DFDS announces 'transparent' flat rate freight price for Jersey
A flat rate freight pricing policy will provide more "transparency around ferry costs", Jersey's new ferry operator DFDS has said.In line with the terms of the tender process, the Danish company announced its flat rate prices - meaning each importer will pay the same rate regardless of how much freight they bring to the island.It said it was using a "flat rate price of £56 per lane metre and £45 for commodities", but has not responded to requests for more details.DFDS, which is due to start operating from the island next month, also released its freight schedule for sailings to the UK on Thursday, with 12 return sailings a week to the UK and one to St Malo, France.
The company said it hoped the changes would "encourage a more competitive market and provide greater certainty around the transportation of goods".Carl Walker, from the Jersey Consumer Council, said: "It was never really clear from a consumer perspective as to what everything from a bag of cement to a loaf of bread was costing to bring in."Now, everybody will be on a level playing field, everybody will see what things cost to bring over and would give us a better idea of who is providing the best value for money."
He said there could be an initial "bump in the road" if companies passed on price increases to customers.Mr Walker said: "Some will inevitably have to pay more and some may be paying slightly less than they're currently paying so we're going to see that potentially filter through to the prices in the things that we buy in the supermarket."Looking at it more long-term, what this gives is price transparency so that now we will know exactly what freight companies are charging."When people complain that things are more expensive here we will be able to get more of an idea as to why and where those pinch points might be that need addressing in the future."
'Keep prices low'
The government's chief economist Tom Holvey said the published flat rate was "encouraging" and any changes resulting in short-term "price pressures" would be expected to be below "half a percentage point".He said: "It will promote competition in the island, provide openness of this element of the vital supply chain, and remove a barrier to market entry, which over time will help keep prices as low as possible for islanders."Passenger bookings for the new ferry services between Jersey, France and the UK were put live in January - with the chief minister warning the first few weeks were likely to be a "little bumpy".Chris Parker, route director for Jersey, said: "We hope this marks a positive step forward for the island, with DFDS adopting this new structure to demonstrate a long-sighted commitment to connecting Jersey with its trade partners."We shall of course, continue to improve and refine our services, working with the community."

Tottenham face huge Thomas Frank bill as Ange Postecoglou sack decision looms
EXCLUSIVE: Tottenham are weighing up the future of Ange Postecoglou, with Brentford manager Thomas Frank now emerging as the leading contender to replace the Australian boss Tottenham will face a staggering bill in excess of £10m to hire Thomas Frank. Brentford boss Frank is the leading contender to replace Ange Postecoglou, whose future is in grave doubt despite leading Tottenham to Europa League glory. Frank has two years left on his contract and a big buy-out clause was written into the deal when he signed his last deal in December 2022. The Danish boss is one of the most highly-rated managers in the Premier League and Brentford clearly do not want to lose him and the buy-out reflects his value to the club. There is also a belief that Frank gave a gentleman's agreement to stay for one more year at Brentford, although that would clearly be tested if anyone meets the buy-out clause which would allow him to go. Frank would have no shortage of offers not just from the Premier League if he decided to leave Brentford this summer but Tottenham would be a big opportunity. They won the Europa League, are back in the Champions League and have a world class stadium with money to spend. However, Tottenham boss Daniel Levy has yet to give a final decision on Postecoglou's future and sacking him and his staff would cost around £5m plus there is also a £2m bonus for the Aussie after he won the Europa League. The cost is mounting up for Tottenham amid a potentially big summer of change - and would grow even bigger if they decide to go for Frank. That may put off Levy as that would be a huge compensation and also a big 'transfer fee' in managerial terms. Tottenham are believed to have sounded out Frank while Fulham boss Marco Silva is also a candidate while Bournemouth are battling to keep Andoni Iraola. Postecoglou was appointed two years ago. There is a feeling that Tottenham's direction has been heavily influenced by his agent group Base. There has already been signs of a shake-up at the club with the departure of Levy's long term ally and trusted director Donna Cullen. Former Arsenal chief Vinai Venkatesham has also started work as Tottenham's new chief executive and Fabio Paratici looks set to return after serving a ban from a punishment from his time at Juventus. Last month, Frank appeared to brush off suggestions he could leave Brentford this summer. He said: 'Right now, of course, I am committed. I just lost to Fulham, our local rivals, so [I am] fuming in every aspect. So yes, I am committed like I have always been.' Postecoglou meanwhile has insisted he is preparing to remain in his post for the start of the new season. He said: "I'll be honest, I've been finding it really weird talking about my future when we've done something unprecedented. "I've had to answer the questions because no one else at the club is kind of in the position to do so, I guess. But I can't answer that question about me and my future, and part of me is kind of thinking, well, why have I been asked that question? But it is what it is. "And I've got no doubt, though, that this could be a real sort of defining moment for this club because wherever I've been, I've kind of made an impact where I've brought success to a club that hasn't had for a while."
