28 Years Later fans are left shocked over 'weird' Jimmy Savile reference and 'insane' cliffhanger ending

Daily Mail4 hours ago

28 Years Later has finally hit screens after years of anticipation and longtime fans of the horror franchise rushed to cinemas to watch the new film.
The third instalment has been hailed by critics as 'terrifying and electrifying' after it hit UK screens on Friday, and it stars Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Jodie Comer.
With plenty of jump scares and gore, it provides fans with the long-awaited update about the state of the world 28 years after the outbreak that hit the UK in the 2002 original 28 Days Later.
However, one unexpected detail has left fans completely baffled as there was a seeming reference to disgraced TV presenter Jimmy Savile.
The 'bizarre' ending introduced Jack O Connell's character, cult leader Sir Jimmy Crystal, who appears to have been directly inspired by Jim'll Fix It presenter Savile.
Sexual abuse allegations emerged against Savile after his death in 2011, and it is believed he preyed on around 500 victims aged from five to 75 years old over many decades.
And the movie appeared to reference the disgraced former BBC star as Sir Jimmy and his cult followers were all dressed up in tracksuits, blonde wigs and jewellery.
If the visual parallels weren't enough, all of the characters were also called 'Jimmy' as the cult appeared to have modelled itself off the infamous sexual predator.
In the fictional world of 28 Years Later, it is not known whether Savile's crimes would have come to light, given the virus took over the UK in 2002, 10 years before they were uncovered in real life.
Viewers were left completely shocked by the 'weird' reference with many taking to social media to share their confusion over the ending, arguing the reference to Savile wasn't necessary.
Taking to X, they wrote: 'Just realised that Jack O'Connells character in 28 Years Later could be a nod to Jimmy Savile';
'Seriously don't get that last minute whatsoever weirdest tone shift ever'; '28 years later......did it really need the Jimmy Savile angle?';
'Watched 28 years later last night and I can't believe they had a character called Jimmy who dressed exactly like Jimmy Savile';
'Just seen 28 Years Later. Is 'Jimmy' and gang modelling themselves on Jimmy Savile?!'
Not referencing Savile, other fans took to social media to general share their baffled thoughts after the movie jarringly transitioned from an emotional death scene to Sir Jimmy and his clan - before abruptly ending.
Comments included: 'I really liked 28 years later!! I think it adds more to the franchise but damn that ending fell flat!';
'After telling my wife about 28 Years Later I think I've warmed to the ending a little'; 28 Years Later ending got me all like huh?;
'The ending of 28 years later is so stupid, they could never make me hate it'; 'Just watched 28 years later and holy!! Was so good (except for the ending lowkey bonkers)';
'Watched 28 years later and it was as mostly good but the ending gave me incredibly weird vibes';
'The ending of 28 Years Later kind of justifies seeing it in theaters, solely to hear the reactions of the audience. Did not see that coming at all, and I honestly kind of loved it, as jarring as it was.'
According to Business Insider, director Danny confirmed the rumours that Savile was the inspiration behind Jack's character.
'He's as much to do with pop culture as he is to do with sportswear, to do with cricket, to do with the honors system,' he allegedly told the publication of Savile.
With plenty of jump scares and gore, it provides fans with the long-awaited update about the state of the world 28 years after the outbreak that hit the UK in the 2002 original 28 Days Later
'It's all kind of twisting in this partial remembrance, clinging onto things and then recreating them as an image for followers.'
The unexpected cliffhanger ending will no doubt be addressed in the upcoming fourth movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, as Jack is set to return as Sir Jimmy.
It is believed that the character will be involved in a plot surrounding selective memory in the upcoming sequel, which is slated to hit screens in January 2026.
The fourth movie will look at how different groups try to construct a future based on their memories and 'amnesia' about the past.
'We are living in a time right now which is absolutely dominated by a misremembered past,' Alex added.
The first movie of the series, 28 Days Later, followed Jim (Cillian Murphy), who awakes from a coma to discover Britain has been plagued by a terrible pandemic known as the Rage Virus, which turns those affected into murderous zombies.
He didn't star in the second instalment 28 Weeks Later and isn't in the third newly-released movie 28 Years Later, Cillian will make a brief appearance in the upcoming fourth instalment.

Wynne Evans slams BBC again over ‘double standards' after Naga Munchetty is hauled in over sex jibe

WYNNE Evans has lashed out at the BBC again over its "double standards". The axed radio star commented on The Sun revealing BBC Breakfast presenter Naga Munchetty was hauled in over a sex jibe at Radio 5 Live. 2 Wynne shared today's front page of the newspaper detailing the programme's toxicity row, amid claims Naga was reprimanded by bosses over two incidents in three years — including allegations she bullied a junior staffer. Posting The Sun front page in a now-deleted post, Wynne said: "I really wish Naga well and I hope she doesn't get hounded. "But come on @bbc @bbccymruwales what double standards. "Tim Davie [Director-general of the BBC] promised to protect people on Strictly from being hounded by the press, but he won't even meet with me." Wynne recently sat down with The Sun's Clemmie Moodie to reveal his side of the story after losing his job following three allegations levelled against him. He accused the BBC of abandoning him in the wake of a series of controversies that erupted during and after his time on Strictly Come Dancing. The corporation said he was offered a dedicated contact at the BBC and was offered "continued" mental health support since his contract concluded. Director General Tim Davie issued an unprecedented apology, and vowed to clean the show up, after a formal complaint from actress Amanda Abbington into Giovanni Pernice's behaviour. A raft of ex-contestants then came forward with their own horror stories. Another dancer, Graziano Di Prima was then fired after a video emerged of him kicking his partner Zara McDermott. Naga is the first female presenter to be caught up in the series of scandals which have gripped the Beeb. She was reprimanded by a senior producer over the sex jibe, but no formal action was taken. As the BBC is now facing questions of double standards, an insider said: 'If a male presenter made a sexual comment like that or falsely accused someone of theft, he'd be out the door. But with Naga, it gets brushed off.' A BBC spokesperson said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously.'

Watch heartwarming moment Jesy Nelson's partner Zion dances with tiny daughter after coming home with their baby twins

JESY Nelson's partner Zion Foster danced with their newborn tiny daughter in a heartwarming moment. Former Little Mix star Jesy, 34, welcomed twin girls with boyfriend Zion following a high-risk pregnancy. 4 4 4 The newborns are named Ocean Jade Nelson-Foster and Story Monroe Nelson-Foster, respectively. Taking to Instagram, Jesy shared a poignant video of Zion dancing with one of the girls. With music playing in the background, Zion wiggled the baby's hands and feet while singing to her. He also addressed the other twin, saying: "You wanna do some dancing too?" Last week, Jesy confirmed the baby girls were finally home - after a long hospital stint. She penned on Instagram: "My babies made it home for my birthday." One fan responded: "I knew they would make it home to be with you, precious miracle girls they did it for you. "They love you so much and wanted to be with mummy on her special day. Happy birthday angel!" While another shared: "So happy you guys are all home together." During her pregnancy, Jesy was diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). Jesy Nelson gives birth to twins two months early after emergency procedure to save their lives TTTS is a rare but serious condition in which blood flows unevenly between identical twins sharing a placenta - putting both babies at risk. The diagnosis took Jesy and Zion by surprise and they revealed they had no idea what TTTS was before the diagnosis. Jesy has already had a successful operation, though didn't specify the type of procedure, and has been keeping herself busy with a self-care and beauty regime. Meanwhile Zion ran the London marathon with less than five weeks training, in order to raise money for the charity Twins Trust in honour of their little ones. What are the different types of twins? TWINS are when two children are produced in the same pregnancy. They can be identical or different, and two boys, two girls, or a girl and a boy. Twins are quite rare, but are usually born completely healthy What are the different types of twins? Monozygotic – identical twins ('one cell' twins) Dizygotic – also known as 'fraternal', non identical twins. Babies are no more alike than siblings born at separate times, and they can be the same or different sexes Conjoined twins – identical twins that are joined together. They are extremely rare, and it's estimated they range from one in 49,000 to 189,000 births, although around half are stillborn, and one third die within 24 hours. Can identical twins be two different sexes? Identical twins are always of the same sex because they form from the same fertilised egg that contains either female or male chromosomes. The single egg is divided into two separate embryos, and they occur in about three in every 1000 deliveries worldwide. Therefore, boy/girl twins are always fraternal (or dizygotic), as their chromosomes are either XY (male) or XX (female). What are Di Di twins? Di Di stands for Dichronic Diamniotic, and they are the common type of twins. They have their own amniotic sacs and placenta, so are just sharing the womb of the mother, and are therefore not identical. There are few complications with Di Di twins, so have a good chance of being born completely healthy without intervention from your doctor. Di di twins are more likely to be non-identical than identical. As he completed the 26.2mile mission, Jesy watched from her room and declared in a sweet post: 'I honestly didn't think I could love you any more than I already do @zionfoster but you have made me and our babies the proudest!!!! 'You had under 4 weeks to train for the London Marathon and you have worked your absolute bum off to be able to cross that finish line today whilst raising money for an amazing cause @twinstrust and for our babies.' She added: 'Words will never be enough to let you know how proud I am of you. 'The most amazing human and daddy — we love you baby. You smashed the London Marathon!!!!' 4

King teams up with Idris Elba for Netflix debut

The King is to make his Netflix debut with a documentary about 'the power of believing in young people'. His Majesty has teamed up with actor Idris Elba for the programme, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the King's Trust. The monarch will 'offer rare access and insights' into his support for the charity over the past five decades. Filming will begin next week and the documentary will be broadcast in autumn 2026. A Buckingham Palace aide said: 'The King is pleased for the trust to have this wonderful opportunity to showcase their work to a global audience, sharing the compelling stories of some of the more than 1million young people it has helped in Britain and internationally over the past 50 years.' Buckingham Palace is increasingly turning to the documentary format to highlight the King's work and reach a wider audience. It has also proved willing to move away from domestic terrestrial producers such as the BBC and ITV that traditionally produce royal, set-piece documentaries. In January, it emerged that the monarch will appear in a feature-length film on Amazon Prime based upon his 'philosophy of harmony'. The film is being made in collaboration with The King's Foundation, which is this year celebrating its 35th anniversary, and is being filmed at Dumfries House, its base in Scotland. Due to be released at the end of this year or in early 2026, it has been described as 'a chance to show, not tell' viewers 'how they can transform people, places, and ultimately the planet.' The new Netflix documentary will be made by Elba's own production company, 22 Summers, which will involve young people supported by the King's Trust to help them build experience in film and television. It will mark the monarch's first collaboration with the streaming giant, which in recent years has become more known for its affiliation with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. In 1976, the King used his £7,400 severance pay from the Royal Navy to create the Prince's Trust, which helps disadvantaged young people get into education, training and jobs. 'King's Trust changed my life' Elba has recently spoken of his eternal gratitude to the King for founding the charity, admitting that it changed his life. The actor was 16 when he was awarded a £1,500 grant from the organisation to enable him to train at the National Youth Music Theatre. He admitted that when he initially applied, he thought he was wasting his time. But he came home from school one day to find a letter in a white, handwritten envelope addressed to 'Idris Elba Esq', complete with the royal seal. Inside was a cheque from the trust that enabled him to pursue his dream, putting him 'on the right trajectory.' Elba, who has also founded his own charity called the Elba Hope Foundation, said: 'The King's Trust gave me an opportunity that changed my life. 'At a time when I didn't have the resources to pursue my ambitions, they offered real, practical support – including financial help – that helped me take those first steps to advance my career. 'Today, through the Elba Hope Foundation, I'm focused on creating those same opportunities for young people who are full of potential but lacking access. Around the world, millions are still waiting for that one door to open. 'This documentary is about shining a light on what's possible when it does — and why the work of The King's Trust remains so important.' Jonathan Townsend, UK chief executive of The King's Trust, said: 'At its heart, this is a documentary about the power of believing in young people. 'It's about an idea, driven by a young Prince who was determined to make a positive difference, that when young people are supported to succeed, we all succeed.' The latest announcement follows several appearances by the King on television shows in recent years. At the end of last year he appeared on a BBC Christmas special of Countryfile which was filmed at his Highgrove home, highlighting the work of The King's Foundation's education programmes. The King also took part in a special episode of The Repair Shop in 2023, where he showcased the work of the charity's students and spoke about his passion for heritage crafts.
