Belle Isle charity workers 'heartbroken' after minibus theft
A charity that supports elderly people in Leeds has said the theft of its new minibus was "heartbreaking".The Trinity Network in Belle Isle celebrated its 50th anniversary last year and in January raised £24,000 to buy the vehicle, affectionately named "Norman".Just eight weeks later on 13 March, staff opening up the charity centre realised the minibus had gone.Sarah Crane, driver of the bus, said her "heart stopped" and she "nearly burst into tears" when she realised the vehicle had been taken.
Ms Crane said: "We had one lady, she was our most stout supporter and she passed away at the weekend and I was supposed to pick her up on Thursday and Friday."Knowing that I couldn't spend those last few days with her, that's devastating, because of somebody else's greed, you can't put into words how that makes you feel."Around 100 people a week use the centre, which is attached to the United Reformed Church in Belle Isle.However, Trevor Heylings, the centre manager, said that number had now reduced to about 65, because without the minibus some members with disabilities, or mobility issues, were unable to attend."One particular gentleman came five days a week, he's now down to one because we managed to get him here on the Leeds Access Bus, so we are trying our damnedest to get members in," he said.
Vera Skilbeck, who relies on the minibus to bring her to the sessions, said she was "really upset" when she heard the vehicle had been stolen.She said she was instead having to travel to the centre on her mobility scooter. "We need it, we need the bus, not them, they don't need it," she said."We can't hardly walk, some of the people are in wheelchairs."
West Yorkshire Police said: "On Thursday 13 March, it received a report of a theft of a minibus from a compound off Nestfield Road."It was reported that the minibus was taken some time between 16:15 GMT on Wednesday 12 March and 09:00 on Thursday 13 March."The force urged anyone with information to get in touch.

Police officer jailed for raping woman while off duty
A police officer who raped a woman while off-duty has been jailed for five years. Former West Yorkshire police officer, PC Ben Bottomley, 23, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. He raped the woman before joining the force and sexually assaulted her while he was a student officer. Both offences were reported to the police after he joined the force. He was sentenced to four years imprisonment for rape and one year imprisonment for sexual assault by penetration on Wednesday. The sentences will be served concurrently. Bottomley will also be subject to the requirements of the Sex Offenders Register for life. West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Directorate conducted an investigation that led to his conviction, and they immediately suspended him. A misconduct hearing is set to take place next month with a view to ban him from policing. Following his conviction in April, Detective Chief Superintendent Tanya Wilkins said: 'These were extremely serious allegations to be made against a serving police officer and he was immediately suspended from duty when the investigation commenced in June 2023. 'The victim has shown immense courage in coming forward to report these offences. We do not underestimate how hard it is to report such offending in any circumstances but understand that there may also be additional concerns when the perpetrator works in policing. 'I hope the investigation and subsequent prosecution show that police and partners will take action, regardless of the occupation of the offender. 'We are committed to protecting women from violence and sexual violence. PC Bottomley has demonstrated a disregard for the victim's right to consent and, in addition to any custodial sentence he is given, he will now be subject to extra conditions on him as a convicted sex offender.'

A police officer who raped a woman while off-duty has been jailed. PC Benjamin Bottomley, 23, from Kirklees, was found guilty of rape and sexual assault after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court. He attacked the victim, an adult woman, before joining West Yorkshire Police. One of the offences took place while he was a student officer. Bottomley was jailed for five years and will be on the Sex Offenders Register for life. A formal misconduct hearing will take place in July with a view to banning him from policing. As both offences were reported after Bottomley joined the force, he must also face misconduct proceedings by West Yorkshire Police.A force spokesperson said: "An accelerated misconduct hearing is due to take place next month with a view to him being added to the College of Policing's Barred list, preventing him from gaining further employment in policing."
