Major crash wrecks four police cars
At least four police cars have been wrecked in a major crash.
The collision caused 'serious injuries' to those involved, with a section of the A1 expected to remain closed until at least Wednesday afternoon.
One of the marked vehicles appears to have lost its roof, while another has lost its door.
Pictures of the scene show a car which looks to have flipped over and is leaning upright against the central reservation.
The road is closed between Swalwell, in Gateshead, and Denton, Newcastle, following the 'multi-vehicle' incident at around 2.30am, the Highways Agency said.
'Due to the severity of the collision a full Northumbria Police investigation is underway and they advise that it will be protracted,' the agency said.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: 'Shortly before 2:30am today (Wednesday) we received a report of a multi-vehicle collision on the A1 northbound near the Derwent Haugh Road junction, Gateshead.
'Emergency services are currently in attendance.
'A section of the road is closed in both directions – there are diversions in place from the Derwent Haugh Road junction northbound, and the A69 roundabout southbound. Motorists should use alternative routes where possible.'
The North East Ambulance Service has been contacted for comment.

Greta Thunberg Mocked by Israeli Officials After Aid Vessel Seized
Greta Thunberg became the focus of ridicule from Israeli officials and pro-government social media accounts after Israeli forces brought to an end a symbolic maritime mission aimed at delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. The Madleen, a British-flagged yacht carrying Thunberg and other activists, was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in international waters and escorted to Ashdod port. Israeli authorities indicated the detained activists would be processed and repatriated; as of Monday, they were in custody. Officials dismissed the voyage as a publicity stunt, while activists accused Israel of unlawfully detaining them. Newsweek has reached out to Thunberg's representatives as well as Israel's foreign ministry for comment. The incident highlights Israel's strategy of publicly discrediting high-profile critics amid its Gaza campaign, and the global struggle over the narrative of the situation. While Israel says that it is letting aid into Gaza, foreign aid agences describe a humanitarian disaster that has intensified during the war waged by Israel since the Hamas attack in October 2023. The Israeli seizure and ensuing mockery of the activists came amid an already polarized debate over the fighting in the devastated territory, where the Hamas health authorities say over 54,000 Palestinians have been killed. About 1,200 Israelis were killed in the Hamas attack on Israel, according to official Israeli sources and more than 200 were taken hostage, some still in Hamas captivity in Gaza. Israel's Foreign Ministry derided the mission as a "selfie yacht," asserting that "the show is over" and circulating images of Thunberg being handed a sandwich aboard the vessel. Defense Minister Israel Katz labeled participants "Hamas propagandists" and saying they would be shown footage of the October 7 Hamas attacks during their detention "so they understand what Hamas is." Katz praised the Israeli military for maintaining security. A verified X account associated with FC Ashdod, an Israeli soccer club, posted a mock image announcing Thunberg's "signing" as a striker from Swedish club AIK Solna. The parody post celebrated an "excellent half-season". The Madleen set sail from Catania, Sicily, on June 1, carrying aid including baby formula, rice, medical kits, solar panels, and prosthetics. On Sunday, the Israeli navy intercepted the yacht in international waters about 115 miles (185 km) from Gaza. Shayetet 13 commandos and border units boarded the vessel. Twelve people were aboard, including Thunberg and French politician Rima Hassan, along with journalists, medics, and civil society members. Organizers say the seizure violated maritime law and constituted kidnapping. Israel Foreign Ministry on X: "The 'selfie yacht' of the 'celebrities' is safely making its way... The show is over." Defense Minister Israel Katz: "They will be shown the video of the Hamas massacre. Let them see what Hamas is." Greta Thunberg, in a pre-recorded video: "If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel." The activists are expected to be repatriated to their home countries in the coming days. Israeli authorities have said the aid onboard will be transferred through official humanitarian channels. Reporter hit as LA officers fire rubber bullets at protesters
An Australian news correspondent was hit as Los Angeles police fired rubber bullets Sunday as tensions with immigration raid protesters escalated. 'After hours of standing off, this situation has now rapidly deteriorated,' Lauren Tomasi, the U.S. correspondent for Australia's 9News, said in a live report from downtown Los Angeles shortly before she was hit. 'The LAPD moving in on horseback, firing rubber bullets at protesters, moving them on through the heart of LA,' she continued. Moments later, Tomasi audibly exclaimed as she grabbed her calf, apparently in pain, as the camera panned away from the incident. 'You just f‑‑‑ing shot the reporter,' an individual was heard saying off camera. Another individual asked Tomasi if she was OK, and she said, 'I'm good.' Tomasi returned to her reporting spot hours later, and a 9News anchor in Australia asked the U.S.-based correspondent for an update on her condition. 'I'm OK. My cameraman Jimmy and I are both safe. This is just one of the unfortunate realities of reporting on these kinds of incidents. It has been a really volatile day on the streets of Los Angeles,' Tomasi said, before reporting that downtown Los Angeles had mostly cleared out by nightfall. 9News issued a similar statement after the incident. 'Lauren Tomasi was struck by a rubber bullet. Lauren and her camera operator are safe and will continue their essential work covering these events,' the statement read, according to the outlet's reporting of the incident. 'This incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers journalists can face while reporting from the frontlines of protests, underscoring the importance of their role in providing vital information,' the statement continued. A British news photographer, Nick Stern, was also struck while reporting on the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles over the weekend, according to numerous British outlets. He is now recovering from emergency surgery. 'My initial concern was, were they firing live rounds?' Stern told a news agency, noting he was struck by a 14 mm 'sponge bullet' in his thigh. 'Some of the protesters came and helped me, and they ended up carrying me, and I noticed that there was blood pouring down my leg,' he added. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Watch: Man chased across Heathrow airport tarmac
Credit: Big Jet TV A man has been filmed being chased across the tarmac at Heathrow airport. In footage posted online, the man was seen running away from other figures in an incident that lasted several minutes before finally being apprehended. The video, captured by a plane spotter, was posted on social media. The man appeared to be running from at least four other men, but eventually stopped when a van carrying workers in fluorescent tops arrived. It is understood the individual was arrested because shortly after being stopped, a police van was on the scene. A Heathrow spokesman said: 'Working with partners, we have quickly resolved an incident at the airport involving an individual who accessed the airfield taxiway. The individual has been removed from the airport. 'The airport continues to operate as normal, and passengers are travelling as planned.' The Metropolitan Police was approached for comment.
