Mysterious ‘red lightning' spotted over Himalayas is finally explained

A strange 'red lightning ' phenomenon photographed from near a lake site in the southern Tibetan plateau in 2022 was driven by thunderstorms over the Himalayan region, scientists discover in a new study.
Thunderstorms can generate different types of transient luminous events like gigantic jets and blue jets via the transfer of charges involved in lightning formation from inside clouds to the ground.
On the night of 19 May 2022, two astrophotographers located near Pumoyongcuo Lake in Tibet captured the spectacular display of " red sprites ' – an atmospheric phenomenon named after their jellyfish-like appearance.
These were electrical discharges that produced vivid red flashes high above thunderstorms.
In this particular event in 2022, researchers also spotted 16 rare secondary jets and the first-ever recorded case in Asia of green airglow at the base of the ionosphere – a layer of the atmosphere containing a high concentration of ions about 80 to 1,000km (50 to 620miles) above the earth's surface.
'Nearly half of these events involved dancing sprites, with an additional 16 uncommon secondary jets and at least four extremely rare green emissions called 'ghosts' observed following the associated sprites,' scientists wrote in a new study.
The findings, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, revealed the driving force behind this grand red sprites display.
"This event was truly remarkable," says study co-author Gaopeng Lu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In the latest research, scientists assessed photographs of the event to probe the parent lightning discharges.
Due to the lack of precise timestamps to analyse photos and videos of the event, researchers developed an innovative method to synchronise video time using satellite trajectories and star field analysis.
Using this approach, they could determine the exact occurrence times of the sprites, and link them to their parent lightning discharges.
Based on the analysis, scientists found that the sprites were triggered by a 'high-peak current' positive cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a massive convective system spanning a cloud area of over 200,000sqkm.
The parent lightning discharges which drove the red sprites arose from a convective complex stretching from the Ganges Plain to the southern foothills of the Tibetan Plateau, researchers noted.
'This suggests that thunderstorms in the Himalayan region have the potential to produce some of the most complex and intense upper-atmospheric electrical discharges on Earth,' Dr Lu said.
The findings, according to researchers, hint that storms in the region may generate even more complex discharge structures like the red sprites.

A 'city killer' asteroid once thought to be on a potential collision course with the Earth has now been found to have a higher chance of striking the Moon. The building-sized space rock, designated 2024 YR4, sparked global concern when it was discovered late last year as initial projections suggested it had a 3 per cent chance of hitting the Earth on 22 December 2032. Subsequent observations reduced the threat of Earth impact to virtually zero but revealed that the rock had a small chance of crashing onto the Moon. After analysing additional data from Nasa 's James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have refined their predictions of the asteroid's orbit. The new data has improved our understanding of where the asteroid will be on 22 December 2032 'by nearly 20 per cent', Nasa said in a statement. Researchers said the 200ft asteroid's latest probability of impacting the Moon had increased to 4.3 per cent from the previous estimate of about 3.8 per cent. There is still an over 95 per cent chance it will miss the Moon, according to the recent estimates. Nasa has concluded that the object poses no significant impact risk to Earth in 2032 and beyond. In the event the space rock strikes the Moon, it would be one of the largest asteroids in recent history to hit the lunar surface. Researchers hope it may provide crucial data to prepare for future planetary defence operations. 'The possibility of getting a chance for an observation of a sizable Moon impact is indeed an interesting scenario from a scientific point of view," said Richard Moissl, head of the European Space Agency 's planetary defence office. Scientists hope tracking and understanding the asteroid could offer further insights into similar space rocks that might pose a threat to the Earth. A recent analysis of the asteroid suggests it may once have been a boulder that sat on the surface of a larger rubble-pile asteroid. Looking at how the rock absorbed sunlight and emitted heat, astronomers found that it was rich in silicates. This indicated it likely originated in the solar system's main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and was pushed into its current near-Earth orbit by gravitational interactions with Jupiter. Currently, the asteroid has passed too far away in its orbit to be observed with either space or ground-based telescopes. Nasa hopes to make further observations when the asteroid's orbit around the Sun brings it back into the vicinity of the Earth. 'After 2025 May, 2024 YR4 will next enter JWST observing window in the first part of 2026 as a challenging target, which may be worth pursuing to determine whether a lunar impact will occur,' researchers said in a recent study, published in the journal RNAAS.

And this year the Strawberry Moon will live up to its name and could take on a red tinge. ‌ That's because the Moon will be the lowest we will see until 2043 - staying close to the horizon after it rises as a full Moon on June 10 and 11. The fact it is lower on the horizon will mean that, to people looking from the UK, it will take on a red tinge. ‌ When the Moon hangs low on the horizon, its light has to travel through a much thicker slice of Earth's atmosphere than when it's overhead. That extra distance does two things: Rayleigh scattering: Molecules of nitrogen, oxygen, plus tiny aerosols in the air scatter short-wavelength light (violet, blue, green) far more efficiently than long-wavelength light (orange, red).
