New SCCC leadership team to strengthen Sabah-China ties

KOTA KINABALU (June 14): The Sabah-China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) has reaffirmed its leadership with Datuk Frankie Liew Chun Kim re-elected unopposed as president during its Third Council re-election.
The harmonious filling of all council positions underscores the chamber's unity and confidence in Liew's continued stewardship.
The election, held on Thursday at SCCC's Kolombong headquarters, proceeded smoothly in a spirit of cohesion.
Liew hailed the event as a testament to the chamber's stability and maturity.
In his acceptance speech, he thanked members for their trust and pledged to advance Sabah-China cooperation, creating new opportunities for businesses.
SCCC also extended a warm welcome to the newly appointed Chinese Consul General in Kota Kinabalu, Zhu Xinglong.
Liew emphasized that SCCC has always maintained a good and close relationship with successive Consuls General of the Chinese Consulate in Kota Kinabalu, collaborating on various initiatives to promote bilateral cooperation. Looking ahead, the chamber will continue to fully support the work of the Consulate General and serve as a bridge for fostering friendly relations between Sabah and China, striving for a win-win future.
Zhu is the fourth Consul General of the Chinese Consulate in Kota Kinabalu since its establishment in 2014, succeeding Consul General Huang Shifang, who concluded her term at the end of March this year.
Since its 2019 inception, SCCC has championed economic and trade exchanges between Sabah and China, offering members policy insights, investment resources, and networking platforms.
Looking ahead, Liew stated that the chamber will continue to deepen its exchange services between the two regions, further strengthening collaboration with the government and major institutions, and actively facilitating key projects and cooperation plans beneficial to regional economic development.
'We will continue to serve as a bridge and link for investment promotion efforts by the federal and Sabah governments, boosting the momentum of the local economy. At the same time, we aim to elevate the overall quality of entrepreneurs, actively empower women and young entrepreneurs, and support the local business community in shining on the international stage,' he said confidently.
With the new Council of SCCC now formed, carrying on the legacy while embracing new leadership, the chamber enters a new and exciting chapter. The appointment of the new consul Glgeneral, combined with the smooth formation of the leadership team, sets the stage for a promising future in Sabah-China cooperation and exchange.

GEORGE TOWN: As school-leavers and parents face pressure to make the right education choices, the Star Education Fair 2025 provides a one-stop platform to explore academic programmes and financial aid opportunities. Now in its 38th year, the long-running fair is a rare opportunity to access diverse study options and funding resources under one roof. Held over two days until today, the event drew tens of thousands from Penang and neighbouring states on its opening day yesterday. Visitors explored over 100 booths representing 57 local and international institutions offering programmes ranging from pre-university to postgraduate levels. Students were drawn not just by enrolment perks but also by the chance to engage directly with education providers. S. Yamuna, 18, a recent SPM leaver from SM Bukit Jambul, attended with her mother in search of an information technology course. 'I was in the IT stream at school, which gave me early exposure to software and computing. 'Now I'm looking for something that matches my interests and is affordable – ideally with scholarship options,' she said. Her mother M. Puspa Kumari, 49, appreciated the convenience of comparing multiple institutions in one place. 'Tertiary education is a big step. This fair saved us the trouble of visiting each campus individually,' she said. For Form Five student Jason Lim, 17, the fair was an eye-opener. 'I wanted to explore both local and overseas universities,' he said. 'Scholarships and foundation programmes matter a lot to me. Even if I qualify, the cost of living and tuition need to be manageable. I also want a course with strong career prospects.' Exhibitors echoed the fair's importance, particularly in the northern region where such events are held less frequently. Patrick Ooi, assistant vice-president of INTI International College Penang, said the fair was an ideal platform to showcase over 50 programmes. 'We've received strong interest, several appointments and even on-the-spot sign-ups. 'With campuses in Penang, Subang, Nilai and Kota Kinabalu, we cater to a wide range of academic goals,' he said. Peninsula College deputy chief executive officer Tan Choo Khuan highlighted the appeal of their 'Campus-in-Industry' model. 'As a subsidiary of PKT Logistics Group, we place students within industrial parks where they can work part-time through our 'Jom Belajar Sambil Bekerja' initiative,' he said. 'They graduate with both academic and work experience certification.' Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) vice-chancellor Dr Beh Kok Hooi noted that education fairs serve more than just promotional purposes. 'They raise awareness on the importance of tertiary education,' he said. 'With over 70 programmes, we're the only institution in the northern region offering Chinese Studies from diploma to doctorate level.' Organised by Star Media Group, the fair remains one of Malaysia's longest-running education expos. Admission is free, with door gifts for early birds. Key exhibitors include INTI International College Penang, Peninsula College, HCUC, Universiti Kuala Lumpur and The One Academy Penang. Others include UCSI University, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Universiti Malaya, TARUMT, AIMST University, Open University Malaysia, City University Malaysia, Wawasan Open University, University of Southampton Malaysia and Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia. Sabah PH to start polls negotiations with GRS soon, says PKR leader

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Sabah Pakatan Harapan is expected to begin official talks with Gabungan Rakyat Sabah soon in preparation for the 17th state election. Sabah PKR chief Mustapha Sakmud said the state chapter had been given the green light to negotiate with GRS by both the PKR and PH central leadership, RTM reported. He said the main focus of Sabah PH at present is to form a strong political collaboration to ensure the state's stability and development. 'We've started talks with Barisan Nasional. After this, we will hold discussions with GRS,' he was quoted as saying. Last month, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor reiterated his desire to continue the existing alliance between his coalition and PH for the upcoming state election. Hajiji, who is the Sabah chief minister, said the existing cooperation between GRS and PH in governing the state should be the foundation in determining any electoral pact. He had also conveyed his views to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is the PH chairman. Hajiji had stated numerous times in the past GRS's intention to work with PH in the state election, which must be held by the end of the year. In early May, however, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH had agreed to work together to face the state polls, following a meeting between their chairmen, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Anwar. Hajiji then threatened that GRS would go solo, but Anwar later stepped in and called for PH-BN to work with the state coalition. AdChoices ADVERTISING Earlier today, GRS deputy secretary-general Armizan Mohd Ali supported Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin's call for GRS and BN to contest against each other in the state election. He said Bung's suggestion to consider cooperation only after the election is reasonable, as a direct contest would clarify who has real support.
