For as long as I can remember, the phrase 'customer first' has been everywhere: in companies' mission and vision statements, customer service departments and marketing campaigns. And sure, it makes sense, it sounds noble and profitable. After all, what business can survive without happy and loyal customers?
But there is a hidden side of that famous phrase, one that often gets overlooked: what happens when companies put their customers first without considering their employees?
Providing great customer experience at the expense of your team might work for a while, but it's not a long-term sustainable strategy.

On the surface, 'customer first' seems like the obvious rule. Many companies invest millions in customer surveys, market research, branding, marketing campaigns, loyalty programs and customer journey mapping, convinced that a profitable business depends on having happy and loyal customers who come back and recommend the brand to family and friends.
And they're right, but that's not the only factor they should consider.

Overburdened teams under constant pressure to satisfy customer demands, while 'optimising costs'
Short-term wins (discounts, rushed solutions) without addressing the real root causes of customer dissatisfaction
Without a strong, supported, and engaged employee base, the customer experience promise becomes fragile.

Richard Branson has a famous quote: 'Customers do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your customers.' And this isn't just a nice saying, it's backed by research.
Gallup's studies show that employee engagement drives higher customer service ratings, higher productivity, lower turnover, and higher profits.
There's also a recent study shared by Medallia showing that 69% of customers say they feel more loyal to brands when they can tell their employees are treated well.

Your brand lives or dies through the people who interact with customers. A nice smile, genuine attention, or a warm gesture from a salesperson, customer service rep, or support agent can completely elevate the customer's experience.

It's proven that companies with strong employee experiences also deliver better customer experiences. Why? Because:

It could be through surveys, focus groups, and workshops, not just from an HR angle, but to understand the barriers they face in delivering good experiences to the customers and what actions the company can take to help.
Invest in talent development
Customer needs evolve and so should the skills of the people work with them. Providing continuous learning opportunities, coaching and development opportunities helps employees feel empowered and confident.
Recognise and reward your employees
Recognition doesn't always have to be financial. Having a recognition program boosts engagement and motivation.
Build a people-centric culture
If employees feel the company takes care of them, they'll take care of the customers too. Culture is built (and spread) day by day.
In summary, 'Customer first' is a great slogan, but it becomes dangerous when companies interpret it as prioritising customers over employees.
Investing in employee experience (EX) isn't just an HR strategy, it's a business strategy that drives long-term customer loyalty and profitability. If you can turn your employees into your #1 fans, you'll be ahead on the road to great customer experience.
Let's talk about why an 'Employee First' strategy drives companies to unlock the innovation. The more comfortable and happier employees are, the more creative and productive they can be. They'll consistently share ideas and proposals that help achieve brand differentiation.

They feel a strong sense of belonging because the company supports them, providing creative spaces, personal benefits, and opportunities to develop their skills and create high-impact products.

The Cabinda Refinery plans to start phase one operations in 2025, with a capacity of 30,000 barrels per day (bpd). Developed by investment company Gemcorp, the refinery will be the country's second operational refining facility once completed. As the facility prepares to start production, Cabinda Refinery has joined the Angola Oil&Gas (AOG) conference – taking place September 3-4 in Luanda – as a Bronze Sponsor. AOG 2025 represents the premier platform for the country's oil and gas industry and Cabinda Refinery's sponsorship reflects its broader commitment to enhancing Angolan crude processing and distribution. The Cabinda Refinery seeks to reduce Angolan fuel imports by increasing domestic refining capacity, with a goal to achieve 445,000 bpd in the coming years. With the start of operations at the Cabinda Refinery, the country will achieve 22% of this goal by the end of 2025. Cabinda Refinery's sponsorship at AOG 2025 will support discussions around Angola's downstream project pipeline. AOG is the largest oil and gas event in Angola. Taking place with the full support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; national oil company Sonangol; and the African Energy Chamber; the event is a platform to sign deals and advance Angola's oil and gas industry. This first phase will supply approximately 10% of the country's domestic fuel demand, with a planned second phase set to double capacity to 60,000 bpd. Engineering works for the second phase will commence once the first phase is operational. The first phase of the refinery was backed by funding provided by multilateral finance institutions Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), with financial close reached in 2023. Additional financing was provided by the Fund for Export Development in Africa – the impact investment subsidiary of the Afreximbank. Of the total $473 million investment, $138 million represented equity from project sponsors while the remaining $335 million was mobilized through the AFC-led facility. As the largest event of its kind in the country, AOG 2025 will connect global investors and project developers with Angolan opportunities. Cabinda Refinery's sponsorship will not only open doors to discussions on financing downstream projects, but unlock new opportunities for financing by international institutions. It was one of these that crashed near Ahmedabad Airport, India, on Thursday, killing 290 people at the time of reporting. Carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, the London-bound Air India flight turned fatal on the afternoon of June 12, soon after taking off from the Indian city of Ahmedabad. The aviation disaster is being billed as the world's worst in a decade. Importantly, according to aviation analytics source Cirium, the Tata-backed carrier has already placed an order for 20 additional Boeing 787 and a letter of intent for options of an additional 24 aircraft. The Indian airline's website switched to colours of black and white after the disaster. Data from Cirium revealed that the aircraft's first flight was December 14, 2013 and it was delivered to Air India on January 28, 2014. Manufactured in Seattle, USA, the aircraft which crashed on Thursday was 11.5 years old. There are 1,148 Boeing 787 variants in service globally, with an average age of 7.5 years old. The Air India flight that crashed had 18 business class seats and 238 economy class seats. It had more than 41,000 hours of flying time, and almost 8,000 takeoffs and landings, including some 700 cycles in the past 12 months. In total, Air India has 190 aircraft, with an average age of 8.4 years old. In less than 14 years, according to Boeing, the 787 Dreamliner fleet has carried more than one billion passengers, more than any other widebody jet in aviation history. A lighter and more robust composite structure enables airlines to reduce fuel use by up to 25 per cent compared to the airplanes it replaces. The 787 operates to more than 425 new nonstop routes around the world, many of which were never served previously. In the Middle East, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner is operated by EgyptAir, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, EL AL, Iraqi Airways, Royals Jordanian, Etihad Airways, Oman Air and Saudia.
