US moves military assets, restricts major Mideast base
The US military is moving aircraft and ships from bases in the Middle East that might be vulnerable to any potential Iranian attack, US officials say.
The moves come as President Donald Trump keeps the world guessing whether the United States will join Israel's bombardment of Iran's nuclear and missile sites, as residents flee its capital on the sixth day of the air assault.
Separately, the US embassy in Qatar issued an alert on Thursday temporarily restricting its personnel from accessing the Al Udeid Air Base, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, which is in the desert outside Doha.
The embassy told personnel and US citizens in Qatar to step up vigilance in "an abundance of caution and in light of ongoing regional hostilities".
Two US officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the move of aircraft and ships was a part of plans to protect US forces, but declined to say how many had been moved and where to.
One of the officials said aircraft that were not in hardened shelters had been moved from Al Udeid base and naval vessels had been moved from a port in Bahrain, where the military's fifth fleet is located.
"It is not an uncommon practice," the official said. "Force protection is the priority."
Reuters was first to report this week the movement of a large number of tanker aircraft to Europe and other military assets to the Middle East, including the deployment of more fighter jets.
An aircraft carrier in the Indo-Pacific is also heading to the Middle East.
Israel launched an air war on Friday after saying it had concluded Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon.
Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons.
Iran has conveyed to Washington that it will respond firmly to the United States if the latter becomes directly involved in Israel's military campaign, the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva said on Wednesday.

‘Cynicism is part of our attitude': Missile hits Israeli hospital
Press Office former director Daniel Seaman discusses the impact of Iranian missile attacks in Israel last night. 'They attacked Israel twice through the night, I think they were very kind not to do this in the middle of the night just before we went to sleep … that cynicism is part of our attitude here,' Mr Seaman told Sky News host Sharri Markson. 'The first attack, there were no real casualties, the second one they hit in Tel Aviv area, and the other one is in the hospital in Soroka, which completely destroyed the whole part of that hospital.

Sharri Markson rips into Tucker Carlson for ‘hysterical protest' against Trump
Sky News host Sharri Markson says Donald Trump is 'likely' to order the B2 bombers with the bunker buster bombs to hit the Fordow nuclear site in Iran. This comes as Soroka Hospital in southern Israel has been smashed by an Iranian missile as both countries continue to exchange fire. 'He'll do this despite the hysterical public protests from anti-Americans who claim to be American first – the most prominent of these is Tucker Carson,' Ms Markson said. 'Tucker is dressing up his anti-Western views as die-hard MAGA, when it's the exact opposite. 'In intelligence circles, he is considered a pawn and propaganda tool of Russia's.'

'I'm very worried about what's happening here … I'm not so sure what the objective here is. 'I hope the President is considering all of these things very deeply because it has huge implications for the rest of the world.'
