Saudi Arabia's World Cup hopes hinge on a near-impossible task against Australia

Hindustan Times4 hours ago

A Saudi squad that has scored six goals through nine qualifying games needs to beat Australia by a five-goal margin to earn a direct spot at the 2026 World Cup.
Head coach Herve Renard knows it's an extremely unlikely outcome for his Saudi team, but he's urging his players to go all in Tuesday in the last game of the third round of Asian qualifying for next year's global tournament.
'The door is closed but we have to try to qualify even if it is through the window,' Renard said after his team's 2-0 win over Bahrain last week kept Saudi Arabia in contention. 'Everything must go very well for us if we are to qualify; we have to score goals.'
Anything less than a five-goal deficit means Australia — in second spot in Group C — qualifies for a seventh World Cup. The last time the Socceroos lost by such a margin was in successive 6-0 defeats against Brazil and France in 2013. The Australians have scored 14 goals and conceded six through nine qualifiers.
After successive World Cup qualifications through the playoffs, Australia is close to securing a direct route but coach Tony Popovic is taking nothing for granted.
'We need to do a job in Saudi,' Popovic said. 'We're in a great position, but we need to finish it off.'
Popovic has only been in the job since September, stepping in after Graham Arnold resigned after collecting just one point in the group's first two qualification games.
'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do,' he said. 'And we're very close now to achieving our goal.'
Asia has been allocated eight places at the 48-team World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The top two teams in each of the three groups in this round advance directly. The third- and fourth-place teams in each group go into another round vying for two more places.
Japan was the first to qualify and will top Group C regardless of the outcome between Australia and third-place Saudi Arabia. Iran and Uzbekistan have qualified from Group A, and South Korea and Jordan have qualified from Group B.
If Saudi Arabia fails to win by five, it will join United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia and Iraq in the next stage of qualifying in October. Oman, meanwhile, is fourth in Group B, a point ahead of the Palestinian team in fifth place, with the two teams meeting in Amman on Tuesday.
'We still have everything to play for and we know what we have to do and that is to take all three points and continue our journey,' Palestinian coach Ihab Abujazar said.
For China, Kuwait, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain, the run to 2026 is already over.

While Royal Challengers Bangalore, led by Rajat Patidar, became the IPL champion for the first time, the wait for the first title win of Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, continued. Former captain Virat Kohli played an important role in the victory of Royal Challengers Bangalore, who scored 657 runs in 15 matches at an average of 54.75. After the end of IPL 2025, the eyes of Indian fans will be on Team India's tour of England. On the England tour, India has to play a five-match Test series against the host team from June 20. Virat Kohli is not going to be a part of this Test series as he decided to retire from Test cricket last month (May 12). Kohli had already retired from T20 International, so he will now be seen representing the Indian team only in ODI International. That is, Virat Kohli can now be seen on the field in the month of August. Let us tell you that the Indian team's England tour is to end on August 4. Then the Indian team has to go on a tour of Bangladesh, where it has to play three ODIs and three T20 matches. There is every possibility that Virat Kohli will play in the ODI series against Bangladesh. Apart from Kohli, Rohit Sharma will also be a part of that ODI series and will also captain the team. The first match of the ODI series between India and Bangladesh will be held on August 17. That is, Kohli will be seen in action through that match. Then the remaining two ODIs will be held on August 20 and August 23. After this, T20 International matches will be played on August 26, August 29 and August 31. The 2027 ODI World Cup is to be held in the months of October-November under the joint hosting of South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. That is, there is still more than two years left for that World Cup. The Indian team is going to get at least 27 ODI matches to prepare for the World Cup 2027. Bold claim! These 3 uncapped stars will 'definitely' make India's T20 World Cup squad

Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar NEW DELHI: Former top-order batter Robin Uthappa believes that three uncapped, explosive youngsters — Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi — will "definitely" be in contention for a place in India's squad for their T20 World Cup title defence at home next year. The recently concluded 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) saw franchises unearth several promising talents. While some emerged as prospects for the future, a few made a strong case for immediate inclusion in the national T20I setup. Punjab Kings' dynamic opening pair, Priyansh and Prabhsimran, turned heads with their fearless and aggressive batting throughout the tournament. Joining them in the spotlight was 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who opened for Rajasthan Royals and made headlines with his blistering knocks that combined power with maturity. The rise of these young talents has created a healthy selection dilemma for India as they look to finalise their top order for the marquee tournament next year. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, both of whom have been out of the T20I setup for over a year, are still in the mix. In their absence, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have formed a new and successful opening partnership. According to Uthappa, India should use the remaining T20 internationals ahead of the tournament to fine-tune their squad and ensure full fitness among key players. It's about using the remaining T20s before the tournament to figure out the best 15-man squad. You already have Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all Test players who can also thrive in T20s," Uthappa said. Bombay Sport Exchange Ep. 6: Harish Thawani on cricket's TV market and the watershed moments "Then there's Sanju Samson. So it's going to be a challenge figuring out who makes the cut. Fitness will play a key role -- you want a fully fit squad going into a World Cup, and I'm sure that's something the selectors and management will be closely monitoring," he added. Prabhsimran had an impressive campaign, scoring 549 runs in 17 matches at an average of 32.29 and a strike rate of over 160. He notched up four half-centuries, with a best of 91, and finished as the eighth-highest run-scorer of the season. His opening partner Priyansh, known for his exploits in the Delhi Premier League, tallied 475 runs from 17 innings at an average of 27.94. He maintained a remarkable strike rate of 179.24 and registered a century along with two fifties. Suryavanshi, who featured in the latter stages of the tournament, impressed with 252 runs in seven matches at an average of 36.00 and an explosive strike rate of over 206.

BCCI expected Rohit Sharma to retire from ODIs after Champions Trophy; Ajit Agarkar to act as captaincy saga intensifies

Indian cricket is going through an interesting time. The legends are on their way out, and the next generation is taking over. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the two stalwarts and torch-bearers of Indian cricket, who held the batting over the last decade and a half, announced their retirements from T20Is last year and now have decided to walk away from Tests. Only ODIs remain – the format whose future has been widely debated. With still a good chunk of ODIs left between now and the 2027 World Cup, there is a chance that both Kohli and Rohit are eyeing to finish off their storied careers with the only ICC limited-overs trophy they haven't won together. Here is the catch, though. The World Cup is still more than two years away, and by then, Rohit would be 40 while Kohli would be touching that figure. While there is no doubt that both would be eager to carry on, the team management may view at mission World Cup differently. For Kohli, the scheme of things looks a lot better as he is a lot fitter in comparison and has his batting approach sorted. With Rohit, it's been a bit of a hit and miss lately. Two years ago, Rohit adopted this carefree batting approach during the 2023 World Cup, which, to a large extent, is continuing to work for him. However, with age catching up, how much longer this approach will bring him success will be a crucial factor. Besides, with reports doing the rounds that Rohit will no longer be captain during the ICC tournament in South Africa, the job becomes that much tougher for Rohit. Usually, how Indian cricket works is that it grooms a successor. For example, MS Dhoni knew that it would be tough for him to work past the 2019 World Cup, and hence Virat Kohli was appointed India's ODI captain in 2017. Similarly, with the 2027 World Cup likely being Rohit's swansong, the chances of him captaining are grim. For the first time, Indian cricket is working on the theory of split captaincy. While Rohit is captaining India in the ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav is in command of the ODI team, and the newly appointed captain, Shubman Gill, will begin his journey in another 11 days' time. But it may not be the case for too long. A chance in guard is loading, and it could be coming shortly. "Quite frankly, a lot of us thought Rohit wanted to move away from the ODI format after winning the Champions Trophy. There have been no discussions between Rohit and the selectors over his ODI future," a BCCI source told The Hindustan Times. As part of the evolving cycle, the BCCI chairman of selectors is expected to spring into action to shape Rohit's successor. Despite his questionable tactics as Test captain, Rohit has been tremendous when it comes to leading India in white-ball formats. In the last three ICC events, India have lost just one match under Rohit – the World Cup final to Australia. In the last two years, Rohit has led India to two ICC championships – the T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies and the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. If the Bangladesh tour goes as planned, then India will play their next ODI series in August; otherwise, in October, when they travel to Australia to play a three-match series. August 2025: 3 matches in Bangladesh October 2025: 3 matches in Australia November 2025: 3 matches against South Africa at home January 2026: 3 matches against New Zealand at home June 2026: 3 matches against Afghanistan at home July 2026: 3 matches in England September 2026: 3 matches against West Indies at home November 2026: 3 matches in New Zealand December 2026: 3 matches against Sri Lanka at home. Between now and the World Cup, India play at least 27 ODIs – updated as per the current FTP – but more matches can be added, and changes can be made. With so many matches being spread across two years, and with the possibility that Shreyas Iyer has joined India's race for captaincy, and Gill already in contention, Rohit's run as captain could be coming to an end.
