Drug bust leads Santa Cruz CHP to 14 guns, pile of bullets
(KRON) — A traffic stop in Watsonville led authorities to more than $15,000 worth of suspected fentanyl and a small hoard of guns.
The California Highway Patrol pulled over a 31-year-old Watsonville man around 2 p.m. Thursday. During the stop a CHP K9 hit on the smell of drugs in the man's black Honda Sedan.

'During the stop, CHP K9 Rae alerted officers to the presence of drugs,' the CHP's Santa Cruz office said. 'A search revealed a plastic bag containing a controlled substance.'
A loaded gun magazine was also found inside the car and officers proceeded to search the driver's home. The Santa Cruz County Auto Theft Reduction and Enforcement, Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team, and the Watsonville Police Department all teamed up to search the home.

During the search officers confiscated 14 guns and dozens of cases of ammunition. The man was arrested for multiple felony drug and gun charges.

Driver dies in collision with Amtrak train in Modesto
MODESTO — A driver died after being struck by an Amtrak train in Modesto, officials said Monday. It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m. along State Route 132 just west of Santa Fe Avenue. California Highway Patrol's Modesto division said its preliminary investigation shows the driver of a Chevy SUV attempted to pass around activated crossing arms when the left side of the vehicle was struck by the oncoming train. The collision resulted in the SUV catching fire. CHP said the driver was declared dead at the scene. A passenger on the train suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital. Investigators are still looking into why the driver attempted to pass through the activated crossing arms. Amtrak train 712 was traveling from Oakland to Bakersfield.

Waymo suspends service in parts of San Francisco amid recent ICE protests
(KRON) — Waymo suspended service in parts of San Francisco on Monday, according to a company spokesperson. Service for the driverless taxi service was halted amid recent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests in the city that became violent. The Waymo spokesperson did not specify where in San Francisco service will be suspended. The autonomous vehicle company says it is aware of the potential protests in the city. As a precaution, Waymo is not providing service in those areas. Waymo is in contact with local authorities in San Francisco to determine where it may need to halt service in the city. Another protest against ICE is set to take place in San Francisco Monday evening at the 24th and Mission BART Plaza. On Sunday evening, hundreds gathered outside the ICE building on Sansome Street in the Financial District. More than 150 arrests were made as the rally turned violent, with vandalism committed across the area. Multiple Waymos were vandalized in San Francisco, including one that was spray-painted (see photo below). BART station shuts down, Muni diverted due to SF ICE rally Protests against ICE are at a much larger scale in downtown Los Angeles where Waymo has suspended service in that portion of the city. Waymo received guidance from the Los Angeles Police Department to halt service amid multiple driverless taxis being set on fire and vandalized. One Waymo driverless car is between an estimated $150,000 and $200,000 each, according to a 2024 report by the Wall Street Journal. Mexico's president condemns violence amid protests against ICE raids
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday denounced acts of violence linked to widespread demonstrations in Los Angeles against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown. Speaking during her regular morning news conference, Sheinbaum called for respect for legal processes in immigration enforcement and asked U.S. officials to uphold the rule of law. 'We condemn violence wherever it comes from,' Sheinbaum said, per Reuters. The protests erupted on Friday after Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted raids in the city and surrounding communities. Demonstrations were largely peaceful, but tensions flared Saturday and Sunday. Police have reported 42 arrests after Sunday's protests turned violent, including 19 by the California Highway Patrol, who were called to a demonstration that closed the 101 Freeway through DTLA for several hours. Local and state leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, have criticized President Donald Trump's use of the National Guard in trying to quell anti-ICE immigration, saying the escalation in force has led and will only lead to further trouble.
