21 MLAs urge PM Modi, HM Shah to reinstall popular govt in Manipur

Hans India30-04-2025

Imphal: In a significant political development, 21 Members of Manipur Legislative Assembly (MLAs) have urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to reinstate a popular government in the state.
A group of MLAs went to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the office of the Union Home Minister in New Delhi on Tuesday and submitted the letter, signed by 21 legislators.
One of the MLAs on Wednesday confirmed the development and said that out of the 21 lawmakers, most belong to the BJP and the remaining are from the National People's Party (NPP), Naga People's Front (NPF) and two independent legislators.
Manipur has been under the President's Rule since February 13, four days after the resignation of N. Biren Singh from the Chief Minister's post. The 60-member Manipur Assembly, which, after the promulgation of President's Rule, has been put under suspended animation, has a tenure till 2027.
The letter of the MLAs to the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister said that the people of Manipur welcome the President's Rule with lots of hope and expectations, but no visible actions to bring peace and normalcy in the state have been seen so far.
The letter said: 'There is a strong apprehension among the common people that the violence may recur again in the state. Many Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have come out openly against the imposition of the President's Rule. They have been demanding the installation of a popular government in the state. These organisations have started organising public rallies, street corner meetings, instigating the general public, blaming the ruling MLAs for not staking claim to form a popular government and fixing responsibility for the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur.'
The MLAs in their letter said that the installation of a popular government is the only means to bring peace and normalcy in Manipur. 'We assure you that we will work with full dedication and devotion to bring peace and normalcy in our state after the installation of a popular government,' the letter said.
After the imposition of the President's Rule on February 13, this is the first major appeal to the Centre to reinstate the government.
In a bid to resolve the two-year-long ethnic hostilities, the first tripartite meeting between the officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the representatives of Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities was held in New Delhi on April 5.
The six representatives of All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) and the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) took part in the tripartite meeting from the Meitei community. Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) Chairman Henlianthang Thanglet led an eight-member delegation of Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in the meeting where MHA advisor for the northeast region, A.K. Mishra, and Joint Director, MHA, Rajesh Kamble, Manipur Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, Additional Director General of Manipur Police Ashutosh Kumar Sinha, among others, were present.
Over 250 people were killed, 1500 injured, and over 70,000 people displaced after the ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki-Zo people on May 3, 2023, after a 'Tribal Solidarity March', organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The rioting also left thousands of houses, government and non-government properties, and religious installations destroyed or damaged.

Union Ministers, MPs must safeguard state's interests: DKS

Bengaluru: In view of Maharashtra CM raising objection to increasing height of Alamatti dam, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Monday called upon the Union Ministers and MPs from Karnataka to safeguard state's interests. 'As per the Krishna Tribunal's order, Karnataka can increase the height of Alamatti dam to 524 meters. Maharashtra, which was quiet when the order was pronounced, has suddenly written a letter to our CM objecting to it. I appeal to all the Union Ministers and MPs with folded hands to protect state's interest in this,' the DCM, who also handles Irrigation portfolio, said addressing a press conference at Vidhana Soudha. 'Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has written a letter to our CM Siddaramaiah on May 9 raising objection to increasing the height of Alamatti dam. Stating that Sangli and Kolhapur districts would face flooding if the height of the dam is raised, the letter has asked for re-evaluating the plan. This letter is a shock to us. Maharashtra had never raised objection to this project till now. They had not raised any issues when the Tribunal passed its judgement in 2010. Maharashtra had even submitted an affidavit to the Tribunal seeking increasing Alamatti height but it is opposing it all of a sudden. 'This project is our right accorded by the Krishna Tribunal. Our CM will give a reply to the letter by the Maharashtra CM. Union Minister V Somanna is part of Union Jal Shakthi ministry. Alamatti project is needed for the state, we don't want friction with our neighbouring state. The cost escalation is very due to delay in this project. We would need Rs 1 lakh crore for land acquisition for this project,' he said. 'Flooding in Maharashtra is their internal matter and they need to fix it. We will meet the PM and the Union Jal Shakthi Minister and put pressure regarding this. Karnataka has been waiting for a Gazette notification for increasing Alamatti height since 2013. How long should we wait? We will share the letter from Maharashtra CM and our reply to that to all our MPs.' Asked if Maharashtra CM's letter has a political motive, he said, 'I don't want to get into that now, I will only speak for our state's interest. There is no scientific basis for the letter. Increasing Alamatti dam is our right and we appeal to all parties concerned to let us execute the project.'

Indian flyers projected to double by 2030, says PM Modi

Speaking at the International Air Transport Association's 81st AGM in New Delhi, PM Modi said that the government is also planning to integrate commercial space flights and interplanetary journeys into the ambit of the country's aviation read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India's average number of flyers is projected to increase to almost 50 crore annually from the current 24 crore by 2030, a figure that is well over some countries' population. Speaking at the International Air Transport Association's 81st AGM in New Delhi, PM Modi said that the government is also planning to integrate commercial space flights and interplanetary journeys into the ambit of the country's aviation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The prime minister also highlighted that India boasts one of the most inclusive aviation workforces in the world, with women making up 15 per cent of the country's pilots, triple the global average of 5 per cent. Looking ahead, the number of operational airports is projected to rise from the current 162 to 350 by 2047. Additionally, air cargo volumes are expected to grow significantly, reaching 10 million metric tonnes by the end of this decade, up from 3.5 million. In five years, India is set to become a $4 billion maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) hub, PM Modi said, adding, 'India should not be viewed merely as an aviation market, but as a value-chain leader. From design to delivery, India is becoming an integral part of the global aviation supply chain.' 'We are working on a futuristic roadmap to maximise India's potential. In 2014, the country had 74 operational airports, which have now expanded to 162 and will increase to 350 in 2047. We are now the third largest aviation market globally. Our airlines have over 2,000 new aircraft on order,' he continued. Noting the success of DigiYatra, the system that makes travelling paperless, PM Modi said that other countries should adopt a similar mechanism, adding, 'Digi Yatra stands as a secure and smart solution, serving as a model of inspiration for the Global South.' 'There are three foundational pillars driving India's aviation sector: A vast market - not merely a collection of consumers but a reflection of India's aspirational society. A strong demographic and talent pool where young innovators are pioneering breakthroughs in AI, robotics, and clean energy. And finally, an open and supportive policy ecosystem which will take aviation to unprecedented heights,' the prime minister said. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
