Following change in schedule, Mullanpur stadium in Mohali gets two IPL play-offs
In a first, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA New International Stadium at Mullanpur will play host to the first two play-off matches for this year's IPL with Qualifier 1 to be played on May 29 followed by the Eliminator on May 30. Ahmedabad will host the Qualifier 2 on June 1 and the final on June 3.
The 38,000-capacity stadium will be hosting the knock-out matches of IPL in its second year of hosting matches of this tournament. Earlier as per the original schedule, Hyderabad was to play host for these two matches with Kolkata hosting the second qualifier and final, but the hostilities between India and Pakistan saw IPL being suspended for a week before resumption on May 17. As the BCCI announced the revised schedule for the play-off matches and final on Tuesday evening, PCA secretary Dilsher Khana was coordinating with his team regarding the association's responsibility.
'It's a huge honour for Punjab Cricket Association that Mullanpur Stadium will play host to the first two play-offs including the Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator. It shows that the BCCI management has recognised our hard work and have entrusted us with the important task of hosting the play-offs matches,' said Khanna while speaking with The Indian Express.
The Mullanpur stadium, which has been hosting domestic matches, was first envisioned by former PCA and BCCI president I S Bindra in 2010. While the IS Bindra PCA International in Mohali was constructed in 1993 and hosted 14 Tests, 26 ODIs and seven T20Is including the semi-final of the 1996 World Cup, 2011 World Cup, and former Indian captain Virat Kohli's 100th Test match in 2022, apart from hosting IPL matches from 2008 till 2023. The new stadium at Mullanpur started hosting IPL matches from 2024.
The 40-acre stadium sees new facilities like herringbone drainage system, a sand field, international-grade dressing rooms, steam, sauna, and ice bath facilities, and a world-class gym apart from 49 corporate boxes. The stadium hosted its first IPL match on March 23 in 2024 with Punjab Kings facing Delhi Capitals.
In total, the Mullanpur stadium has hosted nine IPL matches including four IPL matches this season. Gujarat Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings have already qualified for the play-offs with the fourth spot yet to be finalised along with the points table order of the qualifying four teams.
If Punjab Kings finish in the top two, the team will play in the Qualifier 1 including the top two teams on May 29 at Mullanpur and if the team finishes at the third or fourth spot, then the team will play in the Eliminator between the third and fourth placed team on May 30.
'PCA has always hosted important matches in tournaments like 1996 World Cup, 2011 World Cup and 2016 T20 World Cup and we are glad that IPL play-offs are now added to the list. As always, teams and fans will enjoy their time at Mullanpur stadium. We will start coordinating with the BCCI and the necessary meetings starting tomorrow,' added Khanna.

Khaleel Ahmed's fiery spell dismantles England Lions, puts India A on top in second unofficial Test
Khaleel Ahmed. New Delhi: Khaleel Ahmed's impressive four-wicket haul has given India A a significant advantage over the England Lions in the second unofficial Test at Northampton. Chennai Super Kings' bowlers dominated the day's play, starting with Khaleel Ahmed's impressive four-wicket haul, including the key dismissals of Jordan Cox, James Rew, and George Hill. Tushar Deshpande contributed two wickets, and Tanush Kotian, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Anshul Kamboj each claimed a wicket, helping restrict the opposition to 192/3. It was KL Rahul's century and a fine fifty by Dhruv Jurel that helped India A score 348. Although Rahul sat out the first warm-up match, he soon handled the conditions well in England, while Jurel kept scoring with another half-century. The Indian squad had a practice session at Lord's Cricket Ground. With head coach Gautam Gambhir and the new strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux, the team was able to use the indoor areas. Although Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah worked out by playing football and throwing to batsmen in bowling drills, the others concentrated on serious cricket exercises. That session was the team's first time practicing in London since their arrival.

'Didn't care if South Africa won or lost': Heinrich Klaasen breaks silence on shock international retirement
South Africa wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen shocked the world last week when he announced his sudden retirement from international cricket. Klaasen, 33, played 4 Tests, 60 ODIs and 58 T20Is for the Proteas, scoring more than 3,000 runs across all three formats of the game. Klaasen has finally broken his silence regarding his decision to call it quits, saying for a long time, he didn't care if 'South Africa won or lost'. Klaasen also stated that he had the intention of continuing until the 2027 ODI World Cup, but the exit of head coach Rob Walter as the white-ball coach and his omission from the central contracts list forced him to bid adieu to international cricket. 'I felt for a long time that I didn't really care about any of my performances and whether the team won or not. That's the wrong place to be. I had a long conversation with Rob before the Champions Trophy, and I told him I didn't feel good in my heart about what was going on. I wasn't enjoying it that much,' Klaasen told Rapport. 'We talked nicely, we planned everything nicely up to and including the World Cup in 2027. So when he finished as a coach, and the negotiations with CSA over contracts didn't go as planned, it made my decision a lot easier,' added Klaasen. It must be mentioned that Klaasen had called time on his Test career in 2024 and right after the IPL this year, the wicketkeeper-batter called it quits in both the white-ball formats for South Africa. Klaasen amassed 2141 runs in the 60 ODIs he played in. The right-hander was known for his brute power, as he had a knack for taking down spinners in the middle overs. His best was displayed during an ODI against Australia where he played a knock of 174 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Klaasen announced his retirement via a lengthy Instagram statement: "It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what's best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision, but also one that I have absolute peace with." "To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so," he added. Klaasen was last seen in action for the SunRisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, where he scored 487 runs in 13 innings at an average of 44.27 and a strike rate of 172.69.
