'We didn't think twice': SBS Transit staff return bag containing $10k to passenger within an hour, Singapore News

After receiving a call from a distressed passenger while on duty at Tampines Interchange, SBS Transit assistant interchange supervisor Choong Seong Kuong immediately alerted the operations control centre of a passenger's loss of $10,000 on board a bus.
A SBS Transit team then tracked down Bus Service 39 and got in touch with the driver, bus captain Dong Depeng, the transport company said in a Facebook post on Sunday (June 1).
Dong later found the bag safe and untouched, according to the Facebook post.
Once Dong reached the interchange, he passed the cash-filled bag to Choong before it was returned to the passenger.
The man not only got his belongings back within an hour, but also received peace of mind that his valuables were back in his hands, the post added.
The passenger said: "The staff fulfilled their duties with great responsibility and I'm extremely grateful."
Both Choong and Dong were commended by SBS Transit for their "quick thinking, professionalism, and integrity".
"We didn't think twice — it's our duty to look out for our passengers. We're just doing what's right," Choong said.
Many netizens praised the SBS Transit staff for their honesty.
One comment said: "The bus captain's honesty deserve the highest respect."
Another added: "Well done Choong and Dong. Both of you have made SBS Transit proud."
AsiaOne has reached out to SBS Transit for more information.
A similar incident was shared by SBS Transit in February, where $14,000 was returned to a passenger who had left their backpack containing cash in SBS bus service 58.
Like Choong, this bus captain also immediately contacted the operations control centre. The passenger added she intended to open a bank account with the cash.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said on June 3 that when its team arrived at the scene, the man was found unresponsive on the tracks under an LRT train and presumed him to be dead. Shuttle bus services and alternative train services were activated by rail operator Rapid KL for affected commuters during the evening peak hours. In a Facebook update close to 9pm, Rapid KL said rescue work was over and all alternative services were discontinued. In February, a visually impaired man was killed after accidentally falling onto the tracks at Kuala Lumpur's Titiwangsa LRT station and getting run over by a train. In 2018, a man died at the same Puchong station where the latest incident happened when he descended onto the tracks and got hit by an oncoming train. The National Parks Board (NParks) is investigating after a cat was discovered dead in Yishun with its legs stretched out in an unusual, splayed manner. NParks told CNA on Monday, June 2, that it "received feedback on a cat found dead at the foot of a staircase at Yishun Street 51 and is looking into the matter." "We urge the public not to speculate on the details of the case and allow investigations to run its proper course," the board told the portal. The incident was initially reported on Sunday, June 1, by the Facebook group Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats, which included photographs of a dead cat discovered on what looks to be a Housing and Development Board (HDB) stairway landing. According to the poster, the cat was discovered near Block 510A in Yishun. A screenshot of a text message showed that a 24-hour hotline was called, but no help was given. According to CNA report, the 24-hour hotline was for a private veterinarian clinic. According to the post, this incident took place near the block where another cat was discovered dead in Yishun with serious injuries. This is the latest in a string of events in which cats in Yishun and Punggol were discovered dead and injured. In a Facebook post last month, Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam shared about another similar incident that took place in Yishun Street 51and said, "A community cat in Yishun had been tortured, eyes gouged out, body cut up and organs split." "What kind of person will do this? This is not who we are as a people," he added. Facebook page Sayang Our Singapore's Community Cats said that the cat was found "brutally tortured and left on the road in a failed attempt to disguise this crime as an accident". In a second occurrence, another cat was discovered hurt at the loading and unloading port at Block 326B, Sumang Walk, Punggol. According to NParks, the animal's injuries were most likely caused by a car accident rather than a purposeful act of cruelty. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the number of animal cruelty and welfare cases in Singapore would reach a 12-year high of 961 in 2024.

ICA began investigating the 53-year-old after the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released its report on March 11 this year PUBLISHED ON June 03, 2025 7:45 AM By Sean Ler The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has issued a verbal advisory to the 53-year-old Singaporean man who was registered as the sole voter in one of the polling districts within Tampines Changkat Single Member Constituency (SMC). The man, who only wanted to be known by his surname Yeo when he spoke to AsiaOne in April this year, had previously listed his business premises located in Tampines Industrial Park A as his residential address. Yeo has since updated his address. In a joint statement to the media on Tuesday (June 3), ICA and the Elections Department (ELD) said the man registered his address at an industrial park in 2020 as he had lived there temporarily during that period. The agencies added that the man moved to a new residence in 2022, but did not update his address within 28 days, as required by law. "The decision to issue a verbal advisory took into account that this was his first offence under the National Registration Act, and there was no evidence to suggest any malicious or criminal intent," added ICA and ELD. According to the agencies, Yeo has since updated his address with ICA and the Registers of Electors will reflect his updated address when they are next revised. When the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) released its report on March 11, there was one anomaly: one polling district -- EC 42 -- in Tampines Changkat SMC had only a single registered voter, who turned out to be Yeo. Several media outlets attempted unsuccessfully to locate the single voter at the new Tampines GreenEmerald BTO project. Contractors and security guards whom AsiaOne spoke to said that new homeowners had only received their keys and commenced renovations in February. And since the Registry of Electors was updated as at Feb 1, 2025, there would not have been reasonably sufficient time for any new homeowner to complete even minimal renovations, move in, and have their registered address changed to the newly completed BTO. AsiaOne managed to track down Yeo at the JTC-managed Tampines Industrial Park A in early-April and later spoke to him. Yeo said that he had changed his residential address located in central Singapore to this industrial unit in Tampines sometime in 2020. He told AsiaOne that as the sole proprietor of the family business, he often spends long hours at work every day. "It was for the convenience to run this business," explained Yeo at that time, adding that he does not live in the unit. AsiaOne later learnt that ICA had already commenced investigations after the EBRC's report. When contacted on Tuesday afternoon after the joint statement, Yeo declined further comment. Under the National Registration Act, all identity card holders are required to report a change of address within 28 days of moving in a new (local or overseas) residence. The change can be done online via ICA's change of address e-service. Those who fail to report a change of address or falsely declare their residential address may be fined up to $5,000 and jailed for up to five years.
