilla issued an apology through a video posted on social media on Wednesday.
"We exchanged some rough words. I was offended at first but I apologise because, in the heat of the moment, I reacted badly. It wasn't my intention to discriminate. If I get the chance to talk to Miguel, I will apologise to him directly," the Paraguayan midfielder said. REUTERS

After her performance on May 30 at the US Women's Open, she is halfway to another. The Japanese fired a six-under 66, the best round of the championship so far, and finished the day with a three-stroke lead at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin. She piled up seven birdies and made just one bogey on the USGA's difficult course setup to get to eight-under 136. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Nelly Korda moved into the picture by shooting a 67 to jump to 5 under. Korda is tied for second with Sarah Schmelzel (68), Yealimi Noh (71), Sweden's Maja Stark (69), Japan's Hinako Shibuno (69) and Kim A-lim of South Korea (71). Saigo won the Chevron Championship in April via a five-way play-off, the largest in women's Major championship history. It was the 23-year-old's first LPGA win of any kind. 'I think that I was able to be more confident about my judgments that I make,' she said about what she gained from that experience. 'However, I would like to play my play rather than thinking about changing myself.' Saigo led the field in putting, needing just 24 putts to get through 18 holes. The longest birdie putt she made was a 32-footer at the par-four 12th. 'Today's condition was better than yesterday,' she added. 'That's why I made a lot better shots and a lot better putts than yesterday, and that brought me a better score and results.' Korda went from having just one birdie and one bogey in the opening round to a much more colourful card of seven birdies and two bogeys. 'All week I was hitting putts really well,' she said. 'I wasn't discouraged by all the missed putts or the close calls that I had yesterday. I just tried to build on that because I was hitting really good putts.' The American also said she will aim to stick to her process heading into the weekend, as she hunts for her first US Women's Open and third Major. Alcaraz wobbles but reaches French Open last 16
Reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz stumbled his way into the last 16 of the French Open on Friday (May 30) with a 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Bosnian world number 69 Damir Dzumhur. Second seed Alcaraz broke twice in each of the first two sets and seemed to be cruising but a dogged Dzumhur refused to roll over and pinched the third set. The 33-year-old Dzumhur had failed to get past the first round of qualifying at Roland Garros in his last four attempts, but he broke to open the fourth set and give Alcaraz greater cause for concern. Alcaraz's frustration grew when three break points slipped beyond his grasp the very next game. He eventually got back on serve at 3-3 though before another break put him within sight of victory. The Spaniard couldn't close it out initially but then earned a pair of match points on Dzumhur's serve, finally getting across the line at the second attempt to end his rival's spirited effort. 'Today I honestly didn't enjoy it that much. I suffered quite a lot,' said a relieved Alcaraz. Benzema leads Al-Ittihad to Saudi Cup win and domestic double
Al-Ittihad's Karim Benzema scored twice to lead his side to a 3-1 victory over Al-Qadsiah in the Saudi Cup final on Friday (May 30) as they completed the domestic double. Laurent Blanc's side dominated the game to win the cup for the 10th time, while Al-Qadsiah finished the game with 10 men after Ezequiel Fernandez was sent off in the 81st minute.
